Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Oddlife · 29/07/2013 10:29

legallyblond thanks for nursing clothes tip - I bought some nursing tops early thinking I can use them now and beyond and have already grown out of them - the song June is busting out all over comes to mind!

shirehobbit I am not having a flu vaccine - never had it before and even when my family got swine flu I was fine. As for the WC vaccine I too am still debating... I know it's controversial but I really don't like the idea of taking a vaccine with diphtheria, tetanus, polio and pertussis that has no clinical data to prove its efficacy and testing it out on my unborn child. I would rather wait until baby is born and then make sure I and my immediate family are all vaccinated. At least if baby gets it once born the medics have a tangible human being to treat.

I am checking my local health authority for WC cases every month to keep an idea of how bad it really is in the area. So far no cases this year. Definitely think it is a personal choice and that we each have to look at our specific risk factor - ie are there older sibling at school in areas of high risk etc. I know I have a few more weeks to change my mind but def not rushing into the decision until I feel I have all the info. hope that helps to know that others are also wrestling with the decision.

pinkbuttons · 29/07/2013 10:31

shire I have had the flu vaccine the past couple of yrs due to asthma, and have never had any symptoms from it other than a dead arm, agree with roxvox though is a bit of funny time of yr to do it.

Have just booked my whooping cough vaccine too. Is on Weds and its my birthday on Thursday so now wondering if I should change it. Did anyone else feel ill with it or was it just a sore arm afterwards?

Wickedgirl · 29/07/2013 10:31

sorry, try this link

Natalieand · 29/07/2013 10:48

Interesting about WC I asked dh yesterday if he thought I should have the jab and he looked at me like I was from another planet and when I asked why he said he didn't even no what whooping cough was lol. So I explained and then his advice was 'up to you' so very helpful so think I will discuss with midwife when I next see her.

I'm not intending to breastfed so nursing clothes aren't an issue to me.

Isit just me or does housework seem to take twice as long these days? Dh scrubbed the kitchen floor the other day as he said it was getting 'discusting' maybe I should leave the jobs I hate more often if he's gunna do them lol

claphammama · 29/07/2013 10:52

oddlife I'm also wrestling with the WC jab decision as I'm 28 weeks tomorrow but I'm 90% sure I'm not going to do it. I've been reading about it a lot and I don't like the idea of a combined vaccine. I would feel better about just pure WC vaccine. And, as you say, it's not at all tested so it's not proven that it's effective and it's not proven that it's not harmful. So I feel the same - don't want it to be tested on me and the baby in case, a year down the line, NHS will change their mind, as they often do. I had the same dilemma with the BCG vaccine 5 years ago when DS was born and they had outbreaks of TB and didn't do it as it was also controversial. Where do you live? How do I check the number of local outbreaks?

re: nursing clothes, agree with everyone - not worth buying. I had a couple of BF tops but never used them. I used BF bras and lived in cardigans for months. You undo a few buttons and job done!

glad the baby is measuring on dates warlin! did you go for a private scan? and I agree - I find that MWs and all the literature / newsletters we get scare are far too easily...

claphammama · 29/07/2013 10:54

and yay on your maternity leave wicked!!!! are you the first one on this thread to finish work?

emmoB13 · 29/07/2013 11:10

I had the whooping cough jab last week. I came to the decision that it doesn't pose any risk to the unborn baby but whooping cough really does and i would never forgive myself if they baby did contract whooping cough when i could have prevented it - i do understand why people are worried about it though. I had a sore arm for a day or two, was totally confused at first as didn't link the two and thought i'd hit it or something ha baby brain! I would say that i think babies movements became a little sluggish and sleeping for the 24 hours after. I could still feel movements but just not as strong. Got to the point of ringing the antenatal clinic but as i hung up he went crazy kicking and has been fine since. Not sure if there's a link there but that's been my only change in movements. I do think i did make the right decision for my peace of mind though. Not been offered the flu jab though.

I am a super lurker on here but just wanted to say that this thread helps me so much with hints and tips and what to buy/not bother buying. I'm considering co - sleeping if baby wont settle in his moses basket and wanted to ask how it works. What would you use to cover yourself and baby in the winter, can my partner stay in the bed? - if i do it i want to do it as safely as possible.

legallyblond · 29/07/2013 11:42

Re co sleeping - I brought DD into our bed when she wouldn't settle and will also do that with the twins. I had DD in a cot next to our bed from day 1 (one of the quite little IKEA ones and both twins will be in the same!). When I brought her into bed, we lay DH, then me (in about the middle) then DD on top of the covers with her own sleeping bag (in fact, we just used gro bad swaddled for the first couple of months), then the cot pulled right up against the bed to act as a bed rail. This was an adaption on the recommended safe co sleeping approach (in Sears and Sears or on their website - my bible!!) which is to use an actual bed rail, not just the cot pulled up flush to the bed...

TheFalconsmistress · 29/07/2013 11:48

Has anyone had the morning sickness back? I did today bile and everything, no preamble just vomited and did not stop till my tummy was inside out Sad

Sparkeleigh · 29/07/2013 11:50

Warlin did you have any problems getting parked at the Ulster when you went into labour last time? I've been dreaming about DH missing the birth, and he did nearly miss the first scan because of the queue for the car park... It was right before visiting time started and was a nightmare! Glad your growth scan went well, the measuring tape does seem to be a really stupid way to estimate size! I'm broad so I know my bump is wider but flatter than my cousins, who has a really slim frame...

I got a free CAD program over the weekend and measured all the rooms and furniture and did up a couple of plans so we've finally decided how we're going to organise the bedrooms, so relieved to have got it sorted and really looking forward to getting it all shifted about and in the right place.

Also, this might make me sound like an ungrateful cow and I don't mean to be, but my MIL smokes and everything coming from her house smells of smoke - my SIL is very kindly getting us a Moses basket and now I'm worried I won't be able to wash the smell of smoke off it. It comes in a box though so it should be fine. Someone give me a virtual slap and tell me to get a grip please...

wicked yay! So jealous Grin

Nat I think so, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm actually doing twice as much housework.. I've been going a bit crazy cleaning things and organising the hot press and stuff... I've found the good housekeeping section on here, DH thinks I've run mad.

Sparkeleigh · 29/07/2013 11:54

Oh, crosspost falcon -sorry to hear that Flowers I didn't get ms but I do have terrible heartburn/reflux and sometimes throw up a little from that, usually in the morning when I haven't eaten much so there isn't much to throw up...

Wickedgirl · 29/07/2013 11:54

Falcon...... Not sure if its morning sickness but I have been sick a couple of times. I thought it was due to heartburn though? Gaviscon makes it feel better

OrangeBlossom2 · 29/07/2013 12:07

Thanks for the link wicked, bookmarked it!

I too have had the flu jab the last few years due to asthma with no problems. They usually run a campaign and send me a reminder letter in October. I won't need to have it in pregnancy though. I would think you are unlikely to get flu before the baby is born as it isn't flu season.

I too am unsure about WC vaccine as baby has had no other drugs in pregnancy, no caffeine, paracetamol or anything and to suddenly hit it with four different things at once seems a lot for such a little person. Someone commented on the NHS website that their baby died shortly after the mother had the vaccine at 37 weeks. That might not have been what caused it and it is only one person but it scared me anyway, and a few people have mentioned that their baby stopped moving for a day or so after the injection which also makes me think it stuns it a bit. Also I worry about being the first few people to have it when it is untested on pregnant women and a few people have mentioned that their midwife a didn't advise it. I think I will go for the vaccine despite all this though as we have to hope that the nhs are recommending what is best for our babies... I am 28 weeks now so need to book it. Just not quite sure yet.

OrangeBlossom2 · 29/07/2013 12:08

Oh and I feel sick when I lay down flat even if a few hours after eating or if I eat too much. My guess is that my stomach is squashed up now the baby is taking up all the space. Not actually been sick though, poor you.

PseudoBadger · 29/07/2013 12:33

Falcon - dont panic I'm just checking due to personal experience....
Any headaches or visual disturbances? How has your BP been? Any pain in your abdomen?
Perhaps mention it if you have an appointment tomorrow after your scan?

TheFalconsmistress · 29/07/2013 12:34

Pseudo I am having all of that since yesterday should i worry?

TheFalconsmistress · 29/07/2013 12:34

bp has been normal xx

cazboldy · 29/07/2013 12:39

Hi all

hope you are all ok.

Haven't been on for days, and have no hope of catching up completely!

I have been very busy this morning and just bit the bullet and ordered pretty much everything else I need for me and the baby, and now feeling much happier.

Now I just need to sort and rearrange my room, decorate the bathroom and wash the baby clothes before the birth.

But as i am 30 wks today I am starting to feel quite prepared Smile

Had an enormous kick up the bum when a mum at school told me last week, that her sister who is due the same day as me had gone into early labour and was in hospital having drugs to try and stop labour so that they could jab her with steroids for the babys lungs Shock

It has stopped, but she has had to stay in as her waters had gone and they are monitering her for infection.
I can't imagine how scary that must be! On the plus side they did tell her baby's survival rate would be 95%

And also just how the hell would I cope if anything like that happened to me with all the dc I have already, and the horses etc......... Nightmare!!!

cazboldy · 29/07/2013 12:41

X post sorry you are feeling unwell/being sick Falcon and I see I am not the only one who has been busy preparing! Grin

PseudoBadger · 29/07/2013 12:42

Take care xx

PseudoBadger · 29/07/2013 12:56

Sorry to make a fuss but PE can come on very very quickly if it decides to. Every one of us should be aware of the symptoms as we enter the 3rd tri.
