Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

So, if we want to book one of us has to pretend that the child is having a birthday?? Plus, Scraggy and Pink aren't sure about train times because of station closures etc etc.
Let me see what your saying on the 'meet' thread...

Uwila · 13/01/2005 14:35

I think we should go ahead and book for 12:00. Then, change the booking if necessary to accommodate Pink. We are getting awfully close to the day. I would hate to miss it all together because we waited too long.

Do you have to prove that it is someone's birthday?

By the way, I think these fake names are a bit silly now, so I'm going to be the first to reveal that my first name is Cassie.

LipstickMum · 13/01/2005 14:45

~Waves~ Hi Cassie! Sorry, to be a bit paranoid, but I'd rather not print my real name on here I am obviously going to tell you all when we meet though!

Uwila · 13/01/2005 14:50

That's okay because I just love the name "Lippy". It cracks me up every time I type it.

Uwila · 13/01/2005 14:51

Lippy Lippy Lippy[grim]

berolina · 13/01/2005 16:01

(bursts in thrilled, rudely interrupting conversation)

I'm absolutely certain Samuel has just been kicking!!!! Funny little movements (like little 'pops' or prods) on left-ish side of lower abdomen, a whole series of them.

WOW!!!!

Uwila · 13/01/2005 16:25

Oh, so unfair. I don't even know the sex, and you have a name. Actually I have two names, just don't know which one to use until I get the sex confirmed -- hopefully on Thursday week!

Congratulations on the kicks, though.

JonahB · 13/01/2005 17:52

Berolina, congrats on the kicks. I am really jealous . I get the odd twinges, but i don't know if they're twinges or baby foot.

We are struggling so much with names. We've got one girls name we like and one boys name we quite like. So far, my DH is quick to dismiss all my suggestions, but seems very slow in coming forward with his own ideas. I love your choice though. Unfortately, my brother has nicked it for his little boy. As i'm the youngest of all my brothers and cousins, half the good ideas have already been taken. How's everyone else getting on with names?

katzguk · 13/01/2005 19:03

well i'm all graduated out now, got to wear the poncy red robe and had the customery photos taken.

I have got a very wiggly baby in my tummy too, DH has felt it too!!

on the names front we are swinind towards
Reuben (Ben) Thomas Wiliam for a boy and
Cordelia (leah)Margaret for a girl

Honest opinions please

Scraggyaggy · 13/01/2005 20:18

London meet - Right, I think Pink and I are going to get the train that gets in at 12.30, so we can be there by 1. Can we just agree that's all ok so we can book our tickets please? (It'll be cheaper if we pre-book by Friday). Thanks!

Scraggyaggy · 13/01/2005 20:21

Katz - Glad you had a good day! Can't believe dh has felt your baby already - my dp is going to be so jealous. He's already moping because he wants to know when HE'll get to feel something too!!

I like your names a lot. We've only got a girl's name - Lucy Valerie, but can't agree on boy's at all, so we'll prob have a boy!

OP posts:
LipstickMum · 13/01/2005 20:22

Hehe Uwila, it's funny, because 'Lippy' would suggest that I am just that, 'a bit lippy', but nothing could be farther from the truth!

Congrats on graduating Katz!!! Re the names. Dp and I have a couple of first names for a boy and we're really funny about telling, we wont tell until the baby is born, absolutely no-one, it's like our little secret. Tbh, I would hate to comment on the names you've chosen, whether I like them or not. What if everyone says they hate them? It's your choice, don't let people sway you too much.

Scraggyaggy · 13/01/2005 20:26

Oooh - can't wait to meet up! Will be fun and frightening at the same time!

OP posts:
charleypops · 13/01/2005 20:37

Berolina, how lovely - I'm getting little movements too which I have only recently convinced myself are not trapped wind!

Congratulations Katzguk. I DO like Cordelia for a name. I would try not to shorten myself because it's so nice. Might nick it

As for the London meet, I'm now keeping an eye on what you're doing as the appt I had with my dentist has been cancelled (long story, see my separate thread if you need some boring bedtime reading) because I'm rather tempted myself (especially if Lippy's not actually very lippy and I can be a bit shy myself)

How about booking a Nando's they're really child and group riendly, cheapish and cheerful?

PinkArjuna · 13/01/2005 21:22

Uwila - I eat Bio yogurt everyday Oh well. On a good note the constipation seems to be a touch better. Not so painful anyway. Gosh I am a mine field of physical ailments.

Has anyone else bleeding gums? I am having a course of dental treatment at the moment. well have been for the past year - seems to be taking that long No NHS dentists in Cardiff and the Dental hospital student buggered up alot of my teeth so I am having to have the fillings removed and redone by a proper dentist now. Gosh the luxury of living in England Dentist next door who does all the white fillings for free I'll quiz the dentist next time I go. I know it is supposed to be common but well it is worrying. I want teeth left by the end of this.

Megi - I think they are treating you very poorly. Also parents complaining - they had to go through carrying their little darlings for 9 months and should cut you a bit of slack I remember when I was in junior school the whole class being really excited as the teacher told us week by week what was happening with her baby. Asking questions and things. It isn't a sin or anything.

I know why I can't sleep! the damn baby is awake! It kicked so forcefully the other day I felt like my tummy had a done a jump mostly it just farts though however it is suddenly much more noticable than last week. However it wakes up about 3.45am and I have been unable to get to sleep until 7am most days cos of activity. I am the walking dead. I am up late working for college so just when I go to bed thinking I am suffering dementia I can't get any sleep.

In a better mood despite feeling tired and things. I have gotten my course work done and consider myself lucky I don't have some bastard ex making claims on my unborn baby. Feel quite empowered actually doing it alone Got most of my New years resolutions under my belt Joined a womens reading group. Going to do a continued course at the university on the changing face of feminism - Oh and I might be going out on a sort of date! as friends though but it is nice I'll meet someone new

On the 26th I'll hopefully know if the bump is a boy or a girl Though I bet the bum will be facing the screen or some such other nonsense so I can't see. It is my child after all - bit stubborn perhaps

PinkArjuna · 13/01/2005 21:28

Katzguk - Cordelia is a good name From the tragic King Lear - she is a saintly good sort of girl too. Always good to have a strong name with a bit of meaning I think. Also intergrity. Perhaps I like Shakespeare a bit too much

I only have to please myself with names

PinkArjuna · 13/01/2005 21:33

Oh yes sorry just keep reading down then having to write again.

Scraggyaggy - I'm called Lucy! My cousin is too. Also every school I have been to there has been at least 1 Lucy in my class and on average 4 in my year. Not to mention in one school with only 500 pupils there were 32 Lucy's or there abouts. Just a warning. I also had 2 best friends growing up both called Lucy. Everyone seems to choose it...

PinkArjuna · 13/01/2005 21:35

most popular baby names

berolina · 13/01/2005 22:10

Katz - like your names.

Pink - yes, I'm getting bleeding gums too, but I have them on and off even when not pg. They are supposed to get worse in pg - mine haven't really. Have a dentist appointment later this month - I do NOT like dentists so that'll be, er, fun.

JonahB · 14/01/2005 08:02

Morning All,
Pink - I've had bleeding gums too. Definitely worse in pregnancy for me.
Katzguk - congratulations on graduating!!! I hope you have some dapper photos of yourself in a gown . Mine were just TERRIBLE.
Uwila - you said in a previous note (sorry, takes me a while to catch up) that you didn't like the travel system cos they outgrow it quickly. Do you mean they outgrow the carseat and the buggy attachment that fast? If you dont use a travel system for a new born, what sort of arrangement would you recommend instead? Apologies for these questions to all you second timers - its like a minefield of information out there and my addled pgy brain is struggling..

tribpot · 14/01/2005 08:09

Ah, baby names. I am banned from practically all of the popular boys' names on that list because I am not allowed to choose anything beginning with J (all my brothers' names begin with J) and we already have a Thomas, a Daniel, a Matthew, a Henry in the family and probably an Oliver as well.

From the girls names I am banned from J (of course) and E as we already have an Emily and an Eleanor and it gets too confusing as it is. If my brother does choose Oliver for his next offspring, I might pretend I'm going to choose Olivia to wind my mum up I do like Olivia but Oliver and Olivia would definitely be too confusing.

So, back to the drawing board for me! I guess I'd like something not in the Top 20 really, but Amelia is my fave for a girl at the moment.

teabelly · 14/01/2005 08:43

Morning all,

Have to be quick supposed to be taking ds to mil so I can go and get my hair cut and have just discovered that the road out of the village has been closed for repairs so will now take me 25mins to get there instead of 10!

Katz, congrats on the graduation - glad all went ok. Like the names, although with an unusual name myself (Timea [tim-ay-a, hungarian name - something to do with a goddess of virtue, ha ha ha if only my mother had known] - but everyone calls me Tim) I know it can be quite hard to deal with - at least the names you've chosen are easy to pronounce - I have to say mine about 3 times before others can pronounce it!

Scraggy/Pink - I would say go ahead and book your trains we can deal with the restaurant later. Charley is there a Nandos in central london? what kind of food do they do? Otherwise we could do a TGI Fridays if they take bookings? Or else I can book the Rainforest, I'll say it's a party and book it for 12.30 then we can just say that two are held up (and we'll see scraggy/pink asap)- I don't think there's alot they will do about that - what does everyone else think? - will post on the meet thread too...

Will try and catch up after my hair appoint...

katzguk · 14/01/2005 09:04

morning all,

glad to here you liek our names although i would be offended if you didn't the reason i asked is because i feel that you are probably a reasonable cross section of people and if you like the names then baby is unlikely to be teased for having an odd name.

I'll have changed my mind again before he/she arrives anyway!!

here a link for you all
babyname

it lets you put your town and possible baby name and tells you how many children of that name there are, so you get a more regionalised popularity of a certain name

LipstickMum · 14/01/2005 09:29

Cool link Katz, thanks.

Tessiebear · 14/01/2005 11:18

Morning all !!!!! We are back on line (the releif!!!)
Hope you are all well - have done a bit of catch -up reading, but not much.
I am 16 weeks and all my sickness has gone. Am feeling pretty damn good at the moment actually and enjoying my re-discovered energy!!! My bump already looks pretty huge and i keep getting people coming up and congratulating me as they have just noticed my bump!
Had a midwife app today and heard the heartbeat for the first time! - felt really emotional - i seem to appreciating this pregnancy much more than my first two (possibly because it will be my last)
Have my 20 wk scan on Valentines day and DH and i have decided to fing out the sex but not to tell anyone in RL! Mumsnetters will of course have this exclusive information!
We have already decided on names Emma Louisa for a girl and Paul Joeseph for a boy (PJ for short) Paul is my husbands name and it means a lot to him to carry on the family name and as there are no other boys names i am greatly attracted to (i have after all used up my favourite two on my DS's!) i have agreed!
Great to be back!
P.S KATZGUK - love Cordelia - love shakesperian names - i was apparently nearly called Hermione
Like Reuben too - dont think i would shorten it - it is a lovely name
