Hello, just thought I would see if I'm the only one! Due my first baby in November

OP posts:

MrsMcJnr · 11/07/2007 16:08

Hello Babylovesmuffis think we?ve met before, I remember your name congratulations! when are you due? I asked about a tour when I was at the Obst recently and was told that I?ll be part of my AN classes ? ages to go until those! I?m only 13 weeks. Thanks for the info on NCT, must get them organised thanks also for the info on Healthcare Now.

Does anyone know or has anyone been tested for Group B Strep? I had a Strep related virus a few years back and really think I should be tested just in case, just wondering how much resistance I?ll come up against! Thank you ladies

Babylovesmuffins · 11/07/2007 17:56

MrsMcJnr I'm due on 22nd August, so not long to go now!! Only 1.5 weeks left at work thank God congratulations on your pregnancy too and I hope your scan goes well tomorrow. How have you been feeling?

I'm afraid I don't know much about the Strep B virus, only that if I want to be tested I can ask my midwife to organise it through a private company when I'm 37 weeks and I think it costs about £30 (from memory )... but maybe if you've had the virus before they'll be able to test for you on the NHS?? There have been a few threads about Strep B on Mumsnet - maybe you could do a search?

Let us know how things go tomorrow.
x

babyluvsmuffins st johns is an ok unit downstairs in labour and delivery but im afraid ive always found upstairs in the maternity ward a different matter.
Downstairs nothing is too much they are a truely fantastic mob but upstairs its almost like they dont give a monkeys and want you out as soon as they can possibly manage.

Babylovesmuffins · 12/07/2007 09:01

Thanks miniandme. I've heard ERI turn beds around as fast as possible too and they can send you home within 6-12 hours if you've had a normal delivery (and they need the bed!!). I'm not sure that I'll want to stay in that long anyway as I'm not a big fan of hospitals! As long as the staff in delivery are good then that's the main thing

MrsMcJnr · 12/07/2007 12:21

Wow! Not long at all Babylovesmuffins and how exciting to be finishing work soon ? I?m planning to finish up the Friday before Christmas ? we?ll see I?m feeling much better after the scan the very best bit was seeing beanie (aka skeletor) again ? he/she is the perfect size, has a beating heart and madly waving legs and arms with little hands and was very curious about us watching it (until photo time when he/she got shy and turned it?s back on us ) it made me well up, it was the most wonderful thing I have ever seen of course we have to wait for the Down?s part now but keeping a PMA thanks for the info on the Step

Oh dear miniandme that sounds awful! I know my friend was left with a catheter for days and nearly sued but I really thought that was an isolated incident. I thought St Johns tended to let you stay longer than other hospitals to help you with breastfeeding? I guess after your first that becomes irrelevant?

Bettymamma · 12/07/2007 12:30

MrsMcj, found you here - I'm so EXCITED you had a good scan. Lovely news.

Good luck Edinburgh ladies.x

MrsMcJnr · 12/07/2007 14:37

Thank you

Babylovesmuffins · 13/07/2007 09:30

Hi MrsMcJnr. Fantastic news about your scan! It's great to see them moving around. Our LO put his/her hands over its face when we had our last scan (camera shy!! ) Hope all the other tests go well, once they're over you can really relax and start to enjoy things!

I wish someone had advised me to finish up work about 6 weeks before my due date. As it is I'll be finishing about 4.5 weeks before I'm due and the last few weeks have been really tough!! I know everyone's different - lots of people told me not to finish too early as I'd just get bored - but to be honest if you have quite a demanding job, all you want to do is be at home and rest! You'll have an exciting Christmas this year

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 10:38

Thank you I know what you mean, I think I will be shattered by the time my mat leave comes, I?ll be 36 ½ weeks by then ? that said, I have a funny feeling this baby will be early, I was my Mum?s 1st and was almost a month early, my sister?s 1st was a month early too I reckon around Christmas time but we?ll see ? maybe be a Burns baby instead!

miniandme · 13/07/2007 12:56

aww it seems ages before im having my first scan!! not until the 8th of august when i will be 14+5 and thats the only scan we are offered though i haev booked a private 4d for the 3rd of november too,i want my scan

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 12:59

Mini - I hear you, my dating scan is next Friday when I'm 14+13. Paid for the nuchal so get a sneak preview (oh and to test for Down's ) yesterday . We were given a £50 off voucher for a 3D/4D at the clinic yesterday but it said price on application so I hate to think how much it costs!

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 14:28

Ladies, found a LOVELY shop today. It's called Vanilla Bloom in William Street. It has all sorts of lovely clothes and lingerie including the best selection of maternity jeans I have seen, lovely baby clothes and nice smellies plus treatment rooms. Well worth a visit.

Babylovesmuffins · 13/07/2007 16:28

Hi there. It's frustrating living in Edinburgh as you only get one scan on the NHS during your pg - although my m/w reckons things will change next year (which isn't much good to any of us ). We had our dating scan on NHS at 14 weeks, then paid £150 to have an anomaly scan done at Healthcare Now at 21-weeks. I can't remember how much the 3D/4D scan would have been but we couldn't really justify spending anymore money on scans.

Miniandme - not long to go until the 8th August!! The waiting's the worst part isn't it?!

MrsMcJnr - I've heard of Vanilla Bloom and was going to pop in and have a look. I work at the other end of George Street so it's not very convenient at the moment but maybe when I go off on ML in a week's time

BTW ladies, if anyone is interested, I've been going to really good Prenatal Yoga classes at the Aditi Yoga Centre on Alva Street. They're very good for relaxation and flexibility, plus foetal positioning at a later stage I've found the Tuesday night classes the best but they also do them on Weds & Thurs evenings and some lunchtimes...

MrsMcJnr · 14/07/2007 22:50

I know what you mean about the scans. It is just so unfair when government guidelines state that we should all have a 20 week scan . My consultant told me last week that she cannot believe how far behind we are here, when she was a house officer in London 15 years ago women were getting nuchal scans on the NHS and we still don?t have them here, Ironic really when the Scots discovered ultrasound! She did say (as your MW did) that that will change in 2009 and that the double test would be phased out and the nuchal and anomaly scans would be routine here ? but as you say, that?s a bit late for us. I guess that?s one advantage of being ?high risk? I get lots of scans later on. We won?t be paying for a 3D/4D either so if you know of anyone who?d like my £50 off voucher let me know

I work between Fredrick and Hanover Street Babylovesmuffins so I just about got to William Street, had a browse and had to come back but I guess the exercise will have done me good They are offering 20% off their treatments at the moment so it would be a good time to book some pampering ? they said they had a website and that you can book by email but I haven?t found it yet.

That yoga sounds great ? I?ve always loved yoga were they expensive?

ara · 15/07/2007 13:52

Hi again everyone, I had taken my eye off this thread, but looks like there are a few of us now!! I'm 22 weeks pg with my first baby, and living in Edinburgh - although hoping to move before the baby comes.

Agreed about the scans - we are considering the 4d one as our friends had it and we were all bowled over by their DVD! Although it DOES feel a bit like opening your presents before Christmas!

Have all the pg ladies decided where and how they are going to give birth? I started a thread about the ERI a while ago and got some really interesting links to birth statistics sites.

I think we're going to try doing it at home if we can.

OP posts:
MrsMcJnr · 16/07/2007 10:58

Hello Ara nice to meet you! Where are you hoping to move to? We are hoping to move back into the City from West Lothian before our baby arrives. If you do fancy a 4D, I have £50 off voucher for Healthcare NOW in Stafford Street that I won?t be using so you are welcome to it if it would help. We are having ours at St John?s but know lots of friends who have had theirs at ERI. I?ve heard lots of different things about it. You are brave considering home for your first, good for you my sis had her 2nd at home (rented a birthing pool) and she said it was incredible. She is in London though.

Babylovesmuffins · 16/07/2007 14:00

Hi all. Congrats on your pregnancy too Ara! I'd love to have a homebirth but just don't feel brave enough (or maybe my DH wouldn't be brave enough!! ). We could have gone to ERI or St John's and I'd heard good things about both tbh. We ended up choosing St John's as it seems to be a little bit quieter but that was all.

MrsMcJnr the yoga classes are about £68 for a block of 8 classes - have a look at their website

We're also going to Hypnobirthing classes at the yoga centre which are excellent. I'm hoping I'll be able to put all the techniques into practice so as I have as natural and as calm a birth as possible Will let you all know how it goes in case any of you are interested in trying Hypnobirthing!!

MrsMcJnr · 16/07/2007 14:25

Thanks for the link I would be interested in how you get on with the hypnobirthing - friends went and he gave very funny anecdotes about it - horrible day!

Stefka · 16/07/2007 14:32

I am gate crashing as I don't live in Edinburgh. I saw that some of you mentioned hypnobirthing - I live in Falkirk and was wondering what was in the area Where were the courses that people here did?

Babylovesmuffins · 16/07/2007 17:38

Hi Stefka. I don't know about other parts of Scotland but I do know there are only 3 qualified Hypnobirthing teachers in Edinburgh. I go to the Aditi Yoga Centre (Helen Briggs) on Alva Street but I'm not sure who the other 2 are. I think one of them is Pauline something???

In fact, have a look at this Stefka - it looks like there are several therapists in the Falkirk area. Good luck.

Stefka · 16/07/2007 18:03

Is it very expensive? We don't have a lot of money at the moment.

miniandme · 16/07/2007 19:23

Well i was considering a home birth but was promptly told by my mw that it wasnt a good idea, even though this is baby number 4 i have 2 special needs kids at home already so she said she would much prefer i went into hospital for the birth and the rest !! must say i think id rather that anyway

Babylovesmuffins · 17/07/2007 13:20

Hi Stefka. The Hypnobirthing classes do seem really expensive but we'd heard really good things about them. Ours is £275 for a couple for 12 hours spread across a month. We held off at first, as we felt we couldn't justify spending the money but so many people said it's well worth the money, so we decided to go for them. You learn relaxation techniques which you can apply in other life-situations, so it's not just for childbirth!

You can also buy a set of CD's - I bought Natal Hypnotherapy CD's for £50 - which are good for relaxation but they're different from the Hypnobirthing course and nowhere near as good as going to the actual classes.

BTW I'm not an "Earth Mother" type or anything - I just find the yoga etc helps me relax from what would otherwise be a stressful job

Stefka · 17/07/2007 15:43

Those classes sound great! I did get a CD but I keep falling asleep when I listen to it! I just lost my job though so I don't think we can afford it

MrsMcJnr · 17/07/2007 15:48

Sorry to hear that Stefka, must be a worry
