ARE YOU STILL HAPPY WITH THE NAME YOU CHOSE?

DD is now 9 weeks old and I'm really not sure about the name we've given her. It took three weeks to come up with a name and I felt very hormonal, disorganised and hassled at the time and enormous pressure from everyone to name her. We eventually chose a long name which can be shortened a variety of ways, but I'm increasingly unsure about it in all it's options.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? might it grow on me, or should I change it now before she learns it herself. How easy is it to change their name once registered? Does anyone have any suggestions, what I really wanted was a two syllable name ending in 'a'; like anna, or emma etc??

What have you chosen, if you don't mind me asking? Can you put your finger on exactly why you aren't sure about it?

collision · 29/03/2006 22:19

Mmm. difficult one.

There have been threads on this before and Im sure that someone will come on who has been through this.

I love both my boys' names but would have called them Annabel if they had been girls and am not sure if I like that now! Not that that helps you.

couldnt you call her Emma anyway?

jollymum · 29/03/2006 22:20

You can change a name up to 1 year, I think. Look at her and see what she suits, I agreed to my dd's name because it suited her at the time and my Dh wanted another, so we compirimised. Now she's just "MOO" because that's her down to the ground. Last name "MOO", first name varies. Grumpy, Moody, miserable, moomoo.Smile

I like my DS's names, but probably wouldn't choose either of them now, as both names seem to have got very common.

dyzzidi · 29/03/2006 22:22

My dd is 14 weeks old and I am fairly ok with her name now but really if I am being honest its only the last couple of weeks when i am beginning to think it 'suits' her. I think the more their personality shows the easier a name become IYKWIM.

CountessDracula · 29/03/2006 22:23

oh blimey, I can't think of anything i like any better and i feel like i'm pulling my hair out. why do you have to make this huge decision at the time in your life when you are totally knackered and haven't even got to know baby yet???Sad

You can call her whatever you like, regardless of her registered name! :)

I was going to call my ds Julia if he'd been a girl; still like it (and it ends in "a")!

Whatever her name, it will become "her" in time. When I first heard the name my best friend chose for her first daughter 13 years ago, I thought "ooh I don't like that" but now when I hear it / think of her it's just her - not the name. Hope that makes sense :o

edam · 29/03/2006 22:41

agree with Bushy, names you aren't fond of grow on you anyway as you get to know the person ... but it may be different if you gave them the damn name in the first place, of course. Still happy with ds's, fortunately, is definitely him.

Is it China where they give babies 'milk' names and don't sort out the formal name for adult life until later? Would be very handy to take the pressure off...

bushytail · 29/03/2006 22:49

amber5, change her name back to your niece's middle name... she's your child and you can call her what you like! Unless there's already a prob with your relationship with your brother, he (and his wife/partner) will get over it! It's more important that you are happy with your child's name :)

JoolsToo · 29/03/2006 22:51

yes and more to the point my 3 like the names I gave them

I loved (and still do) 3 of our dds names. dd3 however, was named under the influence of drugs post-labour...

but dd3's name is now my favourite name of the four. You may find it will grow on you, and grown with dd.

myturn · 29/03/2006 23:05

and GROW with...

MrsSpoon · 29/03/2006 23:12

I'm still happy with both my DSs' names. DS1's name however I didn't realise would be such a problem with people asking how to spell it, where it comes from etc, IMO it's a perfectly normal (although fairly seldom used) Scottish name. DS2's name was on the shortlist for DS1 so seemed a natural consideration for DS2, the only problem being that I didn't realise quite how common the name had become recently, after telling the midwife his name her first comment was "not another one".

spidermama · 29/03/2006 23:13

Change it now. It only gets harder.

collision · 29/03/2006 23:14

hi Mrs S!

collision · 29/03/2006 23:15

Have you changed your son's name to Alice yet SpiderMama? Wink

myturn · 29/03/2006 23:15

MrsSpoon, both your sons' names are lovely.

myturn · 29/03/2006 23:16
