Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
JammyTummy · 19/06/2013 17:17

Went for my MW apt this afternoon and she was absolutely useless. Her condesending solution to pretty much everything I mentioned was to have a warm bath, she went in a puff when I asked her whether she was going to measure my bump or not (no she said. So when I asked why she went on a big spiel about how she measures me with her finger, cause using a measuring tape was a new thing and they oldies don't do that, but if I don't trust her experience then she will just go ahead! Eh?! How was I supposed to know what she measured me with). She then proceeded to drain half the blood from my body so I almost fainted and had to lie down for about 5 minutes so I could start seeing again! And the good news is, she is taking my ante natal classes! Yay!

Hmm
badguider · 19/06/2013 17:22

That sounds rubbish jammy - my MW doesn't measure with a tape either, but she does communicate with me (she's good) and she feels and tells me each time if the baby/uterus has reached the right place on my body for the weeks I am. She says measuring it relative to my body is better than in cms and to be honest I see where she's coming from as I'm short so obviously have less distance from my pubic bone to my ribs. E.g. at 24 weeks the top of the uterus should have been (and was) level with my belly button. At 28 weeks it was somewhere higher than that which again she pronounced 'just right'.

jennimoo · 19/06/2013 17:57

I'd pack as many babygros as you can, I had to change DD several times and she was born at 1135pm and we were home by 5pm next day...

Kittenkatzen · 19/06/2013 18:35

Oh charl that sucks balls, Thanks for you. I might be joining you in diabetics corner shortly - been booked in for a full GTT next Thursday. runningbear that's a shocking statistic about the test being so unreliable that it might be wrong in 50-70% of cases Shock

PurplePoppySeed · 19/06/2013 21:24

Just catching up with all the news and I'm finding it really interesting how much each area differs in their approach to pregnancy!

I'm seeing it with friends to -

My dad has diabetes but given my own BMI I'm not having the test, yet a friend is having the test based on her dad! Both of our dads have type 2 but we are treated differently.

Then my work colleague was measured at 25 weeks, got flagged as too big and is having weekly scans and measurements for borderline Polyhydramnios, but my midwife says there is no point measuring until 28 weeks as before that it varies too much to be worth it!

I know they all manage their own budgets but it is odd to think how different our care is base on these seemingly small decisions about testing/measuring!

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be in the radar, but likewise I hope you're all trying not to worry too much about things like this Flowers

PurplePoppySeed · 19/06/2013 21:25

under the radar - sorry stupid iPad type-o

HettySunshine · 19/06/2013 21:35

I'm spending a night in hospital after having a bleed this afternoon. I was absolutely terrified and rang dp and then the hospital in floods of tears but everything is fine. There was some additional panic when the midwife couldn't fond a heart beat, she tried three different machines with no result but then the senior midwife had a go and she found it straightaway. I have never been so relieved! My cervix is closed and no pain or contractions or anything.

They are just keeping me in for observation and to give me a steroid injection in the morning. The midwives have been fabulous and I actually feel more at ease about the birth now that I have had a practise go at being in hospital. What a panic though!

Joskar · 19/06/2013 22:02

Hetty That sounds really scary! Hope you are ok and glad you're getting such good care.

Charl Arrgh! That's rotten. I'm getting my blood checked tomorrow and I'm terrified they'll say I have gestational diabetes because there is no way I can do any exercise at all and I'm relying on chocolate to make it through the next couple of months. Your calm attitude has made me feel a bit better though. Well done you. Although I'm not quite at the stage of weeping at wee cola bottles Smile I reckon I'm pretty emotional just now and would have dissolved into a puddle at this news.

stubbed thanks for your response. I hadn't really thought about drying. We don't have central heating and we can't get a dryer because we don't have mains electric either so this is really something I need to discuss with DH. Because we have to make our own electricity I am really torn about the whole thing. I reckon I will try it and if it becomes unsustainable then switch to disposables. I need to see the real nappies in action I think.

ION Today has been awfully difficult. I saw the orthopedic man today and he was great if quite overwhelming. He's given me insoles so that I am able to walk again. Apparently my feet are the flattest he's seen (this is a competition I'm not happy to win) and the insoles are altering my arches by about 2 cms. Unfortunately it is going to take a fair while to make a difference and it's going to hurt and it won't "cure" me but just make the symptoms easier to cope with. This means that I am unlikely to be back to work before the baby is born. I'm feeling pretty low about the whole thing. Also unfortunately he gave me hell about my shoes and made me promise to go and buy "proper" shoes with laces much like what a granny or an old fashioned staff nurse might wear. I have never spent so much money on shoes I loathe before. I felt quite faint.

CharlW1 · 19/06/2013 22:09

Virtual hugs Hetty sounds like you are being well looked after but I imagine it was such a shock! it's goodthere are no pain or contractions Flowers

Purple I agree it is odd how differently you are treated depending where you are in the country. In my area to test for GTT is not routine - I was a size 10/12 before pregnancy and didn't fit into any category - they were not going to test me until I insisted as my twin sister had it in her pregnancy. With my sister again she didn't fit into any category of high risk and even when she had symptoms they didn't test her and it was only when shehad a hypo and was really ill at 32 weeks did she get tested.
I think it does really depend on the midwife you have as not one of my midwives have mentioned anti d or wc and I only know about the latter because of you ladies but yesterday when I saw the diabetes midwife she wasamazed by how little I had been told so just went through everything and kept apologising - I'm glad I willonly see her for my mw appointments now.

HettySunshine · 20/06/2013 03:26

Get ear plugs! Everyone single one of you that is planning to be in hospital. They are a godsend. I just woke up to go to the loo and took them out and I can't believe how many little noises they are cancelling out. Get them, get them, get them! Smile

OP posts:
RunningBear78 · 20/06/2013 04:35

Oh Hetty, hope all goes well and you get the all clear tomorrow. Good to hear they are keeping a close eye on you though. And well done for treating it as a run through!
Joskar, sounds pretty rubbish, but then I hate and totally disagree with using orthotics (as an archaeologist I'm obviously well placed to say this [hmmm]) but im pretty sure they shouldn't make yr feet hurt more!? Rubbish about the shoes, but if they let you get out and about that must be a good thing?

As for drying nappies, a dehumidifier should do the trick I place of a dryer/central heating. They are quite cheap but amazing and keep the humidity down across the house if you can control. One room with washing in.

Badguider. Phone the nct shop. There is a field on the order form named special instructions or something, just put the due date and required delivery date in and that should do it ... I'll let you know if ours turns up next week by accident!

On the diabetes front, dont worry too much, from physiologists i know all preggo women have it to a degree. I've had serious sugar crashes (apple tart induced) but easily treatable with less sugary food! Or a steady stream of chocolate Grin no, seriously, once you get your head around what causes and fixes it it is easily manageable.

Ion our tour of the birth centre was good. Other ladies were all past 36 weeks though!? I like the way it is very active birth, low intervention and drug focussed and all midwife run. They have three pools and rooms without pools, and the medical delivery suite is just downstairs. All seems ok, but scary, but alright. Will still try to investigate home birth though I think, as I don't fancy a night in hospital with the new baby and without dh ... Although I think he quite liked the thought of getting a good nights rest post birth before we came home!

God im tired ... Been awake for two hours, can't see how im going to go back to sleep now it is light outside and the birds are already tweeting a dawn chorus! Aaaggghhh

HettySunshine · 20/06/2013 05:14

Thank you everyone for you kind words. I feel much better this morning after a (bit of) sleep. I'm looking forward to a shower and a quiet day at home. Smile

kipsonline · 20/06/2013 08:16

Woah! That's a busy few days of posts! Good luck hetty, charl and joksar with hospital/bleed, diabetes and feet. Thinking of you all.
I am doing ok at giving myself a daily blood thinning injection into my tummy. Feels v v wrong when I can feel him wriggling away as I do it but I keep telling myself it's just something I have to do.... My leg is less swollen already so it's obviously working. I'm back at work trying desperately to finish everything off just in case it happens again (have also forced DH to paint the nursery this week and hope to start getting stuff out of loft nxt wk.., having a scare like that has put a rocket up my bum ;))

PurplePoppySeed · 20/06/2013 08:16

Hope you feel better and get home today hetty Flowers

joskar have you tried fitflops or standard trainers first? I was forced into orthotics a few years ago when I had knee problems that resulted in surgery, but my current osteopath (also seeing me for PGP) said as long as you have arch support all the time that's what is important - so needless to say I'm in fitflops round the house instead of bare feet / slippers! I had the same pain issues as you with orthotics, though it did get better over time I promise.

I've started 1 day a week from home now and work are paying for taxi's in London to avoid me carrying my laptop about, but annoyingly, no improvement to the pain - keep us posted if orthotics help as I'm wondering if I should dig mine out just in case!

kipsonline · 20/06/2013 08:20

Oh, and on what to wear in labour l, I second the view of considering your birth partner's choice of clothes carefully (!) DH wore this awful lurid checked shirt for the birth of DS2 for some reason and because I was squeezing his hand for each contraction I was staring at it at such close range that I swear I started to hallucinate!!! I became so irrational about it as labour progressed I was v close to forcing him to take the blummin thing off!!!! I did then start to bleed, a lot, and even though he was at the head end, said shirt got covered in blood splats and had to be binned after the event. Shame ;)

kipsonline · 20/06/2013 08:23

Thinking about it, for my first labour, he had to rush straight from work so was in a suit . He ended up changing into the old oversized t shirt I had taken to give birth in!!!! Maybe he'll get it right third time lucky??!!

kipsonline · 20/06/2013 08:27

Oh and ear plugs for hospital, definitely! And one of those eye masks too if you feel you can get away with it. The wards are noisy, bright and HOT. Def think less rather than more on the clothing front. And take lots of showers! I think I sweated off a few pounds last week when I was in, either that or the NHS food diet but I def lost weight...

Readytosettle · 20/06/2013 08:34

I seem to be suffering the return of the nausea....anyone got any ideas how to get rid of it? Feeling soo sick all the time, not sure if it's the baby pushing on my digestive system? I really don't have the energy for it right now :-(

andadietcoke · 20/06/2013 08:59

hetty hope they get you sorted out and home soon. Will definitely remember ear plugs!

ready I'm back to throwing up 2-3 times a week in the mornings, and losing my appetite in the evenings. Think it's fairly common, not sure we can do anything about it, much like morning sickness.

jennimoo · 20/06/2013 09:46

My sickness comes and goes, as do aches and bump ache. I think it depends what's going on in there!

Mooster1709 · 20/06/2013 11:27

Poor you Hetty, what a horrible scare.

Also poor you to charl (though am v impressed with your calm attitude. I would be sulking and stamping. You are obviously a proper grown-up).

And, and, Joskar I hope your feet get a bit better - I was given orthotics for a running injury (those were the days) a few years ago and once everything adjusted to them they really really helped. Fingers crossed yours might do the same?

Final sympathetic noises to Ready and andadietcoke. Sickness on top of tiredness, hugeness and kicking must be horrible.

On the earplugs, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to hear my baby cry (i.e. as opposed to all of the ther babies around) or be woken up by her. Usually I'm surgically attached to my earplugs but thought I would have to try to wean myself off them. Any thoughts?

Can I have a quick rant? Feel free to ignore, but DH is away and my mum's phone is engaged so need somewhere to vent! As soon as I got into work this morning I found out that I was going to have to share my office, and with someone who I find probably the most irritating man in the department. I am in a major mood about it. He does lots of teaching so will have students in here the whole bloody time, which means I'll never be able to get any work done (I work at a university but do research rather than teaching). And I just generally hate sharing because I feel constantly observed (for example when I should be working but am on mn. Ahem). So I'll end up working at home rather than coming in to the office which a) sends me a bit mental after a while due to lack of human contact, and b) is irritating because I've booked into the nursery at work which we get on a salary sacrifice scheme, but will now have to look at ones near home. Arrrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh.

I know I am behaving like a spoiled brat, but: hurrumph. End of rant.

fl0b0t · 20/06/2013 11:52

hetty sounds very scary, glad you're ok.
moonster we all need a rant every now and again. I got stressed when we moved offices as I had a great corner seat before. It's all fine now but I spent ages feeling really cagey about the position of my desk :-S

ready I lost my antisickness tablets last night (found them earlier, I'd helpfully put them in the bin Confused). As a consequence I've spent the morning feeling AWFUL. I'm desperate to vomit but holding it in as I want this mornings tablet to go down. I also need to go and get a repeat prescription and the drs is only open for another hour today, but I feel to sick to get up and leave the sofa. whingemoan :(

Geesescareme · 20/06/2013 12:08

Feeling sorry for myself today as day 2 of work with terrible sore throat. Been to doctors who wouldn't give me antibiotics but said my eardrums were inflamed and had a high temp. Went to the shop and proceeded to buy myself white choc magnums, liquorice alsorts and lardy cake. I can't even blame it on cravings, it's just because I can and I will!

fl0b0t · 20/06/2013 12:47

I now need lardy cake. Stat.

I made it to the drs and back after throwing up all my breakfast. I bought ice lollies and fishcakes for lunch.

RunningBear78 · 20/06/2013 13:02

It looks like the wellness of the second trimester has truly gone. So sorry to hear so many of you are feeling sick again! I've been feeling a bit ropey but couldn't work out why (duh) but I wasn't expecting a return of sickness at this point, just joint/leg/back pain and kicks! Oh well, I wonder what other treats are in store for us?

Well done ladies for stocking up on treats, at this point you need anything you can keep down/makes you feel better Flowers

Mooster rant noted and approved Biscuit Working at home can be ok though - apart from the lack of human contact. My voice goes all strange when i don't talk to anyone all day, so I have started talking to my bump, which i think is slightly less strange than talking to myself? At least he can hear me!
