Hi All,

I'm 21 weeks 6 days .I'm suffering really bad with heart burn. I've tried Rennie and sipping milk but nothing seems to ease it.
Anyone else suffering/suffered any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance x

Gallons of milk was the only thing that helped, although I did swig vast quantities of gaviscon too. Even water gave me heartburn.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 13:09

I used to chug a lot of skim milk.

Also used gaviscon - the normal gaviscon is safe in pregnancy.

I heard almonds, with the skins on, are meant to help.

Also, avoid lying down soon after food, and, if you can, elevate the head of your bed a bit.

I really suffered with this, particularly with DS1. It does pass.

Lottielou · 08/02/2006 13:10

hmmm, gaviscon - haven't tried that.Thanks x

I would get to your GP. I had terrible heartburn and the only thing that worked was Gavison Advance Liquid. You can get it on prescription so its free. I got through at least 10 giant bottles when PG. I used to carry it everywhere and swig it from the bottle .

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 13:23

a friend is prone to heartburn through all her pregnancies (she is on number 3 now) - she almost always had gaviscon in her hand ! She got it on prescription through the midwife I think.

Chloe55 · 08/02/2006 13:24

Yep Gaviscon does the trick for me too - I also have a big mug of Horlicks made with milk 1/2hour or so before bed which tends to help. Oh and always carry a packet of refreshers (the little chalky sweets), they taste nicer than indigestion tablets and seem to help me too.

Highlander · 08/02/2006 15:57

those Gaviscon frothy things are the DBs.

krabbiepatty · 08/02/2006 16:08

Chewable rennies are quite palatable

me23 · 08/02/2006 16:30

I was the same mandymac large gaviscon bottles on prescription! I feel for you lottielou it really is horribe. I got told it meant my baby had lots of hair old wives tale. It was true in my case though dd came out with loads of black hair.
hope you find something that works for you.

Lottielou · 08/02/2006 16:38

Thank you all, very much appreciated.
Have an appt with my m/wife tomo so will get her to prescribe some gavison and give that a go.

I am finding Gaviscon not really working any more. Time to move onto the advanced stuff.

Had terrible heartburn with DS and he was pretty much bald when born.

PotPourri · 15/02/2006 16:59

Hi Lottie lou. Not got any more advice for you, I just wanted to sympathise. I am 24 weeks and suffering terribly with heartburn. I swig gaviscon (on prescription) from the bottle all day partically adn rennies or remegel chewable are ok. I need to see the doctor though as it is getting beyond a joke and my throat feels like it is being seared from top to bottom.

You should also avoid - spicy food, greasy food, choclate (alot of fat in that) or other food with lots of fat - so that would probably apply to garlic bread and the like as there is lots of butter. And I am practically upright now in bed, with about a million pillows, just so that gravity is holding some of it at bay. Also, if you can, avoid drinking large amounts of water in one go as that comes back up your throat quite easily. And last time I was pregnant, I found that a tiny bit of bicarb in water worked quite well - although don't take this if you are overweight, or should be cutting out sodium/salt, or have alot of water retention - heee sounds like pregnancy that list!

Hope you find a solution (and if you do, would appreciate you sharing any miracle cures as I share your frustration!)

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/02/2006 16:58

I heard melon was supposed to help (didn't help me, but you could give it a try)
I was given Maalox by my GP and that helps. Went through many many bottles! and it's OTC.

Enid · 16/02/2006 17:03

GAVISCON ADVANCE
GAVISCON ADVANCE

It is the utter dogs bolleaux

and the only thing that works chez Enid (currently 30 weeks and now with horrendous heartburn)

I have a bottle by the bed, on the table near the sofa, in my handbag and I swig a bit whenever I have eaten anything.

Normal Gaviscon is pants. The gp will only prescribe normal Gaviscon so resigned to spending a fortune

krabbiepatty · 16/02/2006 17:18

Eating v small amounts at a time especially at night is goood
Bread is your enemy
Rice is your friend
I find eating ice helps but that may just be me...

Enid · 16/02/2006 17:37

yes agree

bread is the enemy

toast to be shunned
sandwiches to be cast out

horlicks and rice to be welcomed in and given a foot massage

izzybiz · 17/02/2006 10:23

chewable gaviscon tablets, they are mank, nearly made me gag every time but they really work.
its the sign of a hairy baby you know.

Enid · 17/02/2006 10:25

yes have had two very hairy babies

third is obv going to be the same

bubbly1973 · 18/02/2006 21:13

maybe its changed or maybe it depends where you live, but my gp prescribes only gaviscon advance, he said they dont prescribe the normal gaviscon no more, which i used to have when i had ds.

im like you on the g/advance enid, i got it everywhere and take it everywhere! water even gives me heartburn! but if it wasnt for gaviscon i dont know how i would cope, its the best thing ever!

ntt · 18/02/2006 21:15

I had this when pg too. Avoid wheat - bread in particular.

Nightynight · 18/02/2006 21:39

another vote here for swigging gaviscon - the best flavour in the world

Pixiefish · 18/02/2006 21:41

gaviscon liquid and keep bottle next to bed

Marls001 · 11/03/2006 00:40

I took Nexium - it's considered safe in the States. Helped a great deal. And sleeping sitting up, though that's extremely uncomfortable. Sleeping on the right side is supposed to help heartburn, I've heard.

colditz · 11/03/2006 01:22

Don't eat

Toast
fried food
Tomatoes
Citrus anything
pastry
Stuff with pepper in
Melted cheese

the only thing I found to help was pints of ice cold full fat milk, and horlicks.

MummyPig · 11/03/2006 01:47

milk can make it better temporarily but might actually make it worse in the long run due to the fat and liquid staying in your stomach for a while.

I had terrible heartburn with ds1 and lived on Gaviscon but with ds2 heard some dietary advice similar to that below. I cut out spicy, acidic, fatty and processed foods and was far far better. But I did keep Rennies nearby just in case I overindulged. Far nicer than chewable Gaviscon which is disgusting.
