I used normal pads after a couple of days with DS. I think I only used the maternity pads because he was my first and everyone said you had to use them.

LOL, Cat how embarassing. I think I would have crawled under the seat and hid!!

I would like to apologise in advance of this outbreak. Feel free to ignore.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to kill him and bury him under a nice new patio!!!!!!!!!

He now thinks it is a bad idea incase something goes wrong.

But having him in the hospital where I am having him is no different to having him at home as they can't do CS or anything there.

But I am just going to give in and go to the hospital. He says he will get all stressed and be no help to me. So what I think doesn't matter really.

kayz, in the nicest possible way - what's more important, you being less stressed at home or DH being less stressed at the hospital? It's you giving birth, not him, and he wouldn't be attending you at the birth - that's the mw's responsibility. I understand though that it's not ideal if you have a birthing partner who is less than supportive of your choices (I say this as someone who probably would have given homebirth some more serious thought had DP jumped at the idea), but at the end of the day you should be the one making the decision on this one. There is no harm in phoning up and finding out about it anyway - if it turns out not to be a possibility anyway then at least you won't need to be angry at DH, and if it is a possibility then when they come round to do the assessment they might be able to allay his fears. Remember that even if you have booked a home birth you don't have to go ahead with it and can always choose to go into hospital instead. Perhaps you could persuade him to agree to look into it at least...

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 20:15

It's probably not going to make a difference but for low risk pregnancies home birth is statistically safer. And if you do suddenly need assistance in a hospital they have to call a doctor who may not necessarily be in the hospital let alone on the ward and if you have to have a emCS it take anything from 20mins to an hour to get the theatre ready, plenty of time for you to get to a hospital. Oh and for a home birth you are attended by 2 midwives with a minimum of 10 years experience where in hospital they may have less experience and have other mums to attend to where at home it is just you so they are more likely to pick up problems quicker.

Beans33 · 27/11/2008 20:17

Thanks PD - wise words. I will take wallow away!

And Veggie - you're right. DH is a complete bit of a control freak and I do think he needs a bit of a job to do. I love him so very much and I hate arguing with him. I think I will sit down with him this weekend and discuss how he can help during the birth etc. Give him a massaging role and discuss positions and things. He's such a lovely man and generally so smashing. These hormones (me) and nerves (both of us) have a lot to answer for relationship-wise, don't they??!

Thanks for all wise words, I do appreciate it enormously. And I promise to be more uppy and fun tomorrow!

Turniphead1 · 27/11/2008 20:20

Kayz how frustrating for you for him to have raised your hopes. I second what PD says. Is he a kind of cold hard facts guy - in which case there are loads of stats to prove how safe homebirths are. Bet Veggie or some of the other homebirthers have them to hand. Best of luck!

Veggie I think we may have the same mat. pads? The Naturacare (or something). I read that on the box and thought WTF would you be doing using that many in 24 hours....No way! You'd be changing it every two hours. As others have said after first couple of days I just use heavy flow old fashioned sanitary pads.

Turniphead1 · 27/11/2008 20:22

see I cross-posted with Veggie - and she had the facts to hand!!

beans your DH sounds marvellous - but feel free to vent here when you feel down. It's what we are here for.

Beans33 · 27/11/2008 20:26

Thanks Turnip!

Kayz - I'm afraid I don't know anything about homebirths, so I can't join in the discussion, but I do think you should stress the fact that you're the one giving birth and if you'd be happier at home, then he really ought to at least entertain it and meet and speak to the midwives etc.

Big love to all. I'm off to bed in about half an hour. [yawn emoticon!]

xx

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 20:28

yeah they are the ones i got, on a 10 pack, do you think they are being a bit cheeky trying to get people to buy more. I can't remember buying them last time i think the midwives at the birth center gave them to me and the funny pants.

Kayz- i can get some stats and also some good articles to read if you want.

traceface · 27/11/2008 20:37

I was given maternity pads in hospital (more like Moses basket mattresses) and they were even changed for me by mws (how dignified!) as I was too poorly, but as soon as it was up to me I was just using normal sanitary pads (hate that phrase).
Can't believe there's someone on here called Icecube - that's really harsh (nothing personal Icecube!)because that's what I'm craving, and seeing the word just makes me want more....mmmmmm crunchy cold!
Made up for my lack of bus fumes yesterday by going to the train station today! I'm seriously starting to question my sanity!

traceface · 27/11/2008 20:41

btw turnip sorry for mixing you up with PD...I blame the baby-brain!
Feel like my period pain thing is coming back...always this time of day...getting used to it now!
My friend came today - old school pal - and she's 15 weeks preg and has the slightest teeny tiny bump! Felt like a whale next to her and gave her my flattering maternity things which now won't get over my ever increasing arse!!!

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 20:42

exhaust fumes make me sick but i do love train smell

Turniphead1 · 27/11/2008 20:48

trace don't worry. Tis very hard to keep up with who is who etc etc. I really struggle. I have spent all day on MN today - but I have also just stamped and addressed all my xmas cards...does that count as nesting?!

I am laughing at the thought of you stalking around various transport depots....sniffing like a madwoman...

traceface · 27/11/2008 20:52

I actually live 5 mins walk from York lorry park and have resisted camping there overnight so far! Very proud of my self-restraint!

traceface · 27/11/2008 20:54

and I think Christmas card writing counts as nesting...have done all mine but not sealed them - am hoping to add in a birth announcement and save on stamps by doing it all at once!

poisondwarf · 27/11/2008 20:57

Turnip have spent all day on MN too. Have not stamped or addressed any envelopes but have managed to have a clearout of mince pies and am about to tackle a particularly stubborn custard doughnut - does this count as nesting?

If anyone sees me on here tomorrow please ignore me - maybe I will go away.

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 21:02

well done PD those mince pies can be particlarly tricky. I have been putting off my choc ices until after dinner.

Kayz i agree with what pd and Veggiemummy said about the homebirth. You really should at least find out about it if it's what you really want. My dh was really against it at first, but when i had Ben, i was really left pretty much to it at the hospital. At least this way there'll be a midwife with me the whole time, and two during the delivery. Hope you get it sorted.

Beans hope you feel tons better tomorrow. I've been teary all through this pregnancy, and i'm overly emotional at the best of times!

I haven't been craving ice cubes, but i had 4 rocket ice lollies yesterday, and so far 3 tonight

hiccymapops · 27/11/2008 21:12

Veggie i bled terribly last time (sorry if tmi) but i only used maternity pads for the first couple of days, then i just used normal pads (for heavy periods) I had to use them for a few months, but if you were fine before, i'm sure you will be again. This time i'm prepared and practicaly have a wardrobe full!

zoejeanne · 27/11/2008 21:17

Hi all, I?ve not managed to get myself to a computer since Monday and how this thread has grown! I?ve been itching to hear about Tuesday?s arrivals ? so thrilled to hear about Harry, Frieda and Octavia, huge congratulations to daisy, verso and ladyt. And again for baby Robbie arriving yesterday, congratulations to amy. And great to hear from pixsix too, that her baby boy is out of special care now.

Trace I?m also suddenly wanting to take a preggie of me, I mentioned it to my Mum this week and she said ?why on earth would you want to do that?? ? mainly so I can look back and think ?phew, I?m smaller than I was then!? (I?ve just peeped at your pictures and I think you?re looking pretty good, and your DD is a cutie too!) And at your colostrum dream, that is hilarious!

kayz my SIL has sent me one of those wedge cushions, I just wish I?d got it months ago. I think you?re supposed to sleep with it under your bump, but I prop it (wide edge up) behind me on the sofa/in the car/anywhere I can and it makes such a difference (but I still wish I could flop on the sofa and be relaxed again). Is the ambulance/30 minute rule for Scarborough? At my antenatal classes the MW was practically suggesting we all get an ambulance and not worry about driving ourselves there, and if they decided we weren?t ready they?d send the ambulance back to Scarborough without us and wouldn?t mind if we called for one a bit later ? thought that sounded a bit unbelievable!

veggie I?ve also hired a tens from that website after seeing someone?s recommendation, and have got a hot water bottle ? can you use them both at the same time, do you know? Just read about your cousin, I?m so sorry for you

Turnip I?m pleased everything is fine with your baby, but a little alarmed that my due date buddy is having mild contractions already! I hope you and babyturnip both stay well and have a safe birth, whenever it is

beans I love that poem, you are a genius!

lal how did the ball bouncing go? I hope babylal got a move on so you can have your homebirth.

DH is starting with man flu and has the fire blasting and it is so hot in the lounge, but he doesn?t believe me, I want to watch telly but can?t handle the heat! Hope I don?t have to be sympathetic all weekend ? I haven?t got the patience for that! But on a brighter note, I finished work on Tuesday and am now officially a lady of leisure (at least until babyZJ arrives), I had a lovely lovely massage yesterday and today I got my hospital bag packed, so baby can come from now on if he wants to (but would prefer it if he waits a while longer yet, until after Xmas in fact). The bad news is my tummy is now so small (as in the stomach that holds food, not the enormous bump) that after my sarnie yesterday I didn?t have room for cake

Sleep well everyone!

katie3677 · 27/11/2008 21:21

This thread moves so damn quickly, I've only been gone for an afternoon and we've moved on 4 pages!
Well, I very nearly ended up having an emergency cs this afternoon. Went for a diabetes checkup and the Dr and nurse were worried that as my blood sugars have dropped significantly over the last few days that the placenta was no longer working. Luckily a doppler scan proved otherwise and there is nothing wrong. But my stress levels went through the roof when they said that I might not be leaving the hospital this afternoon, especially as DH was stuck at work with a major problem, my parents are in London for the night, thedogwas in the car and I had DS with me. 3 hours in a boiling hot maternity unit, and they finally let me go.
Was supposed to go to DS's firstparents evening tonight, but after that decided to come home and relax instead.
Sorry for the 'me' post, will now go and catch up with what everyone else has been up to...

reban · 27/11/2008 21:37

its been 24 hours since i looked last and we've moved on 7 pages!!

sorry not to catch up with everyone but just wanted to say veggie i really am sorry for your loss xx

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 21:40

ZJ- i think you can, i was going to have the hot water bottles on the front and Tens on the back.

speaking of hotwater bottles i went to Boots today to get a couple of hotwater bottles with covers and they were £12 each!!!!!! is that a bit much. I didnt buy them obviously instead i'll go to Wilko's over the weekend to get 2.

Veggiemummy · 27/11/2008 21:44
