Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

DP and I both like the madame gogo baby carriers, some of them look pretty cool. Not suitable for newborns but I may get a more traditional sling for that. I am lazy and get all my food shopping delivered so shopping won't be a huge issue for me. Pram shopping with the family tonight though, not committing to one option.

Bit sad my parents don't like the boys name I picked... DP and I like the name Gideon. They have suggested Harvey or Rory as alternate names.

I don't think I could put up with a nanny but I wouldn't mind a house elf type thing to change the dirty nappies though...

MummyPig24 · 16/11/2013 17:07

Panto I know a little boy called Gideon. What does it matter if your family don't like it? He's your baby. Harvey is awful (huge apologies to those who like it) and we all know I love Rory! This is why I won't be telling anyone in RL names we like.

CookieMonster1971 · 16/11/2013 17:30

I like Gideon; it has a noble ring to it. I know a Harvey who hanged himself when he got out of prison

OwlinaTree · 16/11/2013 17:55

Hummm that was supposed to be

I'm planning to let my nanny carry me in response to cookie.

Has lost impact now!!

CookieMonster1971 · 16/11/2013 18:50

I got your drift, Owl Grin

Rockchick1984 · 16/11/2013 18:54

Panto I like Gideon, go for what you and DH want and sod anyone else, they don't get to name the baby if they weren't there when it was made :) I've got a Madam Googoo toddler size carrier, its so comfortable and pretty - and she's one of the cheapest for custom made carriers!

I seriously need to learn to count... Thought I'd put on nearly 2st which was worrying me a lot, but have just realised that I can't add up and its 16lbs not 26lbs that I've gained so I'm much happier sending DH to the chippy to celebrate

Pantomime · 16/11/2013 20:16

I do love Gideon as a name so I may just ignore them all :).

rockchick* I will be ordering one when I can work out which options to go for, I got an email back with all the extras so there is a lot to look through. Can you pick the fabric?

mummypig As much as I do love Rory it isn't going on my list. DP and I are doctor who fans and one of the assistants partners was called Rory. I would end up dressing him up as a little centurion :)

Pram shopping is a success I have finally picked a pram, I am going for a bugaboo bee. I feel so boring recently, I've not bought anything for the baby yet. Can any veteran mums give any advise on essentials for newborns? Feeling overwhelmed.

Rockchick1984 · 16/11/2013 20:21

Panto she usually has some stock fabrics that you can choose from (I did this) or you can buy some and send it to her / buy online and have it shipped directly to her - a friend did this to get a Dr Who carrier :) I got a sweat hood as figured I wouldn't be able to see where I was going if I got the pixie hood even though that was my favourite, and nice thick padded straps and waistband. Think it came to £90 including postage and exchange rate although this was a year or so ago.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 16/11/2013 21:10

Cookie, I wasn't meaning your comments which were obviously intended in a lighthearted way, I was meaning all the "ha ha what a ridiculous idea to use a sling all the time - that is so impractical and ill thought through I can't believe someone would suggest such an obviously stupid thing" type of comments.

Coolhand · 16/11/2013 21:26

So much to comment on as I haven't had time to be on here all week. I'll just comment on the most recent stuff and save you a gazillion cluster posts.

I really like Gideon - we have friends with one and he's a lovely boy. Rory was originally on our list as well but I think it might be a bit much with our surname (Reid).

On Car Seats, I don't think any need for 2 with the stage 0 car seat - you take it in and out of the car anyway. We did buy 2 as soon as we moved to the static car seats though.

On prams - seriously consider 2nd hand. I got my travel system from eBay and only used it until about 6 months - it was in fab condition when I bought it. Then bought a baby jogger city mini at £150 from Gumtree, brand new, with labels still on. In total, both added up to less than one brand new travel system. Bought the car seat brand new though.

Coolhand · 16/11/2013 21:36

I'm hoping to avoid a double buggy by the use of a sling/carrier. DS will be 2 and 3 months at birth, he's a great wee walker but a buggy can be useful for navigating shops etc. We'll see how it goes.

Have forgotten who was having the horrible morning with the tantrums/potty training. Hope calm has restored - at least you will have achieved the potty training before LO comes along! Unless I can manage it during the Christmas hols, I'll be doing it next summer with the baby around as well. The tantrums are sooooo hard though. Big hugs

Coolhand · 16/11/2013 21:38

Threads ago (around the time of home made fudge discussions) someone mentioned some lovely spiced Christmas cookies. Who was it and what is your recipe?

I want to try some out this Christmas!

CookieMonster1971 · 16/11/2013 21:54

Phew, BWP! I am so used to causing offence that I have begun to apologise for almost every comment I make. You are right, though, I do like to take light-hearted swipes at folk Wink

Pantomime · 16/11/2013 22:22

Rockchick
I may have to do some fabric shopping and find something DP and I like. I keep seeing pictures of the MGGs about and they do look rather cool. How do you find wearing one?

Is it true you can't take your baby out of hospital without a car seat? I don't have a car so it seems odd to have to get one just to leave the building. Planning on learning to drive post birth though.

liberuna · 16/11/2013 22:27

Oh cookie you should try and chill.

Im getting sling as baby is going to be attached to me for at least the first month. in best elmira voice Im going to love her and squeeze her! OH is getting carrier cause he thinks he'll look silly in sling. Pram is for when I venture out.

IceNoSlice · 16/11/2013 23:28

Panto how are you planning to get home from the hospital? Is it a walkable distance? Or train/bus? If so I don't think you'll need a car seat!! If you're getting a lift or a taxi then you will need one.

CookieMonster1971 · 17/11/2013 01:02

Liberuna, what makes you think I'm not chilled? Hmm

CookieMonster1971 · 17/11/2013 01:06

I'm not buying a car seat just to get home from th'ospickal; I'll have to borrow one from somewhere.

IceNoSlice · 17/11/2013 07:23

Perhaps the local children's centre could help find a baby car seat to borrow for the journey home? It must happen fairly often that folks without cars need to get home with a newborn.

Rockchick1984 · 17/11/2013 10:05

You don't need a car seat in a taxi (although its advisable) so could get a cab home, or send DH on the bus with baby in the pram while you get a lift from someone - no way could I have got a bus just after giving birth!!

Pantomime · 17/11/2013 10:39

I will be getting a lift with the FIL however I was kinda hoping the car seat would be in the car rather than with me. I don't want to be faffing about trying to fit the bloody thing when I just want to get home. Would walking out with the baby in your arms really be so bad?

Rockchick1984 · 17/11/2013 10:50

We just walked out with baby in arms (same as you, wasn't going to lug it around) and no one said anything... What are they going to do anyway, they can't stop you leaving!

PiratesMam · 17/11/2013 11:18

I've never been stopped just walking out carrying the child rather than having car seat right there, I would just get a cab as rock is right, the same car seat laws don't apply in a cab. In fact, even if you did have a car, a cab fare would be cheaper than the car park fees at our hospital!

Cool I can't remember if we have already discussed this but 2.3yrs is a good age to start buggy boarding, I think you can definitely avoid double buggy at that age. They are a right faff, but DS loved buggy boarding! And with the sling too you'll have no problem if DS1 falls asleep and needs the buggy.

liberuna · 17/11/2013 11:22

cookie you are so chilled that if you were a drink I wouldn't need to ask for extra ice. :)

CookieMonster1971 · 17/11/2013 12:45

I know what I'll do. I'll get a cab home from the hospital and my gay husband can mummify himself in swathes of baby sling material and walk home showing the world what a hip and modern father he is, while female passersby coo and swoon at his flipflops.
