joll we had a girl name that we both loved and included a family naming tradition in which makes it an even bigger 'ahhh'!

fox same, i feel like girls might have more options? maybe theres more girl names? for boys my name choices just keep going round and round!

boys i either like really popular names that i wouldn't use, or really uncommon ones that dp hates, but none so far that i think THAT'S THE ONE.

Rockchick1984 · 26/09/2013 15:32

Grey I think girl's names are easier, but there's more of them that I like so choosing DS's name we had a list of about 3/4 names; we already have about 10 girls names that we like and we only found out 2 days ago what we are having - will be harder to narrow them down :)

karamcleod · 26/09/2013 15:34

We've got a name for a boy and possibly one for a girl, including middle names. Choosing a name is stressful!

Jolleigh · 26/09/2013 15:36

I'm finding exactly the same...can you imagine little baby Bruce? And I'm not keen on any really common names other than Ben. But the biggest cunt of an ex I've ever had was called Ben and as I work in the same building as him still and people here are aware of that relationship, that would be a horrendous decision. (turns out he wasn't as 'separated' as he claimed to be...even manufactured an 'I should move in with you' proposal when his wife started suspecting he was playing away)

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 15:38

How about baby Alan? Grin

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 15:40

Hmm, you definitely can't have Ben then Jol. He sounds like a right wanker. It's probably best to avoid names of exes. Luckily for me I don't actually have any, so that leaves the field a bit more open.

commsgirl · 26/09/2013 15:41

I think girls names are so much harder! We've got a couple of boys names we love, but can't find any girls names!

karamcleod · 26/09/2013 15:44

We have an acidentally made up name for a girl but we both love it, no one else seems to like it :(

Rockchick1984 · 26/09/2013 15:45

Go on Kara you can't say that then not tell us...

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 15:46

I like names with a 'ph' sound in them. Like Joseph or Sophie. Think of some more for me!

rescoonetwothree · 26/09/2013 15:46

kara can you share the made up name? if not what do you mean made up?! I'm intrigued!!

joll yeah maybe not ben then! fox hahaha oh brilliant!

comms HOW.

karamcleod · 26/09/2013 15:50

Connor Michael Alexander Mcleod
Makella Norma-Jean Mcleod

Neither are sent in stone but there the only 2 we've actaully agreed on and we've been thinking of baby names since Dec 2011!

rescoonetwothree · 26/09/2013 15:51

i love 's' sounds in girls names! boys i love hard c's or k's

fox theres loads! for less common ones how about delphine, persephone, etc more common like phoebe, francesca, stephanie?

cant think of many boys with it in off the top of my head!

SuperMuddle · 26/09/2013 15:55

Sorry, rock! Pinky gets the best lines though...

Girls' names are so much easier; I could come with four or five very quickly, but struggle with boys' names. Part of it for me is that it's easier to find a not-too-popular-without-being-weird/pretentious girls' name, but a lot of boys' names are either in the top 100, which we want to avoid, or a bit too 'out there' for our tastes!

karamcleod · 26/09/2013 15:55

we haven't decided on spellings yet either so Makella might be Makellah, Makela, Mackellah, Mackela ect. I think you can kind of please yourself when you make it up can't you?

rescoonetwothree · 26/09/2013 15:59

super this is exactly where i am!

kara envious of the agreement, what i would give.....

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 15:59

No way could I only look outside the top 100. I mean, 100 is a lot of names. There's some pretty random ones towards the bottom. I'd rather it was outside the top 10 but I can't guarantee it. I think we're a bit too ordinary to pull anything too different off.

eln77 · 26/09/2013 16:00

i'm definitely going to have a nightmare with names... i'm pretty traditional (think William, Thomas, Oliver etc), whereas DH wants something a little more... well... radical! so far his favourites are Ecthelion (I have no idea how its spelt), which he saw on the titles for some dull as programme, and Denethor which sounds like something out of lord of the rings...

i'm beginning to think he hates our son!!!

weirdly he thinks girls should have a more traditional name and really likes Elizabeth and grace!

I'm really not sure where the logic is here! girls are so much easier than boys.

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 16:05

Hana is underrated. My niece is Hana and she is uber cute.

commsgirl · 26/09/2013 16:06

DP is just so picky but has absolutely no sensible suggestions and won't even entertain a name that he can't make a 'good nickname' out of it. I hate nicknames/shortenings despite using one myself. I'm not confident we'll ever be able to name a baby.

Grey I don't know! I just can't get inspired with girls names.

SuperMuddle · 26/09/2013 16:08

Good point, fox. Maybe I'll look more for names outside the top 70 or so. Just don't want DC to be one of three or four in his/her class!

eln, Denethor is one of the characters in lord of the rings! He's the one who rules Gondor in the absence of a king, and ends up committing suicide by fire when he thinks his son's dead. Maybe steer your dh away from that one...

Some of the female characters' names are beautiful though. I love Arwen, but simply wouldn't be brave enough.

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 16:09

comms you could go down the Dirty Dancing route and just call it Baby? Grin

commsgirl · 26/09/2013 16:10

Can't make a 'good nickname' out of that though can you Fox?!

JustCallMeBaldrick · 26/09/2013 16:12

I'm so glad we're in team pink, as we had no boys' names at all! Not that we have many girls' names, but at least we have some, even if none of them are 'the one'.

FoxMulder · 26/09/2013 16:12

I was always one of 2 in my class. It is a bit crap, but not a big deal. If you really loved something, I'd try not to let popularity put you off. Our local primary school here only has 3 classes so there's a good chance the sprog will be the only one no matter what we go for!
