GBB well done getting to 36 weeks ! I know of 2 sets of twins and they were both born last week at 32 weeks. All doing well . The first set were born by c-section and the second were a VB with no pain relief atall (not even gas and air !!!!)

Congrats Amy, another wee buba hurray !

Bisou LOL at signs of 'pregnancy' , but seriously, very useful !

Beans love the poem - quality ! Glad I'm not the only one who can't reach !

JB miblet still hiccups at least once a day - they can be really strong, hope they don't hurt the wee poppet

kayz hurray for the ring finally being removed

katie arrggh nightmare about name ! I have been dreading someone 'nicking' our names before I have baby. Do you have an alternative you both really like ? If not I'd still go with it.

pixsix sounds like you had a worrying start but have coped well - good on you, I think I'd crumble.

I am getting occasional cramps (like mild period cramps) but that is all.... so no signs here really. I am also fed up fo people asking if there is any sign - I am 10 days from EDD so not as if I am even late yet !!!

Oh and am a bit fed up that everyone I know in RL due about the same time as me has gone early - statistically I'm so going to be the one who is way late and has to get induced - this does not sit well with my majorly impatient nature !

SummerLightning · 26/11/2008 22:19

Evening all,
hooray for Kayz and her removed ring at last!!
katie I would use the name if I were you. It's not like you're not due soon, so they should guess that you had decided on the name before they announced theirs. After all it could have been the other way round if you had been a bit early. Is it a popular name? I might be slightly more reluctant if it was something very unusual but I would probably just go for it!

We have decided on our name I think!! It is the same name we suggested at the start and my friend laughed her head off at. I don't think my mum likes it either (though she tried to be diplomatic). It's honestly not a weird name, maybe slightly old fashioned, so I don't know what the fuss is about really. So tough to them!! We like it.

Went to the midwife today, baby is not at all engaged, so I don't think he is coming any time soon.

I want fish and chips too. Well not so much now I've eaten dinner but I think I shall have to indulge soon.

Veggiemummy · 26/11/2008 22:33

one of our possible names is the same as a very close friends son who is also a friends of DS's. My friend is really excited about the prospect of our DS having the same name and was not at all bothered. In fact i think she will be a bit sad if we don't use the name. Also i always wanted the name Daisy for a girl and told a friend years ago she loved it too and named her first daughter daisy she. She apologised for stealing the name, but as we won't be having girls (this is last baby for us) it would have been a waste for her not to use it. We have had a couple of friends ask if it ok to use DS' name which of course we didnt mond but also wouldn't have minded if they didnt ask. I guess it's polite.

waitinggirl · 26/11/2008 22:43

re: names - use it! it's like a compliment, especially as you picked it a while ago

re: rings - i took mine off and put it on my necklace about 2 weeks ago - it's got an inscription in it which would be buggered if they had to cut it off and i didn't want to risk that.

help re: mattresses from you lovely ladies. we've been given a second hand swing crib, so we're going to put it by our bed for the first 6 months. we're also going to use (probably) a moses basket given to us second hand for downstairs. we've also bought a second hand bugaboo chameleon. do we have to buy new mattresses for all 3 of them???

also, seeing as i am due in 3.5 weeks, have i left it too late to get mattresses? surely they sell them at mothercare/babiesrus etc?

also, i have been scared shitless by talk of mattress wrapping - what is that all about? how can people be selling mattresses which are dangerous? i also noticed that research which someone posted was over a decade out of date. any info on what i should be doing? should we get a mattress that is waterproof or get a waterproof protector? help help help!!!

sorry to be so dim, i just feel absolutely bamboozled by all of this.

jumpjockey · 26/11/2008 23:09

just a very quick reply to WG - a very timely question because we've just ordered mattresses this evening, one for a bedsite crib and the other for the cotbed. We got them from www.babymattressesonline.co.uk and they are happy to ship as an urgent order so should get them next week. They have all sorts of different kinds and do lots of them made to measure so whatever you've got that needs one, they can make one to fit. We've gone for removable waterproof cover so you can wash the fabric one and the waterproof one goes underneath to protect the mattress itself.

Hello to everyone else, will reply properly tomorrow!

missmama · 26/11/2008 23:44

Hi all
After promising to be more involved it has just taken me 2 days to catch up again.
I am worried about my wedding ring also kayz but I haven't been able to remove it for about 8 years now, so it ain't coming off without some major interference

Congratulations to all the babies arriving and its not even December yet!

Having lots of pains here and 'discomfort' too. Painful braxton hicks at about 8 or 9 o clock every night.
I have also decided that walking will make this little lump come quicker so have been walking the boys to and from school every day. Its about a mile each way, but I got off lightly today at 3 miles as a friend gave me a lift home this morning.

I have a strange pain you might help me describe to the MW if you would. It hurts when I walk, between my legs, but not really in the lower foo foo area. (See why I am having trouble describing it)would it be my pelvis? Also feels as though the baby is going to fall out when I walk .

I didn't realise how many of us are in the Midlands so we could have a lovely meet up in the City Centre when we all have babies to show off.

kayzisexpecting · 27/11/2008 04:26

Morning,

I have got really bad back pain and I can't sleep at all. So I decided to get up so DH can get some sleep. I'm hoping this is leading to labour as I can't take another 2 weeks of this pain.

I hope everyone is ok and asleep(except Bisou).

I'm seeing the MW today so might see if she can suggest anything for my back.

OP posts:
kmp1 · 27/11/2008 08:03

morning - yet again another sleepless night! m/w yeaterday - head 4/5ths (but have previously been told my GP that it was fully engaged a week ago)!!??
Got some stuff for heartburn but haven't used it yet - she just said don't eat fruit combined with carbs -
Have noticed a lot of pigmentation and freckly things and little pimply things on my arms which is scary! I'm told these should go away after - but the dark spots??? Not sure how they suddenly vanish!! Oh the joys....
Arti I can relate to the lack of g'parent interest - I have it here as MIL is a little distant at best, and my parents are out of country however if they were here i'm not sure they'd be "desperate for us to go out so they can have the baby for the evening" liike most of the G'parents are on "A baby Story" or "bringing Baby home" that I've been watching on TV recently - in fact I know they wouldn't be as my brother has experienced... And MIL has better intentions but it will all seem like a hassle to her logistically I'm going to predict!
Oh well - perhaps I will see your secret wink when in hosp and can offer support!
Kayz I sleep with my little brace I got from Mothercare - doesn't look like it would do anything much but I tried it and it really does help - also don't need to carry my bump when I get up for the loo all through the night - I do it up quite firmly and it's a small size.

traceface · 27/11/2008 08:49

missmama - how many weeks are you? My bump dropped last week and feels like the baby will fall out when I stand up, and MW said it's now engaged (slightly) so maybe that had happened for you too? I'm 37+5 (weeks - that's not my age!!!)
WG - am also having mattress trauma...was planning to use the same mattresses in the cot and Moses Basket that we used for dd 4 years ago, but after all that talk of SIDS and fire retardant stuff leaking harmful spores etc am thinking I should replace them both. But the cot one has a cover on it, so can I just replace the cover? Years ago we wouldn't have known about these risks so am tempted to leave it and chill out, but then if (God forbid) my baby died and I hadn't done EVERYTHING I knew about to prevent it, could I ever live with that?!! I know I have a tendency to think like that (blame the PND) but can't get that out of my head, so will prob end up buying all new. See I'm no help at all am I?!!!
Well I thought it was IT last night...was pooped so went to bed early but had such horrid back ache and belly ache that I was still lying awake at midnight, thinking it was early labour. Kept expecting a big gush every time I went to the loo, but it didn't happen. Pain settled and today I'm normal again. This waiting game is hard!
Weird dream alert...I dreamt that I was expressing colostrum and using it as conditioner for my hair, and that people were saying how shiny and healthy my hair was, so I started providing the service for all my friends - everyone with lovely glossy colostrum heads!!!!

kayzisexpecting · 27/11/2008 08:59

Trace That dream really made me laugh so much. I also thought it was it last night too. But apart from being shattered I feel fine now.

Kmp I have got a brace from the physio but I can't sleep in it. It is huge and uncomfy. But my back is worse overnight so I'm going to ask MW today if there is anything else I can do.

OP posts:
JamInMyWellies · 27/11/2008 09:09

PMSL at the colustrum for hair condotioner.

I too have been a bit freaked by all the mattress wrapping talk. etc. But we decided to go with the same one I used for Archie we have had the cover off it and washed and it has been out airing in our bedroom for the last month. TBH even if we had a brand new one I know I would still be panicing all night long as I did with A for the first yr.

Any more bubbas overnight??

Olipop · 27/11/2008 09:16

Morning everyone! Just taken me hours to catch up as haven't been on for a few minutes days!!!!

Congratulations on all the new babies. It is so exciting. And all the talk of early labour symptoms! I am getting a bit impatient but have 4weeks and 2 days to go so could at worst have another 6 weeks.

Had a rotten cold so been feeling very sorry for myself. Also finding it hard to control the old pelvic floor after multiple sneezes. I can engage for one or two but any more and it's game over...lovely!

Love to all the new babies and mummies and those of us still hanging on in there!

Nolda · 27/11/2008 09:18

Congratulations Amy, Daisy, Verso and LadyT. I'm such an emotional wreck at the mo' every birth annoucement has me in tears.

I'm another one having the dodgy tummy pains but nothing significant actually happening. Hope baby comes soon.

SummerLightning · 27/11/2008 09:42

Morning everyone!
trace that dream is truly disgusting!
Mattress stuff, I don't know, I have a second hand pram and I hadn't even thought about having to get a new mattress for it?? So will be watching responses!

Oli sympathies on the cold, it sucks doesn't it!! Especially the pelvic floor thing.

Last night my baby went truly mental - it felt like he was trying to turn around. I think he is still the right way up - eek!! Then he went quiet overnight so I was a bit worried, but now he is back to his old tricks!

katie3677 · 27/11/2008 09:51

Thanks for all the advice on the baby name thing. I have to say that I am a bit p*ed off as I last saw this friend when we were both about 3 months pregnant and discussed names. The name she has gone with is one that I mentioned at the time and she didn't say anything about it. I really don't mind if our babies have the same name, but she is the kind of person that would mind. I texted her back saying 'great name, it's first on our list too' just to warn her, so we'll see what her reaction is. Rant over.

I took a couple of paracetamol before bed last night and it did seem to help a bit, at least for the first few hours. I did wake up in pain in the early hours of the morning, but seemed to have a really deep sleep until about 2/3am. I still feel like crap, but it might be worth a try for those of you having problems sleeping.

I'm trying to plan a really fun weekend for DS as it is his last as an only child, poor mite. Any suggestions from those of you in the Midlands for fun things to do that won't take me too far from home?

Got my last diabetes clinic (hopefully) this afternoon and then I'm putting myself on maternity leave after today (I work for myself) so had actually better go and tie up all my loose ends!

Hope everyone has a good day.

traceface · 27/11/2008 09:58

have just been looking at the SIDS website and their advice on mattresses is that ideally you should get a new mattress for each new baby but that if that's not possible, make sure it has a waterproof cover with no cracks or holes and that it still fits the cot snugly with no gaps. Will try to put link in but have never done it before...
www.fsid.org.uk/faq-current-topics.html#mattress
let me know if that works!

Beans33 · 27/11/2008 10:02

Morning all. katie - I would just go with the name as you chose it yourselves and if it's first on your list, then it's yours too, if you see what I mean.

I'm feeling rubbish today. Had an argument with DH last night about vitamin K. What is everyone's thinking on it? DH has a fear of needles and doesn't want the injection in the baby after it's born. Which kind of made me cross, because he doesn't even know what it is and he doesn't want the baby injected because he has a fear of needles - hasn't thought about the baby in this. Then started talking about me wanting things for my baby, as if I was acting like it was nothing to do with him. Which really wasn't fair. Still feeling pretty pissed off with him, to be honest. Consequently didn't get to sleep til 2am and I've got a horrible cold and feeling crap. Sorry, whinge whinge. Stupid turd.

Chutney - are you feeling any better? I'm a bit worried by what you said about Tommy's being so full. When we went for our tour, they said that they've only had to turn people away from the hospital twice this year... Erm, hello - that's really scary! December is such a baby boom and I'm a bit nervous that we're going to get turned away!!! AAGH.

Beans sorry you are feeling rubbish and had a row with DH. You are right - he needs to be really really careful about transferring his fear of needles to your DC. Make sure he never goes with you to the immunisations as it can be a crippling fear (esp for women who have to deal maybe more with them in pg related matters).

I am totally cool with needles - and have passed that onto both my DC who rarely whimper at jabs (and DD has allergies so gets bloods taken quite a lot which is quite sore).

For what it's worth - at my hospital they give oral Vitamin K - you may be able to ask for that. But your DH needs to catch a grip. As you say, it's not about HIM

Katie now that is a bit rude about your friend to be honest. Had it just been coincidence, I would have mentioned to see if she minded (as she got there first). But as it seems to be a case of name stealing - do what you want. Depends how muhc you speak to her and how much "my Harold/your Harold" you will have to enagage in and will it annoy you!

My potential boy's name is the same as my friends (but he is 5 - and they live in Brussells so not confusion!). But I will mention to her before using out of politeness.

Trace I think you are onto something!! I could see you next year on Dragons Den with your amazing colostrum hair conditioner. I actually bet it would be great for hair. Big supply issue - how you you "harvest" it - and what impact will this have on price point???

On the mattress I would do for unused (even among siblngs) just to be on the safe side - certainly for the one baby will be doing most amount of sleeping in. They don't cost much to get a new one.

Sorry to those who had bad nights last night. I kicked DH down to spare room, had a bath with candles and smelly stuff and had first nights sleep for three nights. Was still up and down but slept in between. Everything else seems to have calmed down so think this baby will be inside and cooking a while longer - which is good!

Debating - unpacking boxes in study/back to bed. Hmmm think the latter....

GettingBiggerBird · 27/11/2008 10:20

Morning all, it's fast and furious on here! The other thread I've been following on twins only has about a dozen of us on it, and gets about 3 posts a day at the most, so this is a bit daunting!

I know what you mean about the pelvic pain Mismama (I think it was you?), I have the same thing right at the front of my pubic bone where I can feel the separation and softness of the ligaments. It makes walking very tricky! I also seem to have one head on top of my cervix, and the other trying to get out of the bottom of the bump, they seem to be competing with each other as to who's coming out first . Let's hope it's not the one in the front of the bump, that would be very messy.

Mattresses: I've been given everything secondhand this time, and am using some of the matttresses as we know where they've come from and all have washable covers. Only thing we've had to buy was for the crib, as my friend sent this over with a scrap of foam which didn't fit - thought that was a bit scabby to use!

I'm so lucky that sleeping has only just started to become more difficult, I don't know how those of you who've been struggling for ages are all coping, it makes me so grumpy.

Baby names - ours are so old-fashioned I don't think there's any danger of overlap. But I don't see any reason why you can't have the same as your friends' babies.

SummerLightning · 27/11/2008 10:22

beans i have decided to go with the Vitamin K injection. I just put it on my birth plan and DH didn't even comment!! Though I have to say that your DH not liking needles does sound like a not very well thought out reason for not wanting it!! I just decided to say yes to it as it seems to be what most people do, and even though various people seem to think it is unnecessary in almost all cases, I seriously doubt it can do any harm. However, there are poeple on here who I am sure have done proper research into it so I would not listen to me necessarily (in fact I will be watching responses with interest)

SummerLightning · 27/11/2008 10:28

Oh and katie your friend sounds like a meanie!! You should definitely use the name if you mentioned it first. I think all my friends who might feasibly "pop" before me know the name we are planning to use to hopefully will not be a problem for us (don't mind if they copy us but seriously doubt they will!)

poisondwarf · 27/11/2008 10:29

Wow, really getting behind on this thread now...

Massive congrats to LadyT, Verso and now Amy/Anne. Hope all mums & babies are doing well.

Thanks for the compliment on DS's name Turnip (BTW how are you feeling now? any more twinges?) - I actually did happen to mention it in an email to Cat the other day so she is probably guffawing now - only joking, but it really is not everybody's cup of tea, although I've had much more positive responses since he was born than beforehand - to those of you who are thinking twice because of the reactions of friends & family I would say just forget it and go for the name you like. We too are struggling for girls' names - we've kind of chosen one which is nice but probably not distinctive enough for her to "own" it like DS can own his (or Verso & LadyT's DDs can own Frieda or Octavia - lovely names BTW), IYSWIM.

On the subject of mattresses, I've had a look on the The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) website and found this factsheet on the toxic gas hypothesis. Elsewhere on the site I found this cot death FAQ, which says that ideally you should have a new mattress each time (but doesn't say why) but "If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn?t sag". I also noticed that in the general advice section on how to avoid cot deaths mattresses are not even mentioned - haven't read the whole site though so if anyone spots anything else of interest on there (or elsewhere) please let us know (trace, just seen that I've x-posted with you but can't be arsed to rewrite - love the colostrum conditioner dream btw. I reckon it just might work)

FWIW I'm now erring on reusing our Moses basket mattress, which my gut instinct tells me is fine as it seems to be such a very minor risk factor (but you're right trace, you just never know and would have a hard time justifying it to yourself if anything was to happen). Ours was only used last year and is in excellent condition - DS was not a puky baby and generally had a flannel under his head anyway so I can't think it got much in the way of bodily fluids on it. Think I will just wipe it down with disinfectant and give it a good steam clean.

Had my 38 week appointment a couple of days ago. Everything fine, 1/5 engaged (which in this case means 4/5 out and palpable), which I hadn't noticed from my notes before but has been the same since 33 weeks! Only minor annoyance is that the baby is back-to-back (again - DS was too) which looks like it might scupper my fantasies of a 2-hour labour. MW said the baby will not budge now as she is partially engaged so there is no point in trying to turn her round (but then told me to spend a lot of time on the loo - ???). Last time DS was posterior at 39 weeks and they told me to try watching TV on all fours and using a gym ball. I don't know if it worked though (I suspect not) as I'm not sure if I had a long or short labour. I've asked this once before but didn't get any response but will give it another go - from what point do those of you who have given birth before measure the length of your labours? Also has anyone got any experience or good info on turning posterior babies (I know links have been posted before but I'm too lazy to hunt them down)?

Hey and I even persuaded the MW to let me have a urine test - my first since booking in! [proud emoticon]. I am being tested for Group B Strep, but boy did I have to beg! Also I was given the choice of a urine test or a vaginal swab and since the mw wasn't able to give me any information on which was more appropriate I just chose the urine test as it seemed easier, but now I'm thinking I should have gone for the swab - anybody got any thoughts? Effie, did they find your GBS out from a routine test?

Re people expecting you to predict when the baby comes - so annoying! My sis wants to come down on 14th/15th because she has a couple of days free (I'm due on 8th - DS was 5 days late). She really cannot get it into her head that I might not have had the baby by then and even if I have I might not be ready for visitors - she was arguing with me that 2nd babies come earlier and all that, but just couldn't seem to see that it would stress me out just knowing she is going to be there on those dates regardless of when the baby is born (can you guess she hasn't got kids?). Last time round I was due on the Monday and one of my (also childless) mates wanted to come down & stay with his GF for the weekend on the following Saturday - his attitude was "you'll have had the baby by then, what's the problem?". He got short shrift I can tell you, and good job as well as I was kind of busy giving birth on the Saturday.

Also the texts asking "any news?" - haven't had any this time so (and don't expect many either as people lose interest second time round, or at least that's how it's been for me) - but last time it drove me mad.

Beans re vit K - had the injection last time and will do again this time, as couldn't really see any reason why not (did a little bit of research but nothing in-depth). The baby will be too busy dealing with having just been born & all that to notice a little pin prick, let alone develop a phobia of needles!

This December baby boom thing - is it everywhere? Meant to ask at the hospital the other day but forgot.

Blimey I've written an essay!

Beans33 · 27/11/2008 10:32

I'm with you SL - kind of of the thinking that they wouldn't offer it if it was bad. I just think that saying it's because he doesn't like needles is a little bit weedy on his part. And a bit annoying. Ho hum. I will send him a positive article about it to him today, just so he can see some back up on my thinking about it.

Colostrum hair conditioner - brilliant idea! Although so far I've only managed to get out one droplet of it! Now seem to have dried up completely, like a raisin!!!
