Congratulations Sassafrass

Eandz - I agree with the others, your dr sounds pretty awful, you don't need someone undermining you all the time - is it too late to change now?

I have my "booking in" appointment at Kings tomorrow, which seems weird at this late stage, so suppose as I've been referred there due to a medical condition, only once I've seen a m/w will I see a consultant, so even more appointments...

bogie · 15/08/2008 21:40

Congratulations Sass the picture is beautiful both your dd's are lovley.

KashaSarrasin · 15/08/2008 21:47

Congratulations Sassafrass you have two beautiful daughters

eandz your consultant sounds like an arsehole - I hope you can find someone a bit nicer and more supportive to change to!

lollipopmother · 15/08/2008 22:16

EandZ - You can give me your consultants number and I'll give him a bollocking if your husband doesn't do the business!

Sass - I can't believe that your Katie was 7lb and 3 weeks early, she would've been a monster, what a trooper!

I've just been to a friends house and she's given me two bags of baby clothes, a bath, a car seat, a steraliser, some soft toys and a bag of reusable nappies! I don't think I have a big enough house for all this!!

I baked some cookies yesterday and today, they make the baby go ape shit! If anyone is worried about reduced baby movements get on to me and I'll send you some cookies, they're bound to perk your LO right up!

Pitufina · 15/08/2008 23:01

Congratulations Sassafrass !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad everything is ok. Welcome to the world little one!

pacita · 15/08/2008 23:54

Many congratulations, Sassafras - your two girls look absolutely gorgeous!

eandz · 16/08/2008 00:06

everyone,

thanks for the support! having you all to talk to makes up for not having to confide in my mother when we're in the middle of a meltdown!

my husband is pretty mad about it all. he's going to make sure the doctor backs off, and if he doesn't we'll just switch from consultant led care to midwife led care.

i'll name and shame the doctor after the next appointment (if we end up not doing business with him).

Sassafrass
CONGRATS! both your girls are beautiful and wow, she was a big one for only 37 weeks!

notcitrus · 16/08/2008 00:37

Congratulations sassafrass!

And cluebats to your consultant, eandz. Sounds like the worst side of private care. I can't remember - was there a medical reason you were having consultant-led rather than midwife-led care?

kiskidee · 16/08/2008 06:07

Congratulations Sassafrass.

EandZ, your consultant sounds like a dick. He sounds like the worst of the American-style consultant led system. Sorry, I know that you are American and i think the Still's disease is probably a reason why you would be under consultant care in the UK anyway. I am wondering though, that if you did say you wanted midwife led care and you did so under the NHS, you would find that consultant obstetricians working in the NHS would also not be over testing you and forcing you down a particular route. Even if you are a private patient, you still have the right to ask about the potential risks vs benefits of certain treatments and testing as well as the right to ask questions about advice given, ask for a second opinion, ask for time to consider an opinion and yes, even the right to refuse on type of treatment or and inquire about alternatives. Worst of all, that is what you are paying out of your own damn pocket to have! You may want to look at the AIMS.org.uk and Homebirth.org.uk websites to give you a better understanding about your rights as a pg woman, not because you want a HB but a lot of the info between HB and hosp. births overlap.

boy i can rattle on.

on a personal front, I am still hacking and sniffling away with the flu so have had a lousy week. At least it seems a pleasant morning from where i am sitting.

LittleConnie · 16/08/2008 08:19

Wonderful news Sassafrass congratulations!!! Your family are absolutely gorgeous, especially little Katie

Katie is fast asleep in her sling, she refuses to sleep unless someone is holding her so the sling is a godsend. Becky is kinda occupied with breakfast and Dora so I'll try to take the opportunity to give you all the gory details =)

I'm not sure when the contractions started, I kept waking up from the pain but it wasn't until 4am that I twigged that they were actually contractions and not the same constant period pain I had had for the last two days.

After half an hour or so of timing them I realised that we'd have to go to the hospital and get it checked out but I decided to try to wait until a more civilised time. So at 6.30 after having phoned the labour ward I woke up dh (who was grumpy and in denial) and dd1 who were dropped off at my pil's house.

Once on the labour ward I was hooked up to a monitor, baby's heartbeat was good and contractions were coming regularly. By now I was rather pleased that I was having a c-section as the pain was getting fairly bad and I was no longer keen to experience the pain in well eastablished labour. A doctor came in and did an internal exam, ouch!!! and informed me that I was in early labour and I would not be going home until the baby was born. Dh finally realised that it was for real and went out to get my bags. The doctor hadn't been able to say wether I'd be having the baby the same day by c-section or if they would try to wait and see. Luckily they decided to do the section pretty much straight away. Luckily I had had the foresight to not eat or drink anything other than water once I realised I had contractions.

After what seemed like an eternity I was walked to the theatre. It was all really calm and everyone seemed in a good mood. I had the spinal put in fairly quick and it made my bloodpressure drop so they injected me with something that made it go up again. This kept happening throughout the section which was rather unpleasant. After some very odd feelings we heard suction and a couple of seconds later Katie was born. I was feeling quite worried that she might have some breathing problems since she was a little early but she immediately started squawking and crying and it wasn't long before I was able to hold her. Since my bloodpressure kept dropping, making me feel sick and dizzy, Dh got to hold her for most of the time in theatre. I wasn't aware of it at the time, but it seems that I had a concealed abruption, which was my biggest fear throughout the pregnancy, and the amniotic fluid had a lot of blood in them. There was also some problems with the membranes. I'm quite pleased that we're not planning more children as another pregnancy would be very high risk.

Once in recovery I asked to have skin to skin with Katie and that was sorted for me straight away. She was really alert and kept looking at me. I was besotted and kept stroking, kissing and sniffing her

It didn't take very long for feeling to return to my legs and I immediately started wriggling them. Up on the ward I was able to breastfeed Katie but she wasn't very keen. She soon fell asleep and DH went to get Becky so she could meet her little sister. It was just lovely to see them together for the first time.

I kept being sick throughout the day and couldn't keep anything down so I was hooked up to a drip throughout the day. In the end they gave me an injection to stop me throwing up all the time.

In the middle of the night Katie decided it was time to start being more awake and she started feeding, very frequently but for very short periods of time. She really didn't like sleeping on her own but slept on my lap most of the night.

The next two days continued the same with visitors and me being very sleepy. In the evening Katie suddenly got the idea of feeding and fed for two hours straight. This jumpstarted the milk which started coming in properly the day after.

I insisted on being sent home on friday once I'd had my last injection for bloodclots and it was just lovely to get home. I'm managing well on just ibuprofen for the pain and Katie is eating well. I even got some decent sleep as DH has been taking Katie through the night and sleeping with her in the crook of his arm.

mumiyumi · 16/08/2008 09:00

morning all

eandz it really makes you wonder you put all your faith in these people!

I've managed to change hospitals as wasn't happy with my previous birth experience...had my appointment yesterday the consultant was lovely really put me at ease (well as much as she could) that this birth should be smoother and easier as my body knows what it's gotta do apparently the only minus point about the new hosp is the parking charges BLOODY EXPENSIVE lets hope i'm not in for long!

Have a good day i'm gonna decorate our hall today!

Sassafrass · 16/08/2008 09:09

Eandz, your consultant sounds like a nutter!

kiskidee · 16/08/2008 09:24

great birth story sass. sounds like it couldn't go smoother. is it you who bought a Gypsymama wrap?

Sassafrass · 16/08/2008 09:29

Yup KIskidee, it's really lovely. It's the first time I've used a stretchy wrap so I just tied it the same way I usually did my woven wraps. When I put Katie in it, she cried for 20 seconds and then fell fast asleep and she's been asleep for the last hour. It's great since I could sort out breakfast for dd1 and the guineapigs without trying to either do it one handed or have to have Katie crying and upset.

kiskidee · 16/08/2008 09:38

aaargh! the only problem now is that i may be tempted to buy one!

kiskidee · 16/08/2008 09:38

gypsymamas are soooo much prettier than mobys etc.

Sassafrass · 16/08/2008 09:41

I know! I love the way it looks and it is extremely soft which Katie seems to love.

You know, when you think of how much buggies cost I think you're entitled to lots and lots of different wraps =)

Once dh is up I'll get him to take a picture of me carrying Katie in it and put it in my profile.

kiskidee · 16/08/2008 10:32

Sass did you see the link I once made of my no so small sling collection yet? Its was in an earlier antenatal thread.

potxola · 16/08/2008 12:16

Congratulations Sass, that's so exciting! And what a great birth story, really positive, despite the excitement with your blood pressure. 4 down, 70+ to go!

I am beginning to get vague pelvic discomfort when I walk fast or move without thinking about nursing it. Not quite sure if it's pain caused by head beginning to engage and pushing everything around (midwife said it was 1/5 engaged, 4/5 out, on thursday) or very mild SPD. Luckily is not remotely crippling, just a bit achey.

lol starlight, I listened to my natal hypnotherapy cd this afternoon and was struggling to stay sitting up. I ended up on the floor, lying on my side and I am sure i dozed off. Just before it ended, i woke up with the lady saying 'on the count of one you will....' maybe there is something to it.
