same, OH wants to use a sling but we are clueless (& on a budget!) so any suggestions welcome.

Looking out for news from JH

SilentMammoth · 10/12/2012 20:04

Mama, I'm so glad you and alexander are ok. Congratulations on reaching twenty four weeks!

Teapig · 10/12/2012 20:51

So happy to hear that you and Alexander are ok mama. Well done for getting to the 24 week mark, I hope the little fella stays put as long as poss.

Great to hear all the advice on essential baby items, I'm a first timer and find it super useful. DH also really wants a sling so I would be glad of any tips there too.

Stupid question but what are the muslins for? Yes, I am a complete novice!

OComeAllYeFaithBaby · 10/12/2012 21:20

My understanding is muslins clean up all sorts - milk, vomit etc!

SneezySnatcher · 10/12/2012 21:35

teapig muslins are good for all sorts. We used ours for wiping up sick/drool, as a nappy change mat when out and about, floor and sear covers, covering shoulders when burping etc. We also had some lovely big ones that we used for swaddles and as covers when the weather was very hot. They were Aden and Anais www.hamillbaby.com/aden-and-anais-muslin-swaddling-blankets-4-pack-19-c.asp

WRT slings. We have a Babyhawk and a Wilkinet which are both good. I quite fancy a Movy wrap too!

SneezySnatcher · 10/12/2012 21:36

Moby wrap!

KelleStarOfWonder · 10/12/2012 21:48

mama glad you are still hanging in there with your little man. 24 weeks! eep time is passing now! fx all things stay put for now.

teapig I still use muslins all the time. Squirty boobs, mopping up leaking milk when feeding, sick, as a bib, burb cloth [double fold though], lying baby out on change tables, easy to clean if you have a poosplosion, also use them in public changing rooms too. Booby coverage for public feeding, if you want to be a little discrete, also good for baby to pull on rather than your hair. lying a naked baby in the grass in the garden. Still used as bibs on DD and for cleaning up accidents whilst potty training. Just cheap ones from asda or tesco. Though was bought some funky ones from MC and they've faded rapidly and are no different fabric wise than the cheap ones. You can use dylon to dye them bright colours, but they will fade with use and the dye may come out on other things, white or pale is so easy to bung in with other things [pooy pukey things were washed on a hot wash, just to kill bacteria.]

I had a Moby wrap which is brilliant, but complicated to wrap at first. Was fine until DD fidgeted herself loose, so stopped using it after 9 months [she was a small one] DH refused to wear it though, even though I brought the dark brown one.

I have an old sling from a friend that's forward facing and was good for DD in her nosy days when she was able to hold her head up firmly. I also have the backpack type [two in fact] which are brilliant for day trips, but DD want's to constantly be looking around, so hates backs of heads, thinking about selling them now, as we really don't use them that much Blush they are second hand from eBay so it'll be good to get some cash back from them.

DD has another cold... 6 weeks of three different colds... not looking forward to this, don't want another one myself. But it means disturbed sleep and lots of whinging. Yuck!

Baby is fidgeting around quite a bit now, but goes still for DH :) My bump still seems to come and go some days.

KelleStarOfWonder · 10/12/2012 21:53

wrt to the moby wrap I am big of nork and belly and short. I found lots of slings meant baby was squished by my boobies. Plenty of fabric and easy to adjust to suit your shape. It's been on a loan to my tall, willowy friend, who is also big of nork and her extremely tall DH and they've loved it, really easy to wrap once you know what you are doing. Though I remember a rainy day in a car park trying not to get my ends wet. It's close to 3-4m of fabric.

SilentMammoth · 10/12/2012 21:58

Seconding a moby wrap. My 18 month old has only just ventured out.

Missmuffet28 · 10/12/2012 22:09

Oh kelle you do put things in the most wonderful of ways! I just let out a loud giggle at poosplosion (a little scenario played through in my mind!) and the term of big norks hehe!! I am of medium height 5'7 with G norks so this sling sounds like it may be worth a look into if babas tend to get suffocated by boobs I guess!

Did any one hear from jaqueline? I hope her day went ok!

lili86 · 10/12/2012 22:22

Just checking in! Glad you are holding on Mama. Sayinga prayer for you.

Had our scan today! So amazing!! We are having a girl! Still hasnt sunk in that i will have one of each.Smile

Cocochops · 10/12/2012 22:45

Thread is busy I can't keep up!
Just had a quick skim and

wishful when we had our 20 week scan for DD1 the sonographer referred to the baby as a he his heart etc So I wouldn't read too much into it and think they may say 'he' so they don't say 'it'.

mama glad you are hanging in there

Slings we had a baby bjorn which i used quite a lot outside the house and found the support good for walking. Now expecting dc2 I envisage I might use the sling a lot more in the house to keep hands free to play with dd1 etc so maybe a wrap one might be better? Watching with interest

I will have a think about useful list and post later.
Night all

Trishstar · 10/12/2012 22:55

Ladies just felt my first proper kicks! Not just flutters.

Was lying in bed reading when I felt it, so strange! Hopefully OH will feel it soon too.

21+6 Smile

Missmuffet28 · 10/12/2012 23:41

Congrats on scan lilli!

And yay for the kicks trish!!

bunnygirl80 · 11/12/2012 04:11

Glad to hear you're hanging in there mama

Great to hear what everyone found useful. Here's my contribution:
Stuff that's good to get before baby arrives:

  1. Bottles, sterilizer, breast pump/formula. I had major problems with latching DS on when my milk came in and couldn't feed at all for a while. For us if we'd had no bottles he'd have gone hungry until we could have bought some. Typically it all happened at 2am so not ideal shopping for bottles time, so at least was able to keep him fed till the lactation consultant came out to us in the morning
  2. Muslins. DS was never that sicky but I used them for swaddling until he was nearly 5 months and also used them for keeping the sun off him in the pram
  3. Lasinoh. Essential to save your nipples!

Stuff that you can get when you feel you need it:

  1. Baby monitor. I didn't let DS out of my sight till he was about 2 months old Blush.
  2. Baby clothes beyond a few baby gros. We didnt get much at all until DS was born and we knew what size he needed. He wasn't a particularly sicky/poosplosiony baby so he'd wear the same thing for days

Pointless stuff!

  1. Baby bath. We just used the kitchen sink then the big bath. I did have something called a bath dam which fits across a big bath so you don't have to fill the whole thing with water
2 .Room thermometer. Our baby monitor had one anyway, but it's pretty easy to tell if its hot or cold!

Thanks for all the advice on baby essentials [adds sling and large quantity of muslins to shopping list]

I'm feeling a little down about work at the moment. Just been told I'm reporting to a different manager who is based in the US and wants weekly catch ups. I feel like the pressure of work is going to increase just when I don't need it to. Wish we could afford for me not to go back after baby arrives but I am the main earner so not an option. Oh well, maybe it won't be as bad as I think.

Congratulations on your scan lili86! That's lovely news.

Fluffeh · 11/12/2012 08:28

Aww congratulations lili !
Regarding slings, I really wanted a traditional lay down type for when he/she is tiny. Is it possible to create that with a wrap style sling?
I'm blind so was hoping to get a sling to carry baby around outside then i can still use my cane (or if its sorted in time, a guide dog). But I didn't think it was good for newborns to be in the sitting position for rio long?
My DP can push the pram when he's with us but I have idealistic thoughts of long walks just means baby :).

itsaruddygame · 11/12/2012 08:35

Everything crossed for mama that Alexander stays put for a bit longer.

Great reading all the recommendations - so far I have a few baby grows and muslins and that's about it! I have chosen all the big items though so will hit the January sales.

Teapig I hear you re: work. I am under a lot of pressure at the moment and it could not be worse timing. It looks like Christmas is not going to be the relaxing break I was hoping for and I have had a few sleepless nights. I havent had time off since end of Aug/early Sep and i could kill for a week off. It is a family business so when the brown stuff hits the fan there is no escape! Here's hoping things get a bit easier : )

usernamegoeshere · 11/12/2012 12:32

gah, I am such a moody cow. I can't help myself. Am behaving like a precious 16 yr old who sulks if her boyfriend doesn't give her 100% of his attention.

Thing is, I am fully aware I am doing it & am literally full of hate of myself for it, yet I can't seem to stop. I really hope this is just a phase.

Fluffeh, it must be so much harder to prepare when blind, I hope you have loads of support.

But yey Trish!!

& good luck Faith for scan today. No word from JH yet?
22+4

OComeAllYeFaithBaby · 11/12/2012 12:36

fluffeh I'm curious, how do you MN? Does it speak it out for you?

I'm so achey today! Not sure why?! Eek only 3 hours til the scan - thanks username! Xmas Grin

Woo hoo 21+0!

growyourown77 · 11/12/2012 12:45

good luck for scan, faith. i'm 21 weeks today too! feeling like the right side of it now and on the home straight. enjoy your scan and ask for some detailed pic - ours are great!

Ollibobs · 11/12/2012 12:53

Just a quick message to say that it looks like M&S online is having 20pc off on baby wear. Can't tell how long it's going to last, but I seem to remember someone posting links for lovely M&S baby grows.

jj247 · 11/12/2012 12:58

fab news mama, hope Alexander keeps hanging on in there a while longer too, but brilliant to know you got to 24 weeks!

Yay trish too, must feel absolutely wonderful.

user my moods are all over the place too, from petulant teenager to blubbering mess, I'm hoping it is a passing phase or I've no chance of getting through the Christmas movie season and I think DPs patience will wear thin after 5 months of it!

21 weeks today too! Grin

growyourown77 · 11/12/2012 14:14

M&S baby clothes sale link

Fluffeh · 11/12/2012 16:39

I hope them&s sale is still on Thursday after my scan, I want pink or blue instead of cream :). Thanks for the link grow!
I'm inundated with family support, honestly everyone is already fussing around me I dread to think what they'll be like when the baby's here haha.
Yeah Faith I have a screen reader on my laptop and VoiceOver on my phone. I tend to use my phone more as it corrects most of my awful spelling mistakes too. :D.
It's taken me quite a few years to decide to have a baby, I've always worried about what other people would think and how much of an impact having a blind mum would have on a child growing up. But last year I met the most amazing woman who is deaf blind and a single mum and a fantastic one at that.
I figured if I could be half as good at parenthood as she is then it was worth a try.
Also my partner is a fantastic support and has two older teenagers already so knows what's coming.
I do get the odd unkind comment but that's more other people's problem than mine :).
