I kept my father's fleece jacket and i wear it gardening.
I got my love of politics from him and days like today, when there's a big political story in Ireland, I'd love to be able to ring him.
One one my sons got his sense of humour and turn of phrase.

Queen (the band)
World snooker championships
Home brew
Bournville chocolate

He died at 54. I was 26. Half my life without him.

To add to my earlier post Johnny Cash reminds me of my dad. He really enjoyed listening to him and we played The Highway Man at his funeral because he said many years ago that he wanted it. To this day, i can't listen to it. Dad has a really strong, close relationship with my son and was always so proud of him. Our son has done and achieved so many things since dad passed and I know he would be absolutely bursting with pride. I wish i could have just one more day with my wonderful dad.

I saw a pencil that had been sharpened with a knife and it brought my father back to me momentarily. The smell of wood glue always does it as well. Green men in churches.

I was feeling particularly sad about a year after he died when I discovered the Detectorists series. It really reminded me of him and the relationships he had with his friends and their shared obsessive hobbies (not metal detecting but the principle was the same). It was a great comfort and spoke to me of how worthwhile his life had been, even though he had not achieved fame or high office in any way! But he had enjoyed family life and had many friends and his interests which were all consuming and gave him so much pleasure.

I forgot the snooker. I remember being allowed to stay up late and watch the world championship final with him

The Match of the Day music.
The smell of oil and Swarfega (he was a mechanic).
When I'm able to do some DIY or fix my bike because he taught me how to do it.
That moment when you go into a church porch and it's still, quiet and smells of dust and flowers so reminds me of the moment on my wedding day when he and I were waiting in the church porch. Just us, arms linked. Then the doors opening, the clock chiming, Hear Come The Bride on the organ and in we went.

My adult son. He has his grandad's gait and so many of his mannerisms even though he was just 6 when my dad died

The smell of workshops, he was a mechanic. Extra strong mints, had them in every pocket.
Checked shirts. Coal tar soap.
Creme eggs, yorkie bars, mr Kipling cherry bakewells, haven't eaten one since.
He was 52, I was 23. Sometimes it feels unbearable that I'll never speak to him again, never hug him. He used to lift me off the floor with his hugs.
