Morning all. Marking thread and playing catch-up - I appear to have lost a day!

While the thought is in my head - Clairey, there is a technique from Traditional Chinese Medicine called moxibustion, where they get strange herbal cigar things, light them, and then you hold them between your toes, and it's supposed to be able to turn a breach baby. It's another acupuncture thing I think. Have to say I've got my sceptical hat on, but depending on how much you want to avoid C-section it could be worth looking into it. DOn't know if there are any contraindiactions or anything though.

Oh and leftover chicken - I always make a risotto with some nice stock made from carcass and the tasty dark meat.

Back to catch-up....

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 08:43

Auld, believe me, we do far too much blardy timetabling and room bookings. We have three major meetings a year and a lot of email angst and general flapping. And that's before the central university administrators step in to mess it all up again with their own system.

LuLuBai · 20/03/2009 08:47

Boff - don't know when you timetable in all your timetabling but in my SIL's case it would appear not to be July as she has a brood of April boys as evidence of what she gets up to in July !

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 08:48

I have to say Auld your uni looks so shit I would not consider working there for a minute. You must be very devoted to your students.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 08:50

We have termly meetings and there is great flapping about in June/July. I avoid the subsequential flapping and hanging about in August about resits as I reckon that's a step too far and not on my contract.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 08:52

I will have two April boys, now you mention it ...

LuLuBai · 20/03/2009 08:52

Auld your market looks like utter bliss. I'm going to drive over to Trowbridge later to The Shires Shopping Centre - and this is a flattering picture of it. Very grim (but there is a useful hardware shop I need to get a few things from).

LuLuBai · 20/03/2009 08:55

Well there you go Boffin. It can't be that bad. My SIL says July and end of term is when she finally relaxes enough to conceive (then she asked what my excuse was for producing April babies - reminded her of July wedding anniversary)

brettgirl2 · 20/03/2009 09:01

In terms of the canesten just tell them that your DH has athlete's foot. They only won't sell it to you if they think it's for you. (just be careful they don't give you the cortisone one - although I accidentally used this a couple of times early on!)

Clairey, good luck with the turning, I have no real advice on this.

Springy - I hope you are feeling better this morning. If not, don't read the below but if you are feeling better - in terms of your friend I am just a bit troubled by her telling you this, in your current 'about to pop' condition.

I realise that you have been best friends with her for nine years, BUT you are not the only person who she could have discussed this with. I may be way off the mark, but I have a nasty feeling that the reason she has chosen to tell you is that she actually wants you to try and talk her out of it. I think that definitely you can encourage her to take time because an abortion whether at 11 weeks or 13 weeks will be a pretty horrendous expeience either way.

I can't believe how many posts there have been since yesterday - and there was no-one on here at all in the morning!

Juwesm · 20/03/2009 09:05

Okay, have just seen that Boff added to the end of Episode 20, 2 days after it finished! That is some serious obsession dedication to duty! There must still be another thread-finishing secret.

PuzzleRocks · 20/03/2009 09:11

Does anyone know if there is anything I can safely take to alleviate my bloody hayfever, I have been clawing my eyes out this morning and my poor nose! What with the pregnancy nosebleeds and stuffiness I already have I am terrified all the blowing will leave me with a Westbrook.

AuldAlliance · 20/03/2009 09:22

Boff, I don't think it's because I'm devoted to my students. I need to earn a living, and this is, foolishly, the career path I chose 10 years ago. Given our working conditions, you can see why lecturers are a bit p'd off at Sarko claiming that we are privileged dossers clinging to a cushy status!

What gets to me about the timetabling is that no admin staff are involved and no communication takes place between depts, so we spend weeks doing timetables and are then informed at the start of the semester that there are no rooms at specific times, or that the Spanish dept has blocked a specific day and time for courses which our students are to attend.

BabyBolat · 20/03/2009 09:24

Morning all

Springy how you feeling this morning precious??

Now I am not trying to take you out of the baby race but if George isn't on his way after last night - I think Nutty might be right with the cork!! Am really worried you are going to hurt yourself and spend the next few weeks being miserable and in pain (and possibly stressing out 'iccle George) - May be completely wrong and you could be pushing the little lovely one out now in which case yay!!

Does Lauren have a buddy and if so do we know if she has popped yet?

Anyway hope you are feeling OK and you are either giving birth or contracting less!!

Puzzle no idea sorry!!

Quick question - can I cycle? My MW was supposed to be coming round today but can't make it - it's too far to walk but I could cycle in 5 or 10 minutes.

Juwesm · 20/03/2009 09:25

Puzzle - You could probably try some cromoglicate eye drops and possibly a steroid nasal spray, but I wouldn't do either without speaking to GP (for free prescription, obviously!). Piriton is also used quite often in pregnancy e.g. for itching in cholestasis, but again only under specialist supervision.

AuldAlliance · 20/03/2009 09:26

No, BB don't cycle.
I know it's a minimal risk, but if you fall off the consequences are potentially devastating.
And I don't know how your pelvis would take it!

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 09:26

Glad you appreciate my efforts, Swali
I have further hacks that none of you know about, that allow me to do this.

Puzzle, a sneaky Piriton won't be a disaster this late in the pg, I reckon. I sometimes have a very occasional one for the purposes of sanity. And pop a bit of vaseline on your moustache area and the entrance to your nose if you're not going out.

brettgirl2 · 20/03/2009 09:26

BB - Can't you get a taxi? I'm not sure that taking up cycling at nearly 9 months pg is a particularly good idea.

Juwesm · 20/03/2009 09:27

Plus probably loads of homeopathic stuff, but don't know about that I'm afraid!

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 09:28

BB, in contradiction to Auld, if it's an easy bike ride and you're used to cycling, I would do it, but from personal experience you may find it induces labour ... especially if you whizz through the pot holes at speed!!!

bronze · 20/03/2009 09:33

Sorry for just posting (about me) and running all the time. As you can imagine its a bit mad here at the moment.

What was Boffs advice about chickenpox again. Turns out ds and dds playgroup leader (who I have spent time with as I tend to help out and do things there) has shingles. We've all had chickenpox but I'm not quite sure of the risk. I've never had shingles.

bronze · 20/03/2009 09:34

Lulu I never iron especially at the moment when things seem to be coming straight out of the dryer back into use. I think dh is beginning to realise hes an arse as hes trying to be a bit more helpful today.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2009 09:38

If you have all had chickenpox, I think it's not a problem unless you give birth in the next few days, and you have been in contact with a full blown case which you inadvertently pass on to the baby somehow (I am not sure shingles would do this).

My advice would be to alert your GP to this situation so they can give you the best up to date advice, but I reckon they will tell you it's all OK and not to worry.

bronze · 20/03/2009 09:41

Thanks Boff
I'll try and speak to the gp if Ican get round the harridans receptionists at the surgery

Morning all

Quick one as DD has been watching a Maisy DVD for over half an hour and I am feeling guilty for letting her. Normally we stop after 20 mins.

Clairey I know this sounds crazy but my NCT teacher always said you can get an acupuncturist to burn something at your little toe and it really works in turning breech babies. She said she only know women who it had worked for. Sorry can't be more specific as I don't remember the details but I am sure you can google it or ask an acupuncutrist about it.
