Congratulations sleighbells, lottie ,honey and mmm and families (and anyone else I've missed) on their new arrivals.
Sleighbells - we've had similar feeding issues with ds2. Sometimes he latches on really well, othertimes, he either won't for ages (will root around, but start crying, or will latch on for about a minute, come off, start rooting again, start crying again, repeat as necessary). He seems better at it today (sometimes still roots a bit, but eventually goes on), but we've been back up to the hospital for a check. He had newborn jaundice (hi pludolph), which has been noticable on his skin but thankfully hasn't needed treatment, but his bilirubin values are now coming down), and he's lost a little bit more weight than they are comfortable with (you're "allowed" 10%, but he's lost 10.something%, so that coupled with the jaundice means they're reviewing him every couple of days). They're questioning whether I'm producing enough milk, and have asked me to put him to the breast as often as he needs (but at least every 3 hours), then offer him ebm afterwards and see how much he takes. The paediatric registrar was also questioning whether I was actually producing any milk at all,but seeing as I've just expressed 35 ml from one breast in advance of his next feed and that in the last day or two he has been feeding well over the average 8 times a day (and for about 6 hours last night he was feeding at least every hour), I think if there had been a problem with my supply, his frequent feeds lately means that my supply will increase anyway. Plus he is definitely not dehydrated (they agree that other than the yellow tinge, which is fading, he is well, he is having lots of wet and dirty nappies (and demonstrated nicely at the hospital by peeing all over dh and the floor when he was being undressed to be weighed)).
Thanks for the links to the biological nurturing site msbauble - I have been trying more skin to skin as well to help things out (and because it's lovely), and we've been trying to catch his feeding cues (hands/sleeves in mouth, smacking his lips, etc.) whilst he is still calm.
