Fabulous news!

HungryHorace · 27/01/2014 16:56

Brilliant news. :-)

Come on Countdown!

mssleepyhead · 27/01/2014 17:13

Well done on all the amazing news today everyone! Scan is 3 weeks today for me. Can't believe I have to wait that long! You guys will be nearly at your twenty week ones by then!

Those whose sonographer gave hints about the gender - did you ask or did they just tell you? Don't want to ask just to be told I'm being daft and it's far too early.

lucyfluff · 27/01/2014 17:34

Great news dupain Smile

Mummytobeandsoanxious2014 · 27/01/2014 17:37

Hi everyone. Just felt strong enough to join, I'm 12 weeks and 5 days. I had my Harmony test and nuchal scan last week and I'm keeping everything crossed for the next few months. I'm 38 and this is my second baby (we have been told we are having a girl). My due date is 6th August but will have her earlier as will be a section. Nice meeting you all and congratulations on the positive scans

flymo79 · 27/01/2014 17:48

hi mumytobe, congrats and welcome!!
great news dupain! (every time I read your name I want some bread and cheese!)
and glad you found us antoinette!

Ruggle · 27/01/2014 17:52

Just had a look on the NCT website (what a headache it is to look at...so badly designed!) and discovered that my local course for August births costs £279 for 17.5 hours. Doesn't seem worth the money. I was just hoping to meet other mums-to-be in my area as I've only recently moved there and don't know a single soul!
Anyone know of meet-up groups for mums-to-be in North West London that aren't run at a massive fee?!

flymo79 · 27/01/2014 17:56

ruggle - i'd try other community websites, facebook, netmums, or just try putting a shout out to other nw london mums on the pregnancy board. A quick google comes up with loads. I reckon london is one of the better-connected places, I'm out in the sticks and feeling a bit like NCT might be my only option!

lucyfluff · 27/01/2014 18:05

Welcome mummytobe Smile

Ruggle - that seems an awful lot of money! when you start visiting the Health Visitor for baby weighing they will have info on local groups etc...have you any surestart centres near you? they are pretty good around here but I guess it depends on your area!

mssleepyhead · 27/01/2014 18:08

ruggle I'm in a similar position - my NCT fees came back as over £200 but I think I'm still going to pay it... My friends have all been made through work and live all over London. They're all still working too and few have kids. I know there are classes and groups I could join, but from what I've heard it can be harder to make friends outside of NCT groups, and I really do need to make some, I think. I'm prone to hermit like behaviour and unless I push myself I'll spend a year on my own with the little one otherwise! So I'm just going to pay it and see how it goes. It sounds like a lot but if we end up meeting once a week for a year after the birth, the cost per "meeting" goes down significantly. A gamble but it's the only way I can look at it.

mssleepyhead · 27/01/2014 18:08

Ps. I've just had to come home to finish working here purely so I could eat toast. Evening morning sickness is killing me!

Ruggle · 27/01/2014 18:30

All the NW London groups that I found on Google were disbanded years ago. I couldn't find anything current. There's supposed to be a mums and toddlers group in the church at the bottom of my road, but even that doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Bit of a moan....I don't drive and am reliant on either buses (which I hate) or a 15 min hike up a hill and down the other side to get to the nearest tube. Don't think I fancy that with a pram! Neither the tube nor the nearest train station has step-free access, so when the baby comes I am going to feel really isolated. Not sure I can afford a car, and even if I buy one I haven't driven for 10 years (literally when I passed my test) and wouldn't feel very confident driving around with a baby in the back.
The NCT group is on a direct bus route, so it's the handiest thing I could find, but the price really puts me off.

I am thinking that I will become a hermit during my maternity leave. It's a bit depressing! My OH doesn't seem concerned at all. He just said "join a group or something and meet other people that way"....but there are no groups near me....and it's not that bloomin' easy to meet people!

flymo79 · 27/01/2014 18:35

sorry ruggle - my bad. Perhaps if NCT is the handiest and will get you out and about it is the best option. All my friends in london who went to NCT found it invaluable and have seen all their friends for years afterwards. It really is that good. I suppose you can't put a price on those connections.
I'm still not decided for my area as rural so will have to travel whatever, but when you make friends it will all be more about going to each others' houses so I'm sure the travel part wouldn't matter for long.

Owlysims · 27/01/2014 18:41

Great news on the scans. Doesn't the children centre near you guys thinking about nct group provide free antenatal classes you could make friends at? Or go to a baby group Before baby comes people won't think you're weird they'll be nice to you I'm sure Smile

Ruggle · 27/01/2014 18:48

Hi Owly
I don't know of any children's centres in my area, but I shall investigate.

Owlysims · 27/01/2014 18:53

I would be very surprised if there wasn't a children centre in your area as they're everywhere! Ask your midwife they'll know!! Smile

mssleepyhead · 27/01/2014 19:04

On a side note, and because I just watched it and it freaked me out" have you guys seen this?? m.youtube.com/watch?v=wvziGJEPQjU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DwvziGJEPQjU

AntoinetteCosway · 27/01/2014 19:35

Ruggle does that cost include the NCT joining fee? From what I remember they sneak that on there but you don't actually have to join in order to do the classes, which are still pricy but worth it!

CountdownBegins · 27/01/2014 19:42

Hi everyone- so glad to hear great scan news hungry, Travis and DuPain!

Sorry Im just updating- have been doing the rounds telling people the good news :) A perfect baby at the scan on my side too! Baby was VERY wriggly and didn't like its photo being taken at all! My nuchal measurement and blood put m at very low risk and everything else looking great- due date changed by one day to the 10th August so if anyone could update for me I would be very grateful.

Hope you are feeling better Flymo?

OveranxiousUnderated · 27/01/2014 19:47

Yay, great news Countdown Grin x

Ruggle · 27/01/2014 19:49

Antoinette, no, it doesn't include the £40 joining fee. What annoyed me most is that you have to "register" for a class to find out the actual fee. Seems to be banded depending on area. I imagine London falls in the top band.
It's sad that my best friends who have babies or are having babies are in Ireland, up the north of England, or in New Zealand.
My sister is due in June but she's moving to goodness knows where on the outskirts of London, and anyhow we are sooooo not close.
My new neighbours have a daughter who seems to stay with them a lot and she has a baby so I might just knock on her door some day and invite her round. I might have to start my own meet-up group. We've got a big patio and garden so I can put it to good use in the summer!

HungryHorace · 27/01/2014 19:53

Excellent news Countdown. Baby HH was looping the loop too initially!
