You other mothers can't deny,
When a girl walks in with an ever expanding waist
And a round thing in your face
You....'d better give her some cake....

etc, etc,

New thread! Enjoy!

That's a really good point Eeyore - a lot of the early sucking is also to stimulate your supply to get ramped up. Plus the feeding fluctuates madly depending on whether they're going through a typical growth spurt or not.

misskatamari · 10/12/2013 20:23

Gosh lovesto - that sounds so horrible! I think you are so right about the attitudes you will encounter at the hospital. It seems crazy but I know a few people who at the first sign of any struggles with feeding etc they have been encouraged to give formula. It's ridiculous as we spend the whole of pregnancy being told how we should breast feed and persevere yet come in to contact with medical professionals with the "give up and give me some formula" attitude as soon as there is a problem. It just be so hard to say no in those situations too.

All very lovely advice and tips, thanks to everyone for taking the time to reassure me! Had a wobble when DH got home from work and he is 100% behind me and said he will support me however I need him to (including keeping family in check) so that's a relief. lovesto what an awful experience! Fingers crossed that doesn't happen this time around.

tiny that colleague sounds like a superhero! I can't imagine DH delivering a baby!

Can't quite believe that Christmas Eve is 2 weeks today - think the time is gonna fly by!

I know jazz I teared up when he told me, couldn't imagine my dh doing that either. In fact, I was trying to picture dh changing a nappy earlier and couldn't!

Just had a weird alien moment earlier. Heard another click from my belly and then a lump came out and travelled across my stomach Shock had a little scream

marzipanned · 10/12/2013 21:42

Thanks tiny. I wish I was on 2 week appointments! Next one in 4 weeks time, then 2 weeks after that. But DH has said we should book a growth scan if I'm worried...which I might well take him up on!

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 11/12/2013 06:41

Tiny I had the clicks with DS Grin it's fairly common but not sure what causes them. Weird when it happens!

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 11/12/2013 06:44

Lovestobake we had to wait all day for the paediatrician check too. So so frustrating when they do that!

Julietee · 11/12/2013 08:04

I don't think we get 2 week appts here - seems to all be a month apart unless you go over (Once again scowling at how my area does stuff).

Tiny That really made me laugh :D

Thingymajigs · 11/12/2013 08:06

I think I would be weirded out by clicking noises. Shock All that talk of bf last night kicked off my let down reflex for the first time in 7 years. It is so strange how that works. Just thinking about feeding can cause it to start.

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 11/12/2013 08:26

Grin That's just reminded me of a time when DS was tiny and I was getting dressed in the bedroom. DH asked me if we needed more milk (for his cereal) and I literally sprayed breast milk everywhere BlushBlush

The word was banned for weeks!

misskatamari · 11/12/2013 08:46

Lol Lastnight that's hilarious! DH has started calling me "leaky" as one of my boobs seems to leak on him most nights Confused

EeyoreIsh · 11/12/2013 09:03

lastnight that's hilarious!

sunflowered · 11/12/2013 09:08

misskat I'm not Leaky, I'm Snorey at the moment Grin - heavy cold isn't making me the most attractive person to share a bed with Blush

Thingymajigs · 11/12/2013 09:34

Haha lastnight, that's brilliant. Grin I can't remember any spraying incidents but I had lots of days where I'd looked down to see my top drenched in milk and then wondered how many people had seen that during the day. Looks like my washable breast pads turned up just in time. They are huge though. They fill up the whole bra.

marzipanned · 11/12/2013 09:41

Champs no milk here either, though I got a bit of clear fluid on the squeeze test. I'm not worried about it - the birth is (hopefully) a way off, and only small amounts of colostrum needed for first few days anyway, before main milk comes in.

Have booked another scan for this weekend. I hope this baby hasn't been subjected to too many scans...this will be number six Blush

misskatamari · 11/12/2013 09:51

Yeah I think mine is just a bit of colostrum. I'm leaky and drooly (that's two of the pregnancy dwarves covered!)

Julietee · 11/12/2013 10:18

Champagne I'm in Watford - cool if you're in the same area!

I've just had a look at my notes and it goes 28, 32, 36, 38, 40 - so only 2 weeks after 36 it looks like. Is it different for others? I've just had my 28 week.
Same as you I could book extras if I wanted I guess :)

marzipanned · 11/12/2013 10:42

Oh, those are same as mine Julietee (in Scotland). Then weekly if you go overdue.

The pregnancy dwarves:
Leaky
Drooly
Grumpy
Pukey
Achey
Wakey (at 3am)
Paranoidy
Horny (laura :) )

EeyoreIsh · 11/12/2013 10:43

Just been signed off by the doc for the next fortnight, which will mean no more work for me now. I should be really happy but actually I feel guilty and a bit adrift! I'll have to do lots today to finish everything off, but I feel bad leaving my team in limbo.

We get fortnightly appointments after 34 weeks, then weekly after 40.

The house is a total disaster area after two days of plastering, so at least I can make a start on tidying it up. The good news is the plasterers found (by accident) that there's a lintel already between two rooms we were thinking of knocking down, so it means it'll be much cheaper for us to do when we get around to it. I'm putting a moratorium on work for a few years once we've finished this stretch of work. I'm fed up of it, and we have no money left!

LovesToBake · 11/12/2013 10:48

Champs no leakage here either and I didn't ahead of the birth with DS and my problem was the opposite to your Mum's - I had oversupply! So I really wouldn't give it a moment's thought. Your body will leap into action triggered by labour to produce the colostrum and then about 3 days after the birth your milk usually comes in (in a BIG way - think Jordan boobs!) which is as a result of all that sucking that baby does in the first couple of days to stimulate production.

MissKat I'm with you on the drooling. It's ridiculous. I lie in bed trying to get to sleep and every now and again I have to wipe rivers of the stuff from the side of my face before they drench the pillow. Attractive!

Eeyorish, sorry to hear you're feeling in limbo but glad you've been signed off, it sounds like recent weeks have been exhausting and definitely not what a pregnant lady needs. There are no prizes for working right up to the finish line and everyone's different so hope you can try and relax (amid the house chaos) and let go of feeling guilty.

tinypolkadot · 11/12/2013 10:52

I had my 32 week appointment yesterday and she said I'm on 2 weeks from now on, so next one at 34 weeks and on Christmas Eve as well!

I've only had the one leaky boob instance, and have noticed a bit of dried whitish stuff on my nipple, so I'm assuming that's a bit of colostrum. How often are people wearing breast pads? Will we need to wear them in our sleep? I'm just wondering whether I need to buy sleeping bras for nursing or not.

Also would appreciate some bedding advice, this is what I have for the moses basket/pram, but is it enough?!?

4 flannel sheets
3 fitted moses basket sheets
2 cellular blankets
1 fleece blanket
2/3 other random gifted blankets

Is anybody getting a bumper for the cot bed/crib? I've read they are bad, but not sure I fully understand why...

Thanks for your clicky story lastnight, I've had another one a few minutes ago, it's really freaky. I've been googling (of course) and it could either be his bones clicking, fluid popping or thumb sucking!

marzipanned · 11/12/2013 10:57

tiny my friend told me not to get a cot bumper because if it comes undone it could smother baby or they could strangle themselves with it.

That said pretty much all my friends in the US put their newborns straight into cots with bumpers (funnily enough the advice over there is separate rooms from day one!)

Eeyore it sounds like you are definitely doing the right thing. Your team will cope, they will have to. You and baby are priority number one.

tinypolkadot · 11/12/2013 11:08

Thanks marzi think we'll hold off with the bumper then, I'm not complaining if it saves us money!

Eeyorish it's really good news that you've been signed off, I don't know how you've managed this far, I certainly couldn't have done your job. Relax and enjoy it, your team will cope.
