I'm wide awake again.. Horrendous acid reflux/vomiting from eating a hot curry last night to try and temp baby out. It burned so bad... Just don't do the curry thing if you get reflux!!!

Due a sweep today. MWs will come to my house to do it, which I'm not keen on personally, and they can't give me a time as they don't know where they will be... Like waiting for a parcel! Hopefully it will kick things off, but I'm scared it will be painful, smears have always been agony in the past, to the point where I got shouted at by one nurse and prescribed Valium by a GP. Apparently I have a recessive cervix so it's hard to get to it Sad

Anyone had experience with sweeps? Did they hurt, were they successful?

holls2000 · 09/09/2014 05:22

coolcat a friend had a sweep and it did the job for her. good luck - and hope you don't have to wait too long.

am wide awake. had a panic yesterday as clearly did too much and so didn't feel as many movements as usual. then at about 9.30pm went to the loo and (tmi) caught my perineum on a sharp edge (!) of loo roll so made myself bleed. sight of blood nearly had me in hysterics. however rang triage, stuck a pad in and nothing there 30 mins later. woke up at 4 with my babies head sticking out at the top of my tummy (breech) and gave it a rub and then followed a good 10 mins of action! now it has clearly gone back to sleep and I am ready (ish) for the day ahead. section in 9 days and I think I am ready to have it now!

felt v odd being on mat leave yesterday. I felt like a naughty kid not being at work!!!

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 09/09/2014 07:15

Coolcat, a sweep is what set off my labour last time and I've got one today so fingers crossed for us both. Don't be too disappointed if not though. You have to be 'ready' for it to work and there's no way of knowing when that will be.
I won't lie, mine did hurt quite a lot but it was quick and I did manage to breathe through it.

Topsyloulou · 09/09/2014 07:34

I've got a sweep booked today too. Not convinced she'll do it as I don't think he us anywhere near ready to come out but could be wrong. Have resigned myself to him being two weeks late although the combination of the sweep & a full moon tonight could trigger something off.

DizzyKipper · 09/09/2014 07:51

Thanks for the advice Coolcat, I shall make sure to avoid hot curries as I get reflux badly enough anyway. I had sweeps whilst I was actually in labour - it was taking ages and I was desperate to speed it up. No idea how much use they were and it did nip a bit. I'm getting desperate enough to consider having a sweep pre-labour to try and kick start it - I figure it's still better than all the pain that pregnancy brings.

Every night now when I go to bed I'm in lot of pain, but nothing comes of it. I figure it must be the weight and position of baby putting pressure on joints and nerves, but it's really ruining my sleep. I feel so cranky today, please come out soon baby!

zanashar · 09/09/2014 08:16

Morning!
Got my sweep booked on for fri 19th. Anyone who's had one previously, can you say if it's okay to go myself? Haven't got anyone to take me, planning on driving myself there & back. Would prefer if it decides to turn up before then but doubting it, this bump isn't going anywhere just yet.

Had my first reflux free night in over a week by completely avoiding any spicy food for my evening. Made the world of difference! Still didn't sleep well though, achy pelvis making turning in bed a military effort with all the pillows involved.
Sad

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 09/09/2014 08:37

Zana, totally fine I'd say. I walked to mine (20 mins uphill) and back and was fine.

ilovemonstersinc · 09/09/2014 08:49

kate middleton is pregnant Grin
for those who domt follow the news anymore like me (saw it on mn then googled)

DizzyKipper · 09/09/2014 08:53

Oh God, please excuse my extreme whinginess but I just had to say: Baby get out, get out, get out, get out, and then get out some more! Please! I can barely move without sharp shooting pains, every night when I try to sleep I'm in pain, I can't do stuff, I just want it to be over. Get out, please. Sad

KitKat1985 · 09/09/2014 09:44

Hmm, 38+6 today. Am hoping the full moon effect works for me today. As a back-up I'm going walking and I'm cooking a curry tonight (and trying to encourage DH to ahem, 'assist' with the cause later). Am just really uncomfortable now. I know it'll be hard when baby is here too, but at least it'll feel a bit more productive, and DH can help a bit and give me the odd brief break. This waiting is driving me mad! Also with baby being on the 80th centile for size I really would like her out a few days early rather than try to give birth to a giant baby. Someone on here the other day said (I can't remember who sorry) that they believe 'nesting' is about women being bored waiting for baby to arrive more than anything else, and I couldn't agree more. House has never been so clean (it won't last)! Grin

DizzyKipper · 09/09/2014 09:53

I only got nesting with DD when I was in labour - must've been 24-30hrs into it with no sleep and extremely painful contractions and I was suddenly gripped by this intense need to clean the fire place/mantelpiece. I managed to resist as I didn't want to look crazy (it would have involved going and getting a tooth brush and really scrubbing away). That was nesting. All the cleaning I've been doing prior to this baby emerging is just doing things that need to be done, though not today - I'm having a day off so I can sulk more effectively, though it probably would be more helpful if I got up and did stuff!

DizzyKipper · 09/09/2014 09:57

And I really wish people would stop texting me every fucking day asking whether I'm in labour yet! Arghhhhhhhhhh!

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 09/09/2014 10:04

Sorry, just need someone to cry to.
Just back from my sweep and it was a total waste of time. No dilation, firm and posterior cervix. Said babys heads not even engaged properly.
Feel so despondent about it all now. This is dc2 and I really hoped my body would know what it was doing but it's not even started.
Feel so upset Sad

lilone1234 · 09/09/2014 10:23

showme Sorry you didn't get the news you wanted! I also had sweep this morning (not as bad as I thought for those concerned) and cervix is closed and posterior so no progress for me either! It's so frustrating I know. Hopefully the sweep will make a start for us both though!

dizzy People texting all the time - yes this is SO ANNOYING!

velvet I believe that bath and sex is fine if you are losing plug as it can happen for weeks before birth but not once waters have broken.

CoolCat2014 · 09/09/2014 10:24

ShowMe - did they do a sweep? How far along are you now? I totally understand the feeling despondent - I've really struggled the whole of last week. Keep telling yourself it's not long now even if baby doesn't come today!

I'm sitting here waiting to be given an appointment time. Grr.

Yep, the worst thing is the person texting can't be trusted not to turn up mid-labour and as we're having a home birth it means it'll be easier for her to just walk in. I'm worried that she'll assume we're in labour if we don't respond to the texts and might come over, so I've now realised that to prevent that either myself or DH will have to be answering her texts during labour! I feel stressed already! I really wish she'd leave me alone.

misog2000 · 09/09/2014 11:08

My husband has been told he is to tell no one when I go into labour (except my best friend as she will have to look after my horse for me for a few days) as my worst nightmare is either set of parents turning up on the doorstep during labour or soon after baby arrives (I'm planning a home birth). This will have to change if I have to go in as my mum will have to go round and inject my cat (she's diabetic) twice a day while we are away, but fingers crossed it won't come to that.

I'm only on my second day of maternity leave and I'm a bit bored already, used to a full on busy role at work so pottering round the house is a massive change. I could go and potter around at the stables instead but I'd rather wait till everyone else gets home from work and do that later so I have humans to talk to not just horses Smile

I'm only 37+5 tonight so not holding out much hope for the full moon this time around, other than a bit of coccyx and hip pain I'm not finding walking etc too bad so thinking baby is not very engaged yet (2/5 at 36 weeks and I don't think anything has changed) the thought of up to 4 more weeks of being pregnant isn't filling me with joy though - keeping my fingers crossed something starts to happen soonish

CoolCat2014 · 09/09/2014 11:10

Lilone - thanks!

Midwife couldn't do the sweep as her fingers aren't long enough Blush told me lots of sex. Another will try on Thursday, and if baby doesn't make an appearance I'll be booked in for induction on Monday. Really don't want an induction, but nice to feel like I've got a final date that is less than a week away!

AlwaysandForever09 · 09/09/2014 11:20

Morning everyone, sorry some of you are feeling disappointed after the sweep, I've gotta wait until 18th for the midwife to attempt one for me, I'll be a week overdue exactly then so I'm really hoping something happens before then as I've had enough now! Baby still feels quite high up whereas as few weeks ago he was really low so no chance of him coming soon :( welcome to the newbies :) and congrats to those who've had their baby in the last couple of days that I've not congratulated :)

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 09/09/2014 12:31

Coolcat, sorry She couldn't do your sweep. What a PITA.
I remember being really upset when dd's due date came and went and nothing had happened.
I think I just feel so sad this time as it worked last time so I was just expecting something more this time.
She said to try sex and expressing.
I just want to get in bed and get out again when it's all over.

TeamEponine · 09/09/2014 12:55

Congrats to all of those who now have their babies for snuggling, and for those still awaiting their arrivals, fingers crossed that the full moon brings forward the next few babies.

I finished work yesterday - yay!!! I feel so much calmer now as I was really ready to finish work.

Baby is still breech, so I will be having the ELCS next week. It has taken me a while to come to terms with it, but I think I'm okay with it now. The main thing worrying me now is looking after baby properly whilst trying to recover from the op. I still can't quite shake the thought that I'm starting off not being able to do my best and that I'll somehow be letting baby down. Luckily DH is fab, and I'm starting to calm down about it. I've always been really independent, so I'm just going to have to let others help me and to accept that things don't have to be perfect, just good enough!

I really feel for all of you who are going over and struggling. Some days I'm not feeling too bad, but other days I just feel huge and uncomfortable. One thing that I am very grateful for the with ELCS is knowing that this isn't going to be dragging on for another three or four weeks!!!

CoolCat2014 · 09/09/2014 13:34

TBH I'm not that surprised she could do the sweep - TMI but nurses have always had a hard time doing smears on me and told me I have a recessive cervix, and she did have very short fingers Blush

eponine don't worry, you'll still be a fantastic mum and be able to do lots for your baby after c-section. My SIL had EMCS with her first, and said the main thing she struggled with was not being able to bath baby, but she was able to do most other stuff. You can get a baby bath on a stand if it helps though? Also make sure you check your car insurance - I think some companies the insurance won't be valid for a couple weeks so you might not be able to drive. PITA but I empathise with that one - I've not had my own car for a few months now, and I hate the loss of independence!

TeamEponine · 09/09/2014 13:36

This is probably a really stupid question, but can anyone explain what a Braxton Hicks contraction feels like? I don't think I've had any yet! Sometimes my bump feels really tight, a bit like my skin could just rip open, but that is only on the top of my bump (around her head and feet), and the rest of my bump is still soft, so I think that is just her stretching out.

Topsyloulou · 09/09/2014 14:01

No sweep for me today either. Saw a different midwife to the one who booked me in & she won't do the sweep until I'm exactly 40 weeks so booked in again for Friday which is my due date. He is also 4/5 palpable so even if I was 40 weeks they wouldn't have done it. Thought my bump had got higher again & as he was 3/5 at my last appointment he definitely has. Am resigned to him being 2 weeks late now, just going to book lots of things in to fill the next 15 days until he arrives!
