HELP, I need ideas for a present, what was the most useful present you received?

My Step Brother and his wife had a baby boy last night. Since he was born in the States his birthday will be yesterday but it was after midnight here so we're going to give him 2 birthdays.

He arrived 4 weeks early as his mummy had pre-eclampsia, poor thing, but he was 8lbs, so if he'd gone full term he wouldv'e been huge.

His name is Sean.

I need ideas for a pressie, something small as I'm chipping in for a big family present for his christening too. I thought about a small Taggies blanket, but I think she might have bought one already.

What was the most useful present your dc received?

I would say a grobag too, they are fab, I don't know how anyone manages without them.

Kindersurprise · 28/03/2008 19:45

I love the wooden dummy chains that we get here in Germany, I don't think I have seen them in UK. Here is a nice one for a boy.

We got a towel for DS (a normal one, not a hooded one) with his name stitched on it. It is really lovely and he still uses his towel.

I've been getting leather baby shoes like Daisy Roots for friends in Oz - I buy 6-12 months as that's when they'll get used & cheap to post. Absolutely gorgeous choice of designs and not v.expensive. I got some for ds2 and they were one of my best presents as they stayed on & kept feet warm plus looked cute.

LittleMissTickles · 29/03/2008 00:34

The little leather baby shoes are very popular and available everywhere in the USA. Grobags are very rare - great idea.

I've seen some lovely handknitted cashmere baby hats on Etsy for around US$40, and most of the sellers are American so can ship directly to the new mum.

meep · 29/03/2008 09:30

We got one of these bibs - great for when they start the full on drool stage!

A large fluffy towel and lovely luxurious bath goodies for me to remind me I am not just a mum now.

forkhandles · 29/03/2008 13:42

We were given a Baby Whoozitand DD1 played with it for ages, definitely a favourite toy.

lou222 · 29/03/2008 14:09

can someone please tell me what a grobag is ??

TurkeyLurkey · 29/03/2008 14:16

Grobags here

These were invaluable for me..stops them wriggling out of covers and getting cold in the night.

woodstock3 · 29/03/2008 14:20

i'll second the baby whoozit, it was the first thing ds looked at and he still liked it in the car up until about 9 months.
the best thing i got was a huge parcel of chocolate bars and kamillosan nipple cream but admit this wasnt for ds as such....the best present he had was a soft, washable fleece blanket big enough to play on/lie on as well as be wrapped up in etc. great for laying them down on on inlaws'/friends' friends when you take small baby on visits - ours was a champion sicker and it protected their carpets...

ExtraFancy · 29/03/2008 14:24

Photo frame?

One of the best things we got given was a Sleep Sheep to go on the side of the cot - DS (8mo) loves it and goes to sleep with in on every night

Here it is

Both ds and dd love/adore their kaloo comforters and still ahve them now!!

Second the grobags too!

lou222 · 29/03/2008 14:36

thanks turkey
first time mom to be so clueless about nearly everything!!

mom2latinoboys · 29/03/2008 15:21

Grobags are very common here, and fairly cheap too, so most moms already have one. If you do decide to get one and look online we call them sleep-sacks or sleep-blanket.

mom2latinoboys · 29/03/2008 15:22

Honestly as a new mom the best gift I got was diapers. With ds1 I had enough for a month an half. Also look at babiesrus.com

LoveMyGirls · 29/03/2008 15:27

bio oil?

Belgianchocolates · 29/03/2008 17:12

My ds(6) couldn't live without his 'Fafa', a toy elephant he got from my mums neighbour and he's got really attached to it. 6 years later it's still his best friend and comfort in times of trouble!
I suppose the best gift were hooded towels (though I ended up getting 5 of those) and big bibs from belgium. A size you don't find in the UK, they're big thick towelling ones that tie at the back and are great from 1st feed till older toddler.

chefswife · 29/03/2008 17:53

My friends just had a girl last week in Vancouver and seeing as how I am in London I thought the best gifts were fun things that were traditionally English for the baby. Useful things will be covered by those that live near by. I got a pair of baby Doc Martin?s, a traditional English Teddy Bear and a fun book from the author Leslie Patricelli that are available at Tate Modern.

ilovewashingnappies · 29/03/2008 21:42

Best pressnts:

Anything that crinkled
Mum pampering
personalised stuff
photo album

but my favourite was vouchers because I was DYING to shop for my new baby but everyone beat me to things I needed and am too stingy to spend real money. DH work snet us a voucher and it was so nice to be able to splurge

thursday · 29/03/2008 21:52

most unique thing i got was a lovely silver display box for my sons birth certificate.

vouchers were a great help tbh...not very exciting to buy for you but great to receive.

also something personalised with date of birth etc on is always special (as long as its nothing too tacky of course!)

Bewilderbeast · 29/03/2008 22:05

A neighbour of my parents gave us baby wipes and prem baby nappies, it wasn't exciting but it was by far the most useful, and in a way thoughtful, gift that we were given.

luvaduck · 29/03/2008 23:24

these are cute and quite reasonable"
