Flyer I'm pretty certain they can't reduce/amend your pay if you've been given alternative duties due to pregnancy. Is that usual for your company?

claphammama · 04/07/2013 12:51

wow smitten - do you still report to your DH at work?? :-) How did it work out at the end? Amazing he left his gf after so many years and then things progressed so quickly with you - obviously you are the one! Grin

feminist another lovely story Grin

flyer this is a big chunk of your salary... and I must say I am very surprised that a company like yours doesn't pay more than just SMP... although I guess most of their staff are women of child bearing age so they are probably protecting themselves? I really thought they would pay better though...

So now I am not only unbrushed but also covered in beetroot juice as the canteen juicer attacked me... today is clearly not my day

PseudoBadger · 04/07/2013 12:57

There is a case (British Airways vs Moore & Botterill [2000]) that went to the Employment Appeal Tribunal. I will send you a link. Basically they should have been given the same terms and conditions including allowances OR have been suspended on full pay.

Yes pseudo it's normal for them. They are tax free and are in theory supposed to be used entirely for food etc whilst on company time so not classed as part of my salary, however my job the salary is pretty poor (for London) so most crew do have to bring home allowances in order to live. I hope no one on here works for hm customs and revenue otherwise I'm toast Shock I'm living on my basic salary plus a small ground placement allowance.
It's my own fault because I am spending like I was before I got pregnant. I just need to cut back and be realistic.
I really cannot slate them because they are a fantastic employer and after all these years I still love putting my uniform on and going to work it makes me feel very proud to work for them, I sound totally sad hey!Grin but I'm still skint haha...

PseudoBadger · 04/07/2013 13:02

Also taken from here

"Ms Moore and Ms Botterill both became pregnant during the course of their employment as pursers with British Airways. Under their terms and conditions of employment they could no longer be employed on flying duties after their 16th week of pregnancy. They therefore accepted alternative work in ground posts. Although their basic pay remained the same, they lost out on flying allowances.

They argued, successfully, that when suspended by reason of pregnancy, section 67(2) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 requires an employer to offer suitable alternative employment with terms and conditions no less favourable than those they would be entitled to under their normal work. The fact that some of the flying allowances represented expenses was not relevant. "We are quite satisfied that it was not necessary, for the purpose of determining liability, for the Tribunal to embark on a breakdown of the various allowances...It is enough...that taken as a whole a considerable part of those allowances represented profit"."

Employers are still pissing all over women's rights :(

Flyer747 · 04/07/2013 13:17

Wow interesting read....I wonder after that how BA pay their pregnant ladies? It is something that I could raise with my union rep and see what his feedback is, I will get in touch with him.

Clapham I know the maternity pay is pretty dire isn't it...6 weeks 90% then smp. I'm lucky in that I have no debt and DP has his own business so we are comfortable and he is very kind and generous but that's not the point I like having my own financial security. I just hate the thought of not being independent financially, I've always been able to look after myself in that department and it's something that I consider very important for me anyway. I'm sure my priorities will change once our baby comes along.

PseudoBadger · 04/07/2013 13:23

Please do Flyer, as that ruling does not only affect BA

Flyer747 · 04/07/2013 13:24

I pseudo and thanks for taking the time to post that. X

Flyer747 · 04/07/2013 13:24

I will do (meant to say)

Natalieand · 04/07/2013 13:39

I love all the how I met my... stories :-)

flyer hope I can resolve your lay issues, sneaky swines! No matter how good of an employer anyone is the truth is 99% of them r more concerned about themselves than their employees

clapham I hope u made it to your interview in one peice*

Lucky I had an alarm set up on my phone for 12pm or dd the poor love would have been the forgotten one at playschool pick up as a I dozed off lol

Smitten1981 · 04/07/2013 14:04

Clapham Yes, he's still my boss. Luckily our company is very laid back. I think because we've always worked together it's fine really, never had any issues.

I get to boss him about when we're not as work!

cuillereasoupe · 04/07/2013 15:30

I met DP internet dating too. I was very picky to begin with, got absolutely nowhere for a year and a half, then thought "sod it I'm just going to meet everyone who asks". DP was number five of those Grin We're from completely different backgrounds - I'm an academic, he's a drummer - so we'd never have met otherwise!

Haylebop12 · 04/07/2013 15:36

Ah loved reading all your stories!

DH and I met on holiday. I was 19, had spent a few months letting my life go off track eg, pulling out of uni, splitting up with first love etc and ended up with a bad guy who I thought was cool Hmm. After I split with him my mum and nan paid for my sis and I to go on holiday to Turkey for a week. On the third night we bumped into DH and his brother and took advantage of their generosity by getting very drunk indeed! (I took £40 as it was all inclusive and I was skint!) So we spent most of the holiday together, as it also stopped my sis and I getting harrased. Swapped numbers and took it from there. I drove up 3 days after returning after work at 12pm, stayed the night and left at 8am the next day! Apparantly I made a joke and said ''Well this is something to tell the Grandkids'' Shock He lived in Manchester and I was in the Midlands. The next time I saw him was when I invited him down to my brothers wedding after a week to which he asked if we were a couple. eeek! Needless to say we spent lots of time travelling up and down the M6!

Fell pregnant with dd after 9 months and then I moved in once I finished work at 34 weeks. Lived there for two years but didnt like it so we moved to where I'm originally from and hey ho things are great hence why dc2 is on the way!

Clapham doesnt sound like your having a very successful week!

Haylebop12 · 04/07/2013 15:37

oh and we have been together 6 years this august :)

TheFalconsmistress · 04/07/2013 16:20

Back from MW everything ok but i now measure 34 weeks in the bump :S they are showing no concern but i'm worried I will have a 10lb baby and she will get stuck or something horrid!Confused

claphammama · 04/07/2013 16:26

does it mean they will give you a growth scan falcon?

Just confirmed my maternity leave start date - my last day in the office will be Friday, 27th September, three and a half weeks before my due date. First it will be two weeks of my remaining holidays and then my maternity leave will kick in about a week before my due date. 50 working days left not counting today... give me some strength...

JellyCurls · 04/07/2013 16:47

Loving these how I met DH stories...

I got talking to DH at a works night out when I was a student. After talking all night it turns out we were in same P1 class when we were 5 but then I moved schools. Met next night in pub and he had class photo with him and we are sitting next to each other in it. Married 11 years now and been together since that drunken night.

My tail bone really hurts now sore to sit stand and move so in a proper grump tonight

HotSoupDumpling · 04/07/2013 16:54

My tail bone has also been really painful. Standing up from a sitting position is awful. The only thing that helps is sitting on my argos exercise ball!

TheFalconsmistress · 04/07/2013 16:56

clapham I think they will give me one if i am still measuring big at my next appointment at 31 weeks if not I will pay for a private one just to put my mind at ease. I don't have abnormal fluid levels and I have only put on a stone so not sure how she is so big? There is not much they do other than possible induction if she is big big iyswim and they watch out when im labouring incase she gets stuck, im worried sick they see no concern I think they worry more with little babies or big babies to pettiet people but as i am a big girl and 5'7 I suppose they are not worried??

JellyCurls · 04/07/2013 16:57

HotSoup will need to invest in one then, wonder if I can sit on one at work?

Natalieand · 04/07/2013 17:05

falcon excuse me if I've mixed u up with someone else but do have a raised BMI? I have a high BMI and as a result always measured larger with dd and have growth scans this time at 28 and 34 weeks as the concern is the midwife will not be able to accurately measure my uterus or feel the baby's position eg she might say yehp head down when infact baby could be breech. Dd was 8.8lbs at 39.5 so if they had let me go two weeks over she would have been a biggen x

HotSoupDumpling · 04/07/2013 17:07

Jelly - I've seen people do it on New Girl and in Hollywood movies! I'm too short, so my ball is smaller than the usual ones and I wouldn't be able to reach the keyboard...

Falcon - I'm not sure if they ever get too worried. I was anxious about being little and having a big baby, but no one I spoke to seemed concerned even with it happening in theory! I was also thinking of having a scan near birth to put my mind at ease.

TheFalconsmistress · 04/07/2013 17:19

No natalie you are right my BMI is 38-39 atm and they said they can shave a few weeks off due to this but she measured 30 weeks at 25+6 on ultrasound last time too!

hotsoup Its hard to be left to worry isn't it I have decided if i measure big at next appointment I will get a scan on the 27th it 100 pound but they are so much clearer than the NHS scans too.
