I was going to ask the same question, do i need a breast pump if i'm not going back to work quickly? I can see it would be nice to let DP do some feeds, but if its going to take an hour to express enough milk is it really feasible?

OP posts:
BuntyCollocks · 12/10/2012 07:58

Re breast pumps - if you plan to express an odd bottle, it's prob best to get a manual. That said, it took me half an hour with an electric to get 7 oz, so god knows how long that would have taken with a manual pump.

I think they're a good back up, especially if you do end up having supply issues, as you can pump to bring up supply between baby's feeds. Not an essential, but definitely good to have if you can afford it

Oh, and manuals are SORE on the hands.

I pumped on the odd occasion we had a night out or away, to bring my supply up (DS had a severe tongue tie that was missed for 6 weeks, and between that and previous breast surgery, it knackered my supply), and so I had a freezer stash in case we did end up having an unseen night out.

Pascha · 12/10/2012 08:21

I wouldn't get a pump unless you know you need one. I only got one last time because DS just wouldn't latch on at most attempts for days. He only 'got it' on about 7 and then went great guns from there. Because I was expressing to keep my supply going it just got into a habit to express once a day and DH gave that to him in the evening while I had my bath. I wouldn't have got into a routine of it if DS had fed easily straight away.

28 week appointment at 9am. Blood test ahoy! Trying to muster up the enthusiasm to wee into my little pot right now...

happyhow · 12/10/2012 12:13

Staying at my in-laws for a bit as we are dog sitting while they are on holiday. Hubby failed to mention when the hot water would go off so I got a cold shower this morning... To say I was less than impressed would be an understatement.... On a brighter note, my hair is very soft and shiny today after being washed in cold water!!!

Birdies · 12/10/2012 12:30

Just had my 28 week apmt and anti d jab. Midwife was in such a rush she could barely get her words out fast enough. Oh well, all is fine so that's the main thing. Babba is head down but apparently can still move again so I don't think it's too important at this stage. Have just booked flu and wc jabs as she was very definite about needing them (and with winter babies it's even more important). Neither contains a live vaccine which is reassuring and you can have both at the same time.

I would recommend the Medela Swing pump too. Best thing is to order it from amazon a bit nearer the time and I think you then have ages to return it if its unopened (just check first obviously!). So it's there if you need it, and if not, just set a reminder for yourself to return it. I wouldn't want to be without one in the middle of the night if I was struggling as I used it quite a bit last time.

Pascha · 12/10/2012 12:44

Shock happy I would not be impressed by that!

Widget is sitting up! Hoorah Hmm heartbeat at the top of my bump. I am not surprised, DS was breech from about this time until he was turned. This one does move around a lot more than he did so hopefully he will settle upside down soon. Had bloods taken and appointment booked for 3 weeks time, booked in on the same day for flu & whooping cough jabs as well. DS behaved impeccably throughout the appointment, Fiona (midwife) was very taken with him. I can see how she ends up late at the end of every clinic, she chats away with any kiddies happily til mummy gets up and shepherds them out of the door.

salt1 · 12/10/2012 14:33

has anyone been measured yet by midwife? i am really struggling to get all this percentile stuff, am bloody crap at maths, anyone have a clue x

AppleCrumples · 12/10/2012 14:36

Hi all glad to hear 28 week appointments going well!

Have decided to get wc jab as it seems riskier to leave it especially with 3 school age kids bringing their germs home with them!

Is anyone elses baby really active? Mini apple is really wriggly especially when I'm trying to sleep. Not even kicks it properly wrggles around! Bit nervous as ds2 was pretty active when I was pregnant and he is quite frankly nuts ( but fun)!

Just enjoying a quiet clean house before I have to
pick up dcs x

mrsbugsywugsy · 12/10/2012 14:44

well I was all set to get my flu jab tomorrow, but have just had a message from them saying that they have no supplies till 3rd November! Does anyone know if I can get it somewhere else, eg directly from the midwife?

Birdies · 12/10/2012 16:22

bugsy it's worth checking but I bet the midwives can't do it as the GP's will have been given the funding for it. If you don't mind paying you can get one privately from some Boots stores and also Bupa (for about £12.50)

pmgkt · 12/10/2012 17:30

My flu jab has been delayed by 5 weeks she to supplies

I wouldn't bother with electric pump unless you know you'll use it. Maybe research what you would buy but send someone else out for it if you need it.

mrsbugsywugsy · 12/10/2012 18:21

Oh that's interesting pmgkt, so it's not just my area. I can't decide whether I would be overreacting by paying to get it done privately, I guess I'm not really sure how big the risks are. I work at a University and the students have just started back, so this is prime time for nasty bugs going around.

I've been looking at maternity leave today. We are hoping to transfer some of my leave to DP (although not sure how much yet) - is anyone else?

salt the midwife measured my bump at my 24 week appointment earlier this week, she just said it was 'fine' and didn't write anything in my notes, so I've no idea what the measurement was.

Apple mine is also very active, the midwife even wrote it on my notes as she wouldn't keep still to have her heartbeat measured! Please tell me this doesn't mean a hyperactive toddler? Grin

PricklyPickle · 12/10/2012 19:08

Salt I've had my bump measured at my 26w and 28w midwife appointment now, and it was 26cm at the 26 week one and 28cm at the 28 week one. Apparently that's about right, it should be the same number of cm as you are weeks, as with all of this pregnancy lark its not an exact science, if the midwife doesn't mention it then it must be fine.

OP posts:
Pascha · 12/10/2012 19:22

My midwife measured mine for the first time today at the 28 week appointment and she said it was bang on. I think they only get concerned if the measurement is more than +/-3cm from the number of weeks you are.

AppleCrumples · 12/10/2012 19:41

Mrsbugsy he has a lot of energy and NEVER sits still but he also sleeps well and was a really happy easy baby! He is actually easier to deal with as all he ever really needed was food and an open space to run around in! He's nearly 7 now and all that energy now goes into being the best at everything at school - he's very competitve! Seriously he's mad but lovely ;)

knuckingfackered · 12/10/2012 19:49

manual breast pump was shite, I was considering an electric but it sounds just as laborious.

If you dont get one I would at least invest in ' nipple shields' as by week 2-3 you will be dead sore (ended up in paediatric a+e with DD who vommed loads of blood, turns out mine!).
The shields were amazing and meant I could still feed her but the nipple wasn't getting the direct contact, rough treatment and could heal.
And lansinoh gunk tube.

bealos · 12/10/2012 20:59

Which bit do they measure from and to, on the bump? Am going to measure myself!

Berniebennett · 12/10/2012 21:27

I don't know of I should feel blessed or worried....

Bump is not massively active yet (27 +1) that I can feel - I only tend to feel him when I'm sat still for a whole and when I'm lying on my side. But at very appointment he's moving all the time, at the 20 weeks scan we had to go back as he was wiggling so much they couldn't get all the measurements and last week they struggled with the heartbeat (gives me a heart attack everytime) because he was moving. I think because I have an anterior high lying placenta I get a lot of movements cushioned?

No doubt the second I post this though I'll be up all nights with his movement 😊. Always the way

LynseyPynsey · 12/10/2012 22:57

Hi new member! Only just found out I'm pregnant, due on the 21/01/2013. Massive shock to say the least!

How it are your bumps? I literally don't look pregnant and have only gained about 2lbs, measurements were fine though (HC: 226mm, AC: 198mm..) so I guess I shouldn't be worrying?

I'm only 19 so I guess I'm the baby of the group! Could I be added to the list?

DC1, EDD 21/01/2013, don't know the gender as of right now, we haven't decided whether or not we want to know yet.

Pascha · 12/10/2012 22:57

From the pubic bone to the top of your uterus using a fabric measure. Don't use a builders steel tape Grin

PricklyPickle · 13/10/2012 08:14

Hello Linsey congratulations! What a suprise to find out this far along. Yes i think you're the baby of the group, although only for 3 more months, then this place will be brimming over with babies! I'm quite Envy you've only put on 2lbs, i look like a human beach ball and there's no way i'm getting on any scales.

At my last midwife appointment i had a different midwife to my usual one, and to measure the bump height she started of by putting the tape measure right in the top of my fanjo, it came as quite a shock Shock

Bunny222 · 13/10/2012 09:29

Hi all. SPD symptoms are a bit worse, so uncomfortable to turn over in bed, and getting up from sitting is sore, left hip feels v wobbly until I get going. Not ideal for those nighttime visits to the loo when half asleep! Am hoping the physio referral comes through soon!

The squirty boob comments really made me laugh. Hadn't even thought about breast pumps, hope to breast feed but should you get one in anyway?

Am 25+4 now, feeling lots or wriggles, and now seeing the skin move when I put the shower head where bump is! He/she must like the warm water. Didn't think I'd be able to see movement yet. Managed to pick up a few nursery bits in the Mamas&Papas sale, so DHs job for the weekend is clearing that room and starting painting. Eck!

birdies the sainsburys A line style coat was about £35, got it during their 25% sale.

Birdies · 13/10/2012 10:22

Thanks bunny

bernie don't worry that's what I had with DD1 and now my placenta is at the back I get loads more movements. It's a totally different experience with an anterior placenta - all movements are muffled. And even when they're not, it's very easy not to notice them when you're up and about.

Welcome linsey wow that's amazing! What made you realise you we're pregnant in the end?

bugsy there isn't a flu outbreak yet but it does take a few weeks to get immunity. Risks are prob low, but depends how much you will worry. I'm not having mine til next Friday which isn't that far off November either but being a bit of a worrier, if I had to wait any longer I would just get a private one to save me the stress. I'm sure others would be quite happy to wait though, so it's ust a personal choice.

Pascha · 13/10/2012 10:41

Dont go out and buy a breast pump til you know you need one. They are in Boots and Argos so unless you live in the outer hebrides or the moon you will be able to pick one up same day.

AppleCrumples · 13/10/2012 11:30

Lynsey congrats and welcome! What a shock that must have been! How did you find out? My SIL went to dr a few weeks ago witg stomach pain and a scan showed she was 17 weeks pregnant! Am jealous as I had just spent nearly 4 months with my head down the toilet plus a trip to hospital for rehydration!

Hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well!

Hope everyone else is ok today and enjoying the weekend x
