Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oh Bartlet that sounds just perfect, I can't wait to hear your birth story. Congratulations again Thanks

BartletForTeamGB · 19/02/2013 19:50

So, I was taken up to the delivery suite about 9.30am on Monday after a really good (well, 5-6 hours sleep which I figured was pretty good going on a hospital ward!) night's sleep. They ruptured my membranes (there was a LOT of fluid - one of the junior doctors did it as they were concerned about the risk of cord prolapse and she was covered so she had to change her scrubs afterwards!) but when they checked 4 hours later, after a long walk around the hospital (my hospital, eek!) in my PJs and time on the birthing ball, it hadn't made much difference.

So they started the hormone drip. Now in retrospect, I should have done as one of my anaesthetist friends had told me to do and got the epidural in before it started. That said, we planned a fairly active labour at that point and the MWs (one MW and one student) were very supportive about it. However, the CTG kept picking up my heartbeat instead so they had to switch to a fetal scalp monitoring so I had to sit on the bed.

I managed for 4 hours with a TENS machine before I thought it was best to get the epidural done sooner rather than later. Thankfully I did because the epidural went in - but only provided block on my right side. My left side, now that the contractions were cracking on and I wasn't getting any decent rest, was agony. Praise God for gas & air!!! This was about 6.30pm when I was declared to be in active labour.

They tried a few things to improve matters, but they ended up having to do a second epidural. Since this morning, I have sent messages to all of my anaesthetic friends to say how wonderful they are and how I promise never to complain about them at work every again! It was just a perfect epidural. My pain had gone, but I could still feel the contractions (which we'll come back to in a minute!)

The MWs soon after all this excitement, so about 9.30pm, were then not happy with the CTG trace so I had to lie on my left side. There was then a short succession of people, senior midwives and then the obs registrar came in. She wasn't panicked but was a bit concerned so said she wanted to examine me and take a blood sample from the baby.

Then she examined me and said, "Change of plan, next time you feel a contraction, push!!!" I had begun to feel pressure over the last 15 minutes, but the baby's head was just there! A few pushes later, we had a baby!

We got lots of skin to skin and she is just great at BFing - which she did all last night until 5am! She's been checked for tongue tie and seems to be fine and she's doing everything that she should. We are just so very, very thankful for her!

BartletForTeamGB · 19/02/2013 19:52

Thanks! Glad that you are feeling so well, little. Not long before olives gets to enjoy the post-birth high.

So you can see that it wasn't an ideal 'by the book' normal delivery, especially given that I'd planned a home birth initially, but it was great, DD is great, and I feel great.

Anyway, I think DD needs fed. I'll catch up with everything else I've missed overnight, I imagine!

GreenOlives · 19/02/2013 20:24

bartlet Im so pleased that everything is going so well now that DD is finally here after your loong wait for everything to get started! And you were right about her being a DD too! Long may that high last for you and little I really hope I feel the same after babyolives arrival!
I feel it may be a while before he/she puts in an arrival, nothing has happened after yesterday s & s so we'll see if there are any developments when I have sweep no.2 on Thurs.

GreenOlives · 19/02/2013 20:27

p.s would love to see a picture of DD bartlet when you get a spare few mins! Smile

NewYearNewBoo · 19/02/2013 20:46

Bartlet dd certainly made her arrival known didn't she :) so pleased not have all settled so well, what does DS think of his new little sister?

Now ladies, I need help naming booby, I'm fine for boys names, but if I do break with tradition and have a dd, she will be nameless :( we like traditional names (preferably Scottish) and something that will go with J and C. I liked Amelia, but have gone off it now :( thanks dm and db

NewYearNewBoo · 19/02/2013 20:46

You have all settled, not not have all settled!

cartoontrickster · 19/02/2013 21:04

ah little bless u for thinking of me! I'd love to have a look at your pics, but I came off fb because I kept getting hacked Sad .
bartlett Thanks congratulations! sounds amazing. just olives left! it only feels like yesterday the 3 of u got ur bfps!

scarletfingernail · 19/02/2013 21:36

Yay Bartlet I am absolutely thrilled for you. I know it sounds a bit weird because I don't "know" you, but I have thought of you so often the last few days and was so relieved to read your update this morning, especially after all you've been through the last 18 months or so. It's wonderful you sound so elated and I absolutely get that euphoria that you feel now. Like you, I didn't get that first time, I was just in shock I'd survived it tbh. But with DD the high was instant even though she arrived by EMCS. Another request for a photo when you get a minute please. Oh and how is DS taking to having a new baby sister?

Olives that means it's you next! Eeeek how exciting! When is due date?

Great to hear from you Little. So pleased all is going well with DS. How is your DD getting on with him?

I still enjoy thinking of girl's names Boo. My favourite ever is Ines. It's Spanish but as we have no Spanish connections I would have been too embarrassed to use it because it's so unusual over here. Plus I think I'd have spent an age explaining pronunciation. Scottish girls names, I like Iona. There's a couple brooking babies called Isla which I think is lovely too.

GreenOlives · 19/02/2013 21:53

Due date is 24th scarlet but I am getting very impatient now! Come on baby Olives, your mummy, daddy and big brother are desperate to meet you now! Grin

Pregnancy is best cured by giving birth. Lovely reassuring symptoms you've got there :)

NewYearNewBoo · 20/02/2013 18:10

Hahaha Rubber you beat me to it, I was about to say a few weeks after sneeze for it to be actually enjoyable Grin

It does all sound very normal and good though Face but what it this 'glow' that is mentioned? Was I supposed to send off for it or fill in a form, I seem to have missed that Grin

cartoontrickster · 20/02/2013 18:12

thanks rubber I keep telling myself that and I would be panicing if I didn't feel like that.
sparks oh no I was hoping you would tell me how amazing things have gotten! oh well just being pregnant is amazing in itself.
