Well consultant gave Socs a thumbs up today and I'm a ok too apparently. Hurrah. Also took a peak at the birthing unit, so if I do get the a-ok following 34 week scan I may be able to opt for that rather than Labour ward, safe in knowledge that labour ward is just a short trolley ride away should - god forbid - anything go wrong or I decide I need stronger pain relief asap. Which is quite likely I suspect. The birth unit was fabulous and a MW called me this afternoon to answer some extra questions that I had which the lady who gave me the tour couldn't answer. All huge thumbs up from me.

In terms of food and drink, I really hadn't considered it. I'm not a fan of squash (vile stuff - blurgh) in any format, snazzy or no, so no isotronic drinks, ribena or anything else thanks. Suspect water and some fruit juice will do me and if I am allowed tea (decaf) then a consistent supply would be marvellous. I'm not sure if I can get an intravenous tea drip but if I can that is for me. Soooo terribly British. I know lots of people who swear by isotronic drinks though, so no reason why it shouldn't work for a lady in labour if you like them - whether you think they are overpriced or not. After all, labour is basically a serious work-out for your rarely otherwise used muscles.

Benig a complete child I have spent today giggling about breast shells. As has MrM. We have already agreed that post Socs birth I will be nicknamed Daisy. It is a whole new world opening up to me here. Breast pumps, breast pads, breast shells.. I hope I manage to keep my sense of humour about it all. I suspect I will. The more I think on it, I mean honestly, it is funny isn't it.

Dried fruit etc sounds very good but if I am in labour for more than a few hours will it be sufficient? Do they allow pizza delivery men to birth or labour wards?

Help!!! I was just washing up and there was a pan my OH had left fir a few days with a smaller pan inside. He'd made bolognese and there was meat left in it which stank and had white bacteria growing on it. I didn't expect it to be there and inhaled as I lifted it up!

Medical types on here - is inhaling this going to harm me or LO??!

I obviously washed it really thoroughly with antibac and rinsed and cleaned everywhere around it too.

My throat feels weird now but maybe I'm just being paranoid?

GummiberryJuice · 21/01/2013 19:14

Leni you shall be fine as long as you didn't eat it!

I've never brought any food with me (can't remember wanting to eat either)but this time I'm going to a birthing unit that has a lovely kitchen for partners to make what ever they like so maybe will give that abit more thought.

SoYo · 21/01/2013 19:16

leni it shouldn't cause you any problems at all other than the need to dispose of the body once you've killed OH

As for the hospital bag snacks I'm thinking Haribo, chocolate & water plus maybe some fruit so I don't look a complete porker!

Managed the 63m drive into work this morning after digging my car out but completely shat myself skidding on the way. Was fine once I got onto motorway and coming home was ok again until I got to my road! Thankfully I've taken tomorrow off as its my birthday! Last one before Bubs but not much fun to be has as all friends are snowed out and DH on nights, PuppyMonster and I will have to celebrate with a snowball fight!!!

Oodsigma · 21/01/2013 19:32

I'm a c-section so don't need to worry about labour food but dh will be bringing me meals & fruit & veg when I'm in as they don't do veggie v well (jacket pot and tiny tub of cheese ) and theres never any veg. How does that help recovery, breastfeeeding & potential constipation?

Em2010 · 21/01/2013 19:49

soyo that sounds like a good way to celebrate your birthday! Journey to work sounds scary!

tramp pleased to hear hospital went well! I think I could go for a tea drip, in fact I wouldn't mind one at my desk as well!!

Sorry I can't remember who suggested jelly beans but that sounds like a great idea. I will probably take some cherry coke in too as I found that was good during my last labour.

Last week at work this week and I'm very ready to finish! Can't wait to get on with nesting and get all my chores done so I feel organised and relaxed in time for baby's arrival!

Hope everyone staying warm in this snow!

LaurenCaddy · 21/01/2013 19:53

I hope your oki Leni! I would cause damage to my OH, drives me insane when he doesn't even wipe down the surfaces if he's been cutting things or preparing things!

That's really bad Ood, can't you talk to them before your planned date and ask them for more suitable vegetarian options? Surely midwives should realise that is not suitable for a new mum, and it should be brought to their attention!

I too would like to know about Pizza Delivery to hospitals! That sounds very very nice. Or wonder if i'm allowed MacDonalds. Hmmm. Grin

Just wondering how everyone's babies are lying. My mum said at 32 weeks, she should be head down by now, feet under my ribs ect Isabelle's always been a bit laid back/lazy and currently she is side to side. Head to the left of my belly, bum and legs to the right side. Should i be concerned? Is anyone else like this? :/

SoYo · 21/01/2013 20:10

No need to be concerned until after 36 weeks Lauren. Bubba's 34 weeks tomorrow and still spinning although a bit less this week!

There's a really good Chinese takeaway just out of the back doors of my LW (used to work there so know all junk food within 2mile radius!). DH and I definitely have plans of sneaking some spring rolls in! The trick to takeaway on LW/PN ward is to offer to get some for the midwives....then they'll definitely let you have it!

leniwhite · 21/01/2013 20:15

Thanks all, much less panicked now!

SoYo I bet your heart jumped into your throat? Such an awfully scary moment...

I don't see why you can't order pizza anywhere you want really - they can always call your OH to meet them at the door Wink not sure all that cheese would help when it comes to pushing though...

I'm a Percy Pig fan, especially the Reversy Percys, sticky goodness!

I sent OH a pissed off text (he's gone to work) but no reply. Normal for him though. Constantly asking him to wash his hands after going to the loo and not wipe raw meaty hands on tge dish cloth. Men don't really seem to understand hygiene Shock

I ate a pomegranate today and I think it burned more calories dismantling it that I gained eating it, lovely but quite a stupid fruit!

leniwhite · 21/01/2013 20:18

Oh and btw - my LO has been head down for weeks already and is now constantly scraping feet knees around at the top of my belly by my ribs and simultaneously punching me in the cervix and bladder. Apparently a good exercise to position them well is to sit on a ball and rotate your hips in a circle, although I don't know if it really works

plonko · 21/01/2013 20:20

Tramp someone just has to mention the word 'breast' and I turn a violent shade of pink! Yesterday DP said it'll be nice when my boobs aren't resting on my big tummy anymore. He's such a charmer. Oh well, I'm sure motherhood is just the thing to rid me of my prudish ways!

I had to empty my hospital bag today so DP and I could walk through the woods to buy provisions. The snow has been so bad here that we can't get the car off the drive! Anyway, in doing so realised that my pathetic attempt at packing was, well, pathetic! Seriously, two big tops, a pair of flip flops and pads for various parts and that was it. Anyway, at least it was a stark reminder to get going on it seeing as I now only have 5 weeks to go (aaaaaaargh!). I think snack wise I'll go for cereal bars, something chocolatey like clubs, some juice/squash, dried fruit and if my brain is in gear when we're leaving the house, a bag of apples. I'm not so concerned about food during labour, but more afterwards if I end up on the ward. Lauren I've already decided that we're stopping for a McD's on the way home with newborn!

Leni it won't do you any damage at all, but your DP better watch his back!

Apparently my baby's head down but at last check not engaged. Feels lower though, but apparently he's flipped back to back so maybe this has something to do with it? Am starting to get lots of hip pain and tingling around my bum, which suggest he's lying on a nerve. I'm starting to get really nervous but I can't wait to meet him now!

LaurenCaddy · 21/01/2013 20:48

Thanks SoYo that makes me feel a little better. So she has another 4 weeks to get into position before it becomes something i should worry about. I'm thinking of getting checked anyway, i' concerned that the sharp stabbing pain in my left side might be my Hydronephrosis coming back, especially if she's kicking my kidneys. Spent 4 agony filled days in hospital at 18 weeks with it being poked and prodded with all sorts of antibiotics and things. So i want to get on top of it before it gets that far if it has made a return.

Will try that Leni, when my OH gets off it ¬¬ He uses it when playing xbox. Does make me laugh when he gets carried away in a battle/duel/fight like-thing and falls off backwards. Muhahaha.

Will have to add a list of local takeaways to my hopsital bag then i think. I've got a feeling its Burger King in Taunton. Mmmmm.

Oodsigma · 21/01/2013 20:53

No options food wise. They say they do veggie options but I'm used to nice cooking (dh!) and lots of veg so one day of crap is all I can stand. No takeaways nearby either. Hospital canteen food is much better than the ward stuff so dh might have to sneak some up!
Part of the reason I want home ASAP this time too

plonko · 21/01/2013 21:07

Ood I agree, I cannot cope with more than a day's worth of shit food. If necessary I'll be sending DP to sainsburys for proper provisions. TBH the only thing I feel really strongly about is that I'd like to be discharged from the labour ward if possible so I don't have to put up with being in a hospital!

leniwhite · 21/01/2013 22:17

Lauren you're in Taunton? I was born in Musgrove!
What's hydronephrosis? Sounds nasty Confused

Em2010 · 22/01/2013 06:43

I was in hospital for nearly 2 weeks after ds was born. I'm not sure if the anaemia was caused by the birth or the hospital diet! It disappeared within 48 hours of getting home!

tramp and plonko if you think giggling at boob related stuff is bad, just wait! I spent yesterday afternoon googling Beavers for my ds. I had a little giggle! (Especially given some of the results that could have been thrown up!)

pudtat · 22/01/2013 07:17

leni snap!

dgift · 22/01/2013 09:58

@CourgetteDOTcom, thanks for those encouraging words. I am much better now.

leniwhite · 22/01/2013 10:27

Small world Pudtat! Us Somerset lasses are everywhere Wink

My LO is doing some really violent all over movements today - hoping this is normal? Feels like he's having a kind of all-over body spasm...

LaurenCaddy · 22/01/2013 10:54

Yes up at Musgrove :) I was up at the Fern Ward for hydronephrosis, it's where to start with my baby was leaning on my kidney tubes, causing a blockage, and swelling of my kidney. Absolute agony. I was told it may come back towards the end, which i'm dreading. It's so painful :( It caused me major dehydration, as i couldn't keep anything even water down. As well as a very nasty UTI. So was stuck in with 5 bags of saline, through a drip as well as liquid antibiotics through it and oral paractemol. Worst couple of days ever!! Apparently 1 in 100 pregnant ladies get it the midwife told me.

This is why her being side to side worries me, don't want her sitting on my kidney or kicking it again. If it gets bad you get induced.

I've not been in the other ward just the Fern Ward. They was lovely there.

I myself was born in Birmingham QE Womens hospital though! We only moved down 3 years ago.

Haha all over spasm. Isabelle was creating wave like motions yesterday when we was listening to Meatloaf and Shakespeares Sister. Clearly she likes power ballads.

LaurenCaddy · 22/01/2013 10:56

Also planning on Googling beavers now Em as that sounds like it could be fun haha.

plonko · 22/01/2013 12:42

Ouch lauren that sounds nasty! However good to see youre training that LO with Shakespeare's Sister. We've been having battles over what to play, but I quite enjoy sitting reading with my iPhone resting my belly playing smashing pumpkins. He needs to get used to living in a loud shouty-music house!

The sun has finally come out and melted some of the snow, so I'm off to ikea to spend my Christmas bonus on baby things!

Emsyboo · 22/01/2013 14:25

Oh no lauren poor you that sounds horrible!
I was in hospital for a week with DS but 6 days before only 1 day after having been in and out of hospital this time would recommend d DPs bringing food in I was very jealous last time I was in as someone had wagamamas!! X

leniwhite · 22/01/2013 18:37

Ouch... I hope you manage to avoid that! Kidneys are so painful, wonder why? I had a recurrent infection which hurt like hell both in my back and like peeing razors for about a month continuously. Somehow it got cured when they shoved a camera into my bladder without anaesthetic though! Make sure you get checked as soon as you get even the tiniest feeling it might be back.

Strange this never gets mentioned by MWs if it's so common?

I'm a Pumpkins fan too, and I make music for a living so bubba has already been on stage in France and was there whilst I recorded vocals for my last album - he goes quiet when music is on! I imagine it sounds like when you're under water in a swimming pool?

LaurenCaddy · 22/01/2013 19:57

I find a lot of things don't get mentioned, or just get grazed over. I think if we knew everything, we'd all panic far too much!

It's like, there was a lady on Mums World on Facebook, and she was passing on this message:

A month ago at 40+2 weeks pregnant my son was very very active, although for days before his movements reduced. The very next day after him being so active i felt no movement at all and went to hospital, they did scans and heart monitoring and i was told my son had passed away. I asked how that was possible due to the fact he was moving so much the day before! I was told that if a babys movements increase it is a clear sign the baby could be in distress.
I was never told by midwives or doctors during my pregnancy that increased movement was dangerous, i was always told that i should go straight to hospital if movement decreased or there was no movement at all but never to go straight to hospital if the baby was very very active. If i knew this it could of saved my sons life.
I gave birth to my angel 3 days after i found out he passed away and It turned out, his umbilical cord was detaching and he was distressed and suffering a whole lot. When he was born he was very thin and suffered from lack of oxygen which made him very bruised and if he was born breathing he would of had brain damage and many other disability's.
I was wondering if you could write on your facebook page warning women of this, and telling them that a baby who is moving a whole lot, especially after days of hardly any movement is a sign there could be something wrong and to not risk it and to go straight to hospital. It could save so many babies lifes. Thank you

They never mention that either do they?

They do say a baby hears like you would underwater. It's weird, i tried when i was in the bath, hearing my OHs voice. Strange but fun :)

I've found some great Hypnobirthing Apps recently on the Babycentre Pregnancy App. Really useful for when i'm struggling to sleep!
