Sorry to hear about your back Flyer and fingers crossed for a quick appointment.

Just wondering whether anyone else is due to have a test for Gestational Diabetes at 27 weeks due to being over 35? Anyone have any idea how common it is for it to be positive?

claphammama · 17/06/2013 15:01

hope you feel better soon orange and flyer!

orange I guess he's signed you off for a few days?
flyer are you getting any pregnancy massages? They make a big difference

bridget I'm also over 35 (actually 38 next month.... no!!!!!! I'm in denial...!!) no word about any testing for gestational diabetes. Was your BMI over or under 25 at booking? I thought it depended on BMI more than age...

MrsO27 · 17/06/2013 15:05

slippy do you know if that pump is a good one? The review section on mumsnet gives it some poor reviews, but it does seem good value for money and gets some better reviews on other sites.

roxvox · 17/06/2013 15:05

Thanks MoN, glad it's not just me who isn't getting measured! And I guess I thought I would be having more blood taken too.

Flyer my back seems to be progressively getting worse too. It feels as though my spine is trying to bend inwards, but when I try to correct it (i.e. stand/lie/sit straight) then it hurts my stomach. It doesn't sound as though it is as bad as yours though. I hope you get some physio help soon.

cuillereasoupe · 17/06/2013 15:05

Could be worse clapham, I'll be 39 by the time the baby is born Shock

claphammama · 17/06/2013 15:11

haha you win cuille! But how did it happen to us...? I have no idea... I still feel about 25 (or more like 15 some days...) It's totally sneaked up on me!

OrangeBlossom2 · 17/06/2013 15:22

Thanks all. Clapham she said to rest my voice completely if possible but didn't actually mention not going to work and I will be administering the year 1 phonics test over the next few days which I don't want to miss so have said I will be in. Shouldn't involve too much talking and only teaching the whole class in the afternoons when not testing. It feels worse at night so I should cope. I went to boots to get advice on lozenges. Lockets are ok as basically just sugar. The rest all say ask pharmacist, she suggested the honey strepsils are ok but to only take if really needed which is what I will do.

Bridget yes I learnt to drive and got a manual licence 7 years ago but then only drove an automatic since then which is about to break down any moment and isn't suitable for a car seat. I had 10 hours of refresher lessons paid for by insurance after a car accident which I took in a manual car. Lessons went really well but first drive in DHs car didn't. I stalled three times, panicked and cried when the man behind kept beeping his horn at me and haven't tried again since... I really need to and will be forced to once mine conks out for good. Good luck with yours! Are you able to practise outside of the lessons? I needed loads too because I didn't have anyone else to take me. I think I did about 20 2 hour lessons which seems a lot. I passed first time though.

cazboldy · 17/06/2013 15:35

Bridget I'm having a glucose test too, but not because of age (i'm 31) but because I have (had?) PCOS which increases the risk apparently.

I had one at 12 ish weeks too and it was fine.

OrangeBlossom2 · 17/06/2013 15:42

My baby is really active today because I am just lying in bed I am not rocking it to sleep. It is lovely to feel it pottering around in there. I wonder how long until it reaches my ribs and I don't like it so much!

Slippysnow · 17/06/2013 15:55

mrs0 I saw it had mixed reviews but took a gamble on it. I put it together the other night and the suction seems scarily strong. Easy to assemble unlike some reviews stated, it looks like my friends madela swing. This is my first baby so can't give a real review until baby is born, but for the price it seemed like a good deal, if it doesn't work I'll be writing for my money back.

FeministInTraining · 17/06/2013 16:11

Bridget I'm having a GTT next Thursday as I'm mixed race- a bit weird though, they didn't mention it at my booking then put me in for it during my 16wk app with a different midwife. Seems to be different rules depending on who you see! Not looking forward to it though, too long to be going without food!! I'm feeling ok though, will go and google symptoms in a bit...

Smitten1981 · 17/06/2013 16:24

I'm supposed to have a GTT, but not sure whether to bother, surely they can tell if you have Gestational Diabetes from a urine test?

I can't be bothered to sit in a hospital for hours waiting about.

claphammama · 17/06/2013 17:08

did they tell you why you should have it smitten?

Smitten1981 · 17/06/2013 17:17

She said that it was because by the time I get to 29 weeks my BMI would be over 30. It wasn't at booking in though - sigh.

I have a second booking appt Wednesday at the new hospital, so I'll ask if it's really necessary then.

I'm fed up of tests that make me worry for no reason.

BowlFullofJelly · 17/06/2013 17:19

I have the GTT at 28 weeks but for BMI of 30 - no idea how common Gestational Diabetes is though to be honest. Smitten they can't tell from urine test, as glucose needs to be tested at fasting, and then later to see how your body processes the sugar. To be honest I wasn't going to bother, but have student midwife and didn't want to upset her Smile.

Re breast pumps, haven't tried the Tommee Tippee, but didt try a couple, and the Medela is excellent - I would say for any ladies planning to express as main part of feeding, or when going back to work etc to invest in one, as they are SOO much quicker and more efficient than others I tried.

Smitten1981 · 17/06/2013 17:28

I don't think I'm going to bother.

DH's mum's best friend said her daughter had gestational diabetes (she had twins last month). She didn't have the GTT as she was under the weight/age limit for it.

It's just random whether you get it or not, I'm sick of being risk assessed because 'computer says no'.

PseudoBadger · 17/06/2013 17:44

"She said that it was because by the time I get to 29 weeks my BMI would be over 30. It wasn't at booking in though - sigh."

That's shocking! All assessments are meant to be made from your bmi at booking I believe. I'd tell them where to stick it at your next appointment x

Natalieand · 17/06/2013 17:51

Evening all, just caught up on my phone on way back from Devon had a nice 4 day break away despite the weather not being the best :-/ so excuse me if I miss someone or something

Congrats on the pregnancy littlepea I have brought maternity clothes from simply be as I am plus size I am about a size 24 but new look size 18 maternity tops fit me so have brought some of them too. Xx

bridget I had a GTT with dd at 28 weeks and this time I had one about 2 weeks after booking in as my blood sugar was high but the GTT came back clear and I will be having a other one at 27 weeks but they come to my house to do it. I think I have to have mine as I am significantly overweight.

Congrats to those who have scanned while I was away and on the boys!

Always best to take fundal measurements with a pinch of salt as a friend measured 5 weeks less than she should be and her baby weighed 8.9lbs. And I always measured 10 weeks ahead and dd weighed 8.8lbs lol

Dh felt the baby kick yesterday which was nice for Father's Day :-)

Think I've covered everything?lol

Natalieand · 17/06/2013 17:52

Oh and also I have only been weighed once and that was when I went to see the consultant but as I worked in ante natal clinic when I used to work at the hospital I know that is standard there regardless of what u are seeing the consultant for x

Haylebop12 · 17/06/2013 17:55

My bmi was 30 at booking in, nowt mentioned about GTT to me. I have my 25 mw appt a week on Friday so maybe something will be mentioned then?

slippy so far I've bought the TT manual pump as i have the bottles (really good deal) and hope to express 1-3 feeds a day eventually (probably the night ones so dh can help when he's off, but also daytime ones so my mum "gets a go"). Wanted to invest in the electric one but the price was a put off. My brother also
Works for tesco so that's another 10% off... Ill have a look when the offers on till as baby money has been spent for this month Smile

OrangeBlossom2 · 17/06/2013 18:07

Can they do anything about gestational diabetes if you get it anyway?

Haylebop12 · 17/06/2013 18:28

Pump offers on until 1st July and I'm sure dh has £10 in club card vouchers :-)

roofio87 · 17/06/2013 18:32

I think I'm going to wait till baby is here before investing in breast pump. I'm worried that I'll fork out for one now and struggle with bf and have wasted the money. I won't be expressing straight away so think I'll wait and see how I get on first!

Smitten1981 · 17/06/2013 18:46

Orange - I think they just ask you to cut out sugar or carbs from your diet to keep your insulin/glucose levels stable.

cazboldy · 17/06/2013 18:50

roofio they do say wait until bf is established before expressing anyway.... I have with all of mine form about 6 weeks onwards, always used an avent hand pump no probs..... but need to get a new one this time as the rubber seals have all perished and it's gone a bit yellow!
