Thanks Pomme and Stacks Smile

Well... where to start?! I was booked to be induced on Friday at 40+13 as dd had no signs of making an appearance on her own! Even though I was there when my midwife booked my induction, they had no record for me at the hospital and I had to wait for a phone call back to see if they could fit me in. Thankfully they could, so told me to get in for 9am. I had to wait around until 2pm for the pessary as they needed to contact the MLU for my hospital notes.

Pessary was fine, and I was monitored until 4pm, at which point I was allowed home for 6 hours. At about 8/9pm I started to get regular back pain and thought it could be contractions starting so DH timed them and they were every 3-4 minutes lasting 40ish seconds. So returned to hospital at 10pm as planned and checks were done. We mentioned the back pains but the midwife didn't seem overly concerned and sent me home as planned, telling me to return at 2pm the following day.

We got home and contractions were strong and close together. I used a tens machine - I don't know if it helped, but at least it felt like I was doing something. I was getting concerned as the hospital is around a 25-30 minute drive away and so I felt I needed to be back there. DH called the hospital and they agreed I could go in, and go straight to the delivery ward.

Was examined when I got there and was told I was only 2cms dilated and wasn't in labour yet. They said what I was feeling was just the effects of the pessary. I was so disappointed I wasn't further along than I felt, and was worried about how much worse it would feel later on! I was still shown to a room though, and could use the ball/bed/bath. I had a bath at about 3am but DH forced me to get out after a little while as I kept falling asleep and DH said it was too cold as I kept shivering (I think I was shivering through nerves/stress/shock though).

At around 4am I asked for gas and air as I felt I couldn't cope, but the midwife said as I wasn't in labour I couldn't have it yet, and could go home if I wanted. I refused to go home and she said I'd need to go back onto the anti natal ward which I really didn't want to do, as I didn't fancy sharing a room with 3 others and feeling in so much pain. I suggested to the midwife that maybe I was further along than they had initially thought/had progressed quickly, but she wouldn't examine me as I had only been examined a couple of hours before so she suggested I have pethadine so I could return to the ward and try and sleep. I hadn't wanted pethadine after being told about it in NCT classes, but agreed, so was given pethadine and anti sickness at around 5am. I was shown back to the ward, stopping to vomit into a sink and block it Blush, and slept for around an hour. DH was sent home to rest too.

When I woke up I realised my waters had broken so was examined at 6:30am and told I was 9cm dilated! I was so happy! I rang DH to come back and meanwhile was taken back to a delivery room and allowed gas and air. Everything is kind of a blur from then. DH returned and was pleased to see I was in much brighter spirits than when he'd left me! I was talking with him quite happily between contractions. The contractions were so much more managable than what I'd been feeling when I had returned to the hospital in the early hours of the morning.

I got to the stage where the midwife said I should start pushing. I wasn't keen to lay on my back, so she had me trying kneeling on the bed, laid on my side with 1 leg in a stirrup, laid on my back, and laid on my back with both legs in stirrups! My contractions started slowing down to every 5 minutes or so, so the midwife gave me a drip to get them going again. Due to the slow contractions I ended up pushing for over 2 hours, but finally DD was born at 12:20pm, weighing 7lbs 13oz Smile She was perfect Smile

I had a 2nd degree tear so was stitched up, and I fed DD. I was warned I may need to stay in for a night as I was still losing too much blood, but in the end the midwife was happy and I was discharged. We got home at 8pm on Saturday, and so far things are going really well Smile

So sorry for such a long post!! But I wanted to get it all down while I still remembered, and thought it'll be nice for me to look back on Smile

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/08/2014 13:02

How lovely, Fox! Congratulations! Well done you.

Stacks · 11/08/2014 15:20

Lovely Fox. I don't get this refusal they have to examine people, I progressed silly quick, and had a baby 40 minutes after being only 4cm. You think they'd know it's possible?? Anyway (that's becoming a bugbear of mine!) so glad you had a reasonably straight forward induction and birth. Sorry about the tear though. There's a few midwives here who are trained to make/teach you to make lavender pads for the stitches - basically water and lavender essential oil, soak a sanitary towel in it, then stick it in the fridge/freezer. Take out when cold and apply as needed - just stick it on top of a clean pad. It feels great for the bruising, especially if you've still got the hot weather.

Stacks · 11/08/2014 15:22

How are you doing too? Managing with 2 DC? I'm home alone today with both, after having family staying for the week. So far it's been a good day, I just hope they continue! E has a routine now of sleeping 3-4 hours in the sling every morning and afternoon, so apart from some backache and inability to sit (she wakes up if I do), it works really well with T. E wakes up for all of T's nap though, and lunch and dinner!

pommedeterre · 11/08/2014 19:25

Oo fox some of that reminds me of my induction with dd1 - my body reacted badly to the pessary too and I too was given diamorphine and told to sleep for a bit. I did lots of vomiting (and poor dh only had one vomit tray).

I think it's more hardcore than the drip for sure!

Sounds like the actual delivery was fine though. How was your dh at the end of it all?

I do love a good birth story!

Fox28 · 12/08/2014 04:32

Thanks Too!

Thank you for the info on the lavender pads stacks. That sounds really soothing. I don't feel too uncomfortable yet, but will definitely give that a try if/when I do. Sounds like you're coping so well with the 2 dc's with different needs/patterns.

Glad it wasn't just me that found it difficult pomme. Yes I felt the pushing stage and delivery weren't too bad at all in comparison. I think DH might be a little traumatised after it all but he'll be ok. He found it really hard having to stay awake for so long too, and says he feels selfish for wishing at the time that he could just sleep. It must be stressful for the DHs/DP's though seeing us upset and in pain and unable to help

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/08/2014 15:59

Stacks, I haven't had to look after them both alone yet! M is still in nursery 3 days a week, so right now I'm home alone with R. DH worked from home on Friday so although I was technically looking after them alone, in reality we all spent a lot of time interrupting him.

Nuts, DS is waking up. Back soon!

cartoontrickster · 14/08/2014 17:57

hi ladies, since its been so quiet on the brooking threads lately and a lot of the mummys hang out over on ttc now anyway. nobody seems to use the postnatal thread.we have made a brand new thread for all brookers u will find it on conception. hoping to attract some newbies too.

pommedeterre · 14/08/2014 18:58

My dh was a total wreck after dd1 fox - he summoned my mum from two hours away to look after me whilst he went home to recover. Post dd2 he kept moaning about a headache the big twonk. He's under strict instructions to get it right this time - snacks and aspirin and water all ready for him to use as needed!

My dad found some old photos of me on some French and Italian farms in my early twenties and sent them through. My pre children waist! And I bet I spent a lot of time worrying about my thighs. I am so getting properly back into shape post birth this time quite quickly.

Only 2.5 weeks to go.... Seems like an age though still!

Glad to hear all going well with the babies everyone!

Fox28 · 14/08/2014 20:53

Haha that's so funny about your DH Pomme! Probably didn't seem too funny to you at the time though Smile Can't believe you only have 2.5 weeks to go! It'll fly by. I feel like DD has changed so much already and she's only 5 days old!! I don't want her to get older Sad

Thanks Trix - I'll take a look at the new thread now...

pommedeterre · 27/08/2014 10:53

Less than a week to go now! Can't quite believe that this time next week, all being well of course, I'll have three littlies. Now starting to wonder if I'll be able to manage them!

Hope all the little babies are doing well, feeding and sleeping is all good. How is everyone feeling?

iwasabrooker · 30/11/2014 14:00

It's very quiet here in Brooker land!

You must all be v busy with those little babies. :)

I had my brooking second baby in 2012 along with Too and Pomme and various others.

Now expecting another in June 2015, so thought I'd look you up.

I've name changed as I was feeling I'd had a lot of detail in my old name .

I've two boys and live a bit further north than Too if that narrows it down a bit...

Hope you are all getting on well!
