Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

What? You are just now considering maternity wear? And this isn't even your first, is it? SO UNFAIR!

welshmum · 10/01/2005 09:56

But I am in my 'fat trousers' Uwila - the ones I wore before losing shedloads after dd....so doesn't count really

mrsflowerpot · 10/01/2005 09:59

Happy New Year everyone

Hope everyone and bumps are well - it's going to take me ages to catch up after so long. Nightmare December with work, managed to (mostly) stay off mumsnet otherwise it would never have got done! Lovely Christmas and now back, looking at the rain and avoiding work again.

I'm 18 weeks this week - 20 week scan in a fortnight, which I think is when we are going to tell ds (who is nearly 4). Feel a bit nervous about taking him with us, what are the rest of you with other children doing? We had a bit of stress a couple of weeks ago after the triple test, which came back as 1 in 250, a bit of a higher than normal risk for my age and just on the cut off of when they call you back to talk about amnio etc. The Dr I saw at the hospital was lovely, gave me another scan to check my dates and a good look to see if he could see any soft markers but couldn't, and he really put the whole level of risk in perspective for me, so we decided not to go for amnio and I must say I feel completely relaxed about it again now after a few days of not thinking about anything else.

Re the maternity clothes, haven't bought any yet, I'm still really in-between and am living in a couple of pairs of trousers that were a bit big before. But will have to do something soon. There are more 'under bump' things than there were last time I was pg, so I wonder if they will be better at this stage than the ones with the huge stretchy panel at the front. Am going to do a Next order and see. Haven't actually put any weight on yet (don't hate me, I have plenty of extra anyway, and I lost quite a bit in the first 3 months when I couldn't eat which hasn't gone back on yet) but am definitely bigger round the middle, which is wierd.

katzguk · 10/01/2005 10:15

welshie - this is garduation number 2 for me!! did my BEng one which was fun and this one is for my PhD, makes it seem more real somehow even though i submitted a year ago and passed back in march last year! i just missed out on the July graduation but that actually worked out well because i wouldn't have been ablt to go. So am really excited. DH has the day off work and DM and DD are coming too.

RE scans and babies, we are planning on taking DD to see ours but then we know that we are the first apointment after lunch and in theory it should be running on time!

Lua · 10/01/2005 10:36

Morning all!
I decide today to inaugurate the maternity pants I bought last month. Oh, why did I wait so long!!?? I 've been surviving in "fat pants" and jeans with the help of rubber bands, but it is so more confortable to have proper pants! I won't take it out any more!!!
BTW mrs.F, it is an "under the bump" one. I highly recommend it. It fits so much better than the big pannel thing, and is also much more confortable.
I will have my 20 week scan this friday, and am thinking about taking DD. I am still not sure how much she understands yet (She is 26 months old). I bought some books explaining birth and pregnancy for her, and she seems to be excited about the scan part in the book, so I think it will be OK.
Berolina - Good to hear from you and that you are feeling more secure. Just wait until the beannie start moving in earnest.. it would be great!

katzguk · 10/01/2005 10:43

Lua - your DD's the same age as mine, can you let us know how it goes with taking her please.

MrsWednesday · 10/01/2005 11:29

Lua, my DS is also about the same age as your DD so I'd be interested to read how it goes if you do take her with you.

I'm wearing a maternity top for the first time today! It's so nice not be worried about whether it's riding up and showing my (hairy - glad I'm not the only one!) belly off. Still struggling on in non-maternity trousers etc, but my post-DS fat wardrobe is coming in handy. I'm waiting for pay-day at the end of the month then I'm going to invest in some proper stuff, but I'm going under the bump rather than over this time - I'm wearing my low-cut jeans a lot of the time and they are really comfortable. Bump must be higher than last time.

Mrs F, it's good to see you back, I was wondering where you were. And NQWWW. There's quite a few from the first threads who haven't been back for a while.

Good luck to everyone with scans this week - we're nearly half way through now . Hope everything goes ok at the dentist Charleypops. Glad I'm not the only paranoid one JonahB. I think I just need something to worry about - thanks for the reassurance.

Berolina, I'm so pleased you are starting to relax and enjoy your pregnancy a bit more. We are all coming up to the good bit now - starting to look properly pregnant, feeling movement etc, it's fantastic. Remind me of this if I start complaining about anything...

Bubaloo - I reckon the 'rumbles' sounds like baby!

Hope you're all having a happy Monday.x

welshmum · 10/01/2005 11:41

Can't remember if I asked this before but where is the thread about the jan 22nd meet up in London? I can't find it (probably me being dense)

MrsWednesday · 10/01/2005 12:10

It's in the ante-natal club section I think. Was just looking at another thread about ER starting tonight and I saw your message about you getting too over-excited when it's on and had to laugh because that's what happens to me. The adrenaline starts pumping and then I can't sleep for ages afterwards. Will have to tape it I think.

Lua · 10/01/2005 12:13

ER? where? when?
I must be the biggest looser ever, but I just can figure out the TV schedule here!
I have a TV basically to watch two shows: ER and West Wing, but I can never figure where they are on!
I might have to add desperate housewifes now... anyone got hooked last week?
You TV addicted [smaile]

Lua · 10/01/2005 12:14

make that: your TV addicted

Uwila · 10/01/2005 12:16

meet up thread

LipstickMum · 10/01/2005 12:35

Hi everyone,
You all sound well. I'm slowly getting over the cold but it's taking forever.
I'm not in maternity gear yet. But I do only have 1 pair of jeans that will fit and most of my tops ride up a bit. When we have the meet I am going to do some shopping in Hennes and Top Shop, for tops mainly I think.

Have a craving for Coco Pops at the moment which I am quite enjoying!

Cold chicken sandwich for lunch today, in front of Neighbours I think

MrsWednesday · 10/01/2005 12:35

ER starts tonight at 10pm on Channel 4!!! (so I've read on here anyway).

And yes, I watched Desperate Housewives and it was brill.

LipstickMum · 10/01/2005 12:41

Hmm what is everyone watching? I used to watch ER about 100 years ago, when George was in it, Noah Wyle was a lowly intern and that nice black nurse was huge, now I just can't keep up with what's going on!

My dp is a bit of a TV nazi and hates me wathcing any soaps. I have to say I would watch a lot more chit if I didn't have him around!

My faves at the moment are Corrie (obviously), Enders (out of habit), Desperate Housewives, Little Britain, Judge John Deed, oh, and Antiques Roadshow

welshmum · 10/01/2005 12:43

Thanks Uwila I've finally managed to sign up.
[{smile]Mrs Wed - glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get out much!
Lua - West Wing is on Channel 4 on Friday nights at about 7.35pm. This obviously works for me as I have time to calm down before bed.
Lipstick - I treated myself to a funky jumper which is not maternity but will work really well to the end. Very pleased with myself I was - reduced by more than half in the sale.

welshmum · 10/01/2005 12:48
  • for Mrs W as I failed the first time.
Lippy - I am mostly watching West Wing, Holby City, Enders (am trying to stop as it's so crap)Child of our Time, and anything else that looks decent. Will give Desperate Housewives a go seeing as everyone else seems to like it.
LipstickMum · 10/01/2005 12:51

Housewives show is on too late for me I have to tape it, which is pretty good coz then it's about 12 mins shorter without any ads.
I never got into the West Wing, just one of those shows that passed me by!

I also like Hugh Fearnley-W when he was on with all his alternative lifestyle stuff.

God, I have such a tickly cough right now, it wont stop. I woke up this morning feeling like I'd cracked a few ribs I've been coughing that much over the last day or 2

mcmudda · 10/01/2005 12:55

Morning everyone!

Beautiful blue skies here and I'm in a great mood

Finally not feeling exhausted all the time, much to dh's relief and I'm enjoying being preg this week for the first time.

Last night we watched Sea of Souls which was ok apart from the utter wooden-ness of "Sexy Lexie' out of Monarch of the Glen. Other than that dh is forcing me to sit through Battlestar Gallactica (which I secretly like) and Stargate, which is pants.

Fortunately we still have the extended Lord of the Rings to watch with all the making-of documentaries and being a bit of a film freak, I'm looking forward to a completely free night to veg in front of the TV.

Like when I was pg with ds, this bubba wakes up a couple of minutes after a massive chocolate intake - bring on the sugar rush mummy!!

Anyone looking for maternity clothes bargains - Vertbaudet have a great 50% off sale at the moment. I got a cool top with a question mark on the bump and a really comfy red fluffy jumper both half price and nice quality - worth a look!

Dh is du loads of holiday before March, so we're going to book a week to decorate the nursery - can't wait!!

Ds knows there's a baby in mummy's tummy, but it doesn't stop him sitting on it! Any good books for explaining pregnancy to a 2 yr old?

Keep well ladies! Jealous of your meet up - is anyone in Scotland??

tribpot · 10/01/2005 13:02

You should give West Wing a try if you can Lipstick! The early series are great, the most recent two (haven't been on UK telly yet) are pretty mediocre. I love Hugh F-W's stuff as well, my parents have a house in Lyme Regis so I like seeing Lyme and Bridport and Dorchester on TV! (I have to look away when he's doing stuff like preparing cows' stomachs or skinning eels).

I've got a tickly cough as well, one of those where if you cough you feel like you're going to throw up. V harsh, am I not done with throwy-up feelings yet?!

Also not graduated to maternity gear yet but have basically two pairs of trousers that fit me now, one of which are my wedding trousers!

Lua · 10/01/2005 13:13

I bought four books for DD. The two I really like are
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0859539733/ref=pd_luc_mri/002-5865742-4972033?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

and

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0859539741/ref=pd_luc_18_lc_ax0//002-5865742-4972033?v=glance&s=books

Both of them don't have any words and the main characthers is of undefined sex, so you can adapt to your own situation.
The other two books, I tried I didn't find the images too helpful, although the text is cute.

My DD love books! So I would love to know any other books that people liked

teabelly · 10/01/2005 13:34

Afternoon all

Had a frantic morning supposed to be doing final two days of year end deadlines but instead spent most of it trying to chase down my friend who's due on the 19th and went missing last night/yesterday morning...only to find that her phone had charged down and she was bemused at all the fuss!!

Maternity clothes - sort of in them and not quite...am wearing a couple of tops already and my underbump jeans - very comfy, but they slip down a bit and I feel like I'm always pulling them up...but I still have a few trousers that fit (from after I had ds but wasn't quite back at my old size).

Katz we managed to potty train ds over Christmas!! I was on the verge of giving up after 3 days of piddles on the floor and him no nearer asking to go or even seeming to realise that he was going!! Then along came wonderful wonderful nursery - can't praise them enough. In one day they had him down to just two accidents and since then we've had only three accidents (and one of those was on a 2 hour journey so I can't blame him!). Good luck with your dd . Have a great day on thursday too!

Gosh 20 week scans already - doesn't time fly...is anyone finding out what they're having? Although I'm 20+2, in Beds we have our 20 week scan at 22-23 weeks...so it's another fortnight for me and I'm getting soo impatient - I want to know now [stamping little foot emoticon]!!

TV - luckily dh is as much a soap tart as I am so in our house we are mostly watching Emmerdale, Eastenders, Corrie, Little Britan (last one this week, boo hoo), Holby City (Teachers and Early Doors when they're on), Neighbours (when I'm off on a thursday and friday) and as of last week Desperate Housewives...God I watch a load of sh*t

katzguk · 10/01/2005 13:38

thanks teabelly potty training is going really well, we haven't had anywhere near as many accidents as i thoguht we would have, but we have the oposite problem she is worse at nursery!! but they are being great about it.

LipstickMum · 10/01/2005 13:44

Last one of Little Britain already I must have missed some, how long was the first series?? 8 episodes??

Time for lunch...

teabelly · 10/01/2005 14:01

Katz our nursery's trick was to leave him in trousers but without any pants. This took away the comfort factor of having close garments on like nappy/pants, and made him more aware of his body's sensations, don't know if this kind of thing would help your dd...or maybe she's just having too good a time to take any notice? Still so long as you're happy with her progress she'll get there quick enough it's amazing how kids can turn things around in just one day when they're ready.

Lipstick - yeah I think it was about 8 episodes - not many really.
