Hi everyone.

Glad to hear about your lovely Dad MIAM. And Doobeydo - what exciting and lovely news about the wedding.

Not much to report here really - just checking in! Lovely weekend with friends here on Sat and then kids party and harvest festival with DD on Sun. Finally after last week's spectacular vomitting, have now have 3 days on the trot of feeling good . Just sitting here fantasising about pasties though - mmmmmmm.

15+2

CornflakeKid · 17/10/2006 10:28

I have had a craving for mexican food for weeks now so have finally braved sainsburys and have bought a burrito pack, so nice organic chicken and guacamole - just waiting for ds2 to finish playgroup so can cook lunch....yummy yummy

My dh is originally from Plymouth and is a big pasty fan - loves them - I have to be in right mood for them - has to be cold outside and need a nice bench to sit on! In devon next week for half term - so will no doubt be much pasty eating...in fact an ideal tummy filler for a pg lady!

Have another hour of peace left so off to watch daytime tv and have nic cup of tea/chocolate!

CaptainDippy · 17/10/2006 10:28

Flippin' heck - I go for one evening out and look what I miss!!!!!?

Oh MIAM, I am so so so so so sorry to hear about the company you were saving with going bust. I would be in an absolute state, you poor thing. So so sweet of your dad to offer the money - don't be proud honey - I expect it would make him really, really happy to give it to you. Like you said yourself - he has recognised how good and sensible you were saving up for Christmas and he just wants to make things ok cos it ain't fair!!!!! [hugs] to you honey. I certainly wouldn't have had any problems with putting a tenner towards a wee fund for you - lovely suggestion Geordie!!

We are just so darn lovely, ain't we!!!?

Had to LOL @ your "squiffy glasses" runnyhabbit, poor thing - DC's just fiddle with EVERYTHING don't they - makes me so sometimes, but when you see their sweet little faces with that "Uh Oh!" look, you just melt.... Bless! When you are driving along the M25 with your "Squiffy Glasses" look out for me, I'll be the one stood on the hard shoulder with two children under 3 in sleeping bags FREEZING MY ARSE OFF!!

Car's gone in for repairs today, so will hopefully be back by the w/e as DH and I are going away. Doesn't matter if it isn't though cos the garage have kindly lent us a car for the time being. It is an absolute shitheap, but it does the job - AND it has remote locking, which is halarious!! Everyone hears the pips of remote locking and looks round for the swanky wagon and sees our poor little shitheap blinking away ...... Hee! Hee!

Ooooooh yes, DH and I ACTUALLY WENT OUT last night. We went to an NCT Quiz night (that I had helped organised) It was lots of fun and we ate lots of yummy pizza and breads and things from their new menu. We raised £300 for the charity and DH and I won TWO of the prizes!!! We won a facial (for me, of course! ) and a lovely gift wrapped bottle of wine (that can go in the "Christmas presents" box - Hee! Hee! ) So a lovely evening. Just written the Press Release and sent it off to local newspapers, feeling vauguely organised today!!!?

Poor little DD1 - we've worked out what is wrong with her - saw wax all round her ear this morning, gave it a little clean with a cotton bud and loads of pus poured down her face!!!!! Perforated eardrum, poor wee mite. She seems ok in herself and wanted to go to nursery, so we've made a drs appointment for later this a/n so we can all go together. Hope they can sort it. Bless her cotton socks!!

Gosh - long post - need to go and get dressed - made Bramshott's mug yesterday and painting it this morning ....... so should be with you sooooooon honey!!

CaptainDippy · 17/10/2006 10:29

Runnyhabitt - Dorothy Perkins seem to have al ot of those type of shoes cheaply and so do topshop and those sort of places!!

runnyhabbit · 17/10/2006 10:41

Thank you all for shoe suggestions - guess what I'm going to be doing this afternoon

geordiemacminx · 17/10/2006 10:49

I've got my booking in appointment with the midwife tomorrow. Would really like it to be a positive experience and not just sit their like a dummy. Anyone got any suggestions of questions to ask.. as this is my first I dont really know, but then I know as soon as I get home there will be loads of things I should have asked.

Runnyhabit - my pg shoes are hush puppies or campers - expensive normally but have a look on ebay for some bargains. I don't do heels normally - do have some low kitten heel shoes for work which seem okay at the moment - but is coming into sock season - so unlikely to be seen again for some time - have put away all my normal 'bottoms' in the loft as have to wear maternity or stretchy now! Its long warm boots and sunggly socks now til spring is here - or my campers which also love.

muminamini · 17/10/2006 10:56

Hi GMcM

You could ask about parenting classes - if they do them, when they start and how to book?
Also do they do any tours of the labour and delivery suite at the hospital?
As for questions about your pregnancy...I am sure they wil cover just about everything but make sure they give you contact numbers of who you can call should you need any advice at any time of day or night.
x

Bramshott · 17/10/2006 10:57

GMM - I wish now I'd asked at mine about NHS ante-natal classes: what's available, where, and at what point. I'm now wondering whether to sign up for NCT classes, but I'd really like to know what's available for free .

Bramshott · 17/10/2006 10:58

Ooh snap / crossed posts MIAM!!

CornflakeKid · 17/10/2006 11:01

Geordie - would think about asking her

a) who will be responsible for your care e.g. midwives/doctor or consultant
b) your 20 week scan
c) do you have a choice of hospitals/homebirths
d) what antenatal classes are available
e) how regular your appointments will be
f) things about baby - like heartbeat/movement/growth/height of fundus
g) your blood/urine tests
h) how you feel

I would leave the labour bit for a while - read up on it first so you can ask specific questions - your birth plan should be in your notes and midwife will go through that with you later in pg. There is a checklist of things on mine that they like to talk about at each appointment too.

With first time mums midwives seem to be pretty good - they should have your notes and the pregnancy book for you which has loads of info in.

Good luck - hope it goes well - make sure you come away happy with the inf you have received - if not - ask more questions - they should put aside about an hour for your booking in to cover stuff properly.

CaptainDippy · 17/10/2006 11:11

I know I am biased, but the NCT classes here are very very good and worth the money - would warn you - ours book up quickly, so I would get your name down now if you would like to do them!! Think Cornflake's list is fairly comprehensive - ask anything you like, they won't mind .... and you can always call them if you forget anything vital!

duchesse · 17/10/2006 11:18

Morning all! I was away in London all day yesterday with daughter's class, and sadly have no time to catch up with with this ever-expanding thread- hope everyone is bearing up with their cltch, savings disasters, etc... (orry to hear about those)

I have to go to the dentist now to have my unreliable veneer (front, very obvious, tooth) glued back, followed by ultrasound, tests etc this afternoon. Yes, I am nervous.

geordiemacminx · 17/10/2006 11:19

Thanks so so much guys... I just want to do everything right!!! Have written myself a little list!!!!

Ok, while we're on the subject of classes (and before I really do get off Mumsnet for this morning!), I need some advice:

With DD 4 years ago I signed up for the NCT classes, but then she arrived before the first one so I never went. I did go to a couple of hospital classes run by a physio, but DH didn't go to anything.

This time I feel that I need to go to something, but not sure what, and of course when, as I don't want to sign up for something and then miss it again in case of an early delivery. I asked our NCT if they do refresher courses but they don't. Now I know I need to find out what their whole course consists of, and what's on offer from the NHS, and I will do. I don't have family nearby so it will be difficult to get a babysitter for DD for lots of classes, and then I also have to argue with DH who thinks "well we've done it once, we don't need any classes". BUT last time lasted about 1.5 hours, with a 4lb-er and I don't feel I would be adequately prepared for a long labour with a larger baby.

Sorry, that's long and ranty, but what would you do? Are any of you second or third timers planning to attend classes?

doghouse · 17/10/2006 12:03

CD - sorry about your run of bad luck; hopefully the clutch is the last of it.
MIAM - so sorry to hear too about that company and your Christmas money. As someone has already said, it seems crazy that there isn't more that can be done. .

On the subject of MILs - I have to say I am one of the lucky ones. Have no complaints whatsoever, she and FIL couldn't be more lovely. However, at your lovely Dad MIAM - I don't have one of those - well, have Dad but he is far from lovely; haven't spoken in almost 20 yrs.

Is anyone else struggling on what they fancy to eat? I just can't get enthusiastic about anythign at the moment and keep resorting to a bowl of cereal!

Had midwife appt this morning for my bloods and managed to persuade her to listen for heart beat! LO beating away frantically ... at least I can relax now for oooh, at least a couple of hours!!

16 weeks today

Greengirlforever · 17/10/2006 13:19

Bramshott - I would absolutely see if you can get onto an NCT course (altho I know they're bloody expensive.... ). I did for DS2 because it had been 10+ years since my last and was DH's first baby. I found it fantastic and also made a very good friend. Also lots of good discussion about labour. NCT definitely supports low intervention IMO but with the right teacher are totally informative about all possible permutations of labour. Worked for me - DS1 had ended up being epidural, forceps etc. etc and DS2 was born at home in water !

I did investigate the NHS classes at the time but found my fellow attendees so unappealing (and sooooo uninformed!!) that I didn't turn up the following week !

geordiemacminx · 17/10/2006 13:36

My local branch doesnt appear to have any courses... the branch on the other side of Glasgow does but not until the end of March.... bugger that - I'll be ready to burst by then

OP posts:
CornflakeKid · 17/10/2006 16:12

Why not see if there are any antenatal pilates/yoga classes - they tend to have a discussion bit tagged on to chat about birth etc.

Ask your midwife about NHS classes - they do tend to do some courses for free - it can also include a tour of your labour unit.

I have solved my tights crisis - accessorize do nice knee highs in a variety of knits/colours - and as none of my skirts go about my knee or even close then will look 100% better than ankle socks when take boots off!

Hot dogs for tea - yummy!

geordiemacminx · 17/10/2006 16:17

Will mention it to midwife tomorrow. As I dont know many people up here am keen to meet other women in the same situation.

Urghhhh no talk of food today please... had a really bad day yesterday, ended up comming home from work, sitting on a step in the garden in my bra and knickers being sick into a carrier bag.. even the cat looked disgusted in me!!!

geordie - i have booked in for the glasgow nct classes for the beg of feb?? maybe they have told u different info?? i think on the other scottish thread i mentionned about the hypnobirthing group i have asked about - u mentionned it as well. maybe we could be buddies together for one or both??? i am like u babe - i know no other pg women in "real" life!!

emmymummy · 17/10/2006 17:39

Hello all, haven't posted since Friday and this thread has grown & grown.

CD so glad your scan went well - relief finally that everything's OK on that front, but nightmare about the clutch. It's horrid & scarey when something like that happens on the motorway. We got knocked off the M25 by a lorry 3 years ago and were all very very lucky to walk away. Car was a write-off and still waiting for the injury compensation to come through .

And talking of , poor you MIAM - I heard about the Christmas club fund going bust on the TV this morning. So sweet of your dad to come to the rescue though - what a lovely man he sounds.

My PILs are very nice, and help us out with babysitting loads - they have always wanted to play a very active role in the raising of their grandkids, so they are very hands-on and we really appreciate them. MIL can be a bit moody sometimes, but then DH can be like it sometimes so I guess its just a family trait!

Have just scoffed a tin of spagetti hoops, apple pie & custard and it's not even my dinner time yet, ooops. Am just hungreeeee and still feeling very sick. Very bored of it all, tummy is growing (flab not baby) and have zero energy. Will be as fat as a house soon. Have got to get motivated as am going away on a 2 day course tomorrow and need to find some smart clothes that fit, iron them and pack. Will also have to break the news to my closest colleagues on the course that I am actually pregnant and haven't in fact just been stuffing my face, hence the large tum. There's a lovely swimming pool at the course venue and am wondering if I can still squeeze into my slinky Speedo, or will it just burst like a sausage skin.....

claricebean · 17/10/2006 18:03

Hello all, so many messages it's impossible to keep up. Kids are having tea so a few minutes on here before bedtime starts (we're an hour ahead here...I don't have them in bed by six thirty! although it's tempting).

FWIW I had a really good experience with NHS classes for both DDs in the UK. I met some good, local friends in both and found the info very relevant as it was based on what would happen at my hospital.

Having said that, I didn't go to NCT classes, so don't have a comparison. However, some women I met in the NHS ones did do both and they said that the NHS ones were more factual, info based and the NCT ones were more about feelings and worries etc.

Also the NCT ones pulled from a much larger area (I was in SW London) so people weren't that local for meet ups after the babies were born, whereas with the NHS ones, we were all within walking distance.

Well it is raining here for the first time since..umm... May, I think. So I feel quite nostalgic about the UK today. DD1 (aged 6) thinks it's freezing. Actually it's about 20 degrees. She has a very short memory!! It makes me want to cook stews and pies and steamed puddings (the darkness and rain, not the temperature).

Hope you're all feeling ok. My MS seems to be back but I think it's because I'm so tired today. 15 + 6 days.

duchesse · 17/10/2006 19:01

I'm afraid, ladies, that you get to go on without me in this adventure. The scan this afternoon revealed that Vlad died last week, measuring 12 weeks 3 days (I suspect Friday, when the flutterings stopped).

There seems to have been something very wrong with him/ her, judging by the amount of fluid around the skull. Also there was a large new haematoma near the placenta.

I'm going in for a D&C tomorrow afternoon.

So good luck- I hope you all get the births you want, and your spring babies are all lovely.
