Thought of another one - I took a lot of his socks. I've been wearing them over my own socks all winter as I have quite cold feet. Most useful, and every morning I think of him when I take them out of the drawer.

Ffswtf · 20/03/2024 18:08

Old spice
Big hands
Garlic
Spring
Gaelic
Tom and Jerry cartoons, my lovely Dad would watch them with me and laugh as much as me, he truly was my best friend Dad. Sending much love to all those missing a loved one 💐

Pearlyclouds · 20/03/2024 18:09

Herons
Steam trains
Cigarette smoke
Have I Got News For You
Stations
Those big briefcases with the locks on
Yorkshire flat caps
Private Eye
Stewart Lee
Red wine
Old Road atlases

Certain colour clothing - particularly loud colour socks!
Liquorice
Westerns
Certain songs and certain bands - Kings of Leon and Coldplay to name a couple
Whisky

He died after a long battle with Pancreatic cancer in 2017. He was one of the 'lucky' ones - living 5 years after diagnosis (his sister passed a few months after diagnosis, which is a lot more common with this nasty type of cancer)

I did the same! He's been gone 6 years but I still wear his socks🙂 not sure how they've lasted this long but they have!

When I clean the bathroom the smell always reminds me of when he took me swimming. We would go swimming while my mum would go window shopping in habitat and John lewis. Then we would have a "chippy lunch" (McDonalds). My mum would show my dad the cushion covers she liked and then, after what felt like about nine hours we would go to either whsmith or the early learning centre.

It’s 25 years this year since we lost Dad and the smell of tomatoes on the vine still makes me blub. He used to bring them in from the greenhouse.

Pearlyclouds · 20/03/2024 18:19

I've still got all my dad's socks! And many of his tshirts...
He was always getting cross at me for borrowing his tshirts when I was a teenager..
I miss him. He was a wonderful man.
I still firmly bbelieved he knew everything about everything and could fix anything

Mine did know huge amounts and could fix most things.

I loved that. Loved him.

His lawn rake, and some old plant pots. He died in 1976 and I still have those, and some other gardening things of his too.

HesterPrincess · 20/03/2024 18:44

The smell of cold tar soap - Dad used it for years

The Daily Mail in print - he got one every day and did the crossword

Sausage rolls and scotch eggs on the deli counter in the supermarket (he always made me get him one of each as a treat).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2024 19:07

Country music
Cricket
F1
Tobacco
Rum
Lifebouy/coal tar soaps
Euthymol toothpaste (not sure if you can still get it)

I recently found a whipped soap from Sassy Scents called Tobacco and Vanilla and it definitely reminds me of Dad as there's a subtle tobacco smell. It's being discontinued so I've stocked up.

YewandOak · 20/03/2024 19:07

Old Spice aftershave
The Tigger song,he used to dance round the supermarket singing it.
Ginger Nut biscuits with a cup of milky tea.
The Shadows, especially Apache which was his favourite,it's been the ringtone on my phone for years.
A real, proper bear hug,he gave the sort of hugs that made you feel loved, safe and warm.

It's been two years but I'm still not used to going into where he worked and knowing I won't see him and get one of his gorgeous smiles where his face lit up at seeing one of his children.

Fluffy40 · 20/03/2024 19:08

Roses, runner beans, train sets

FinallyHere · 20/03/2024 19:09

Rhubarb
Logical thinking
Quiet enjoyment of absurdities

much missed since 2012

MaMisled · 20/03/2024 19:10

My lovely son.
Birdsong.
Handknitted mens cardigans.

Hermoinestrousers · 20/03/2024 19:26

Bay rum (a hair tonic thing)
Bright coloured socks
Bees

There are also things I still find quite hard - like the programme Homes Under the Hammer. We watched it pretty much every day during his illness and that is still a bit much for me despite it being 6 years ago now

As others have mentioned, the hardest part is when you see something and think you must call and tell dad. That and not being able to share some really big things that my dad would have been chuffed to bits with are really hard to cope with.

redastherose · 20/03/2024 19:31

I walk to work along the quayside with all the yachts at their moorings and it always reminds me of my dad because he was in the merchant navy and had a catamaran when he retired and loved the sea.

Flyhigher · 20/03/2024 19:31

Not being able to ring him is the worst. Not being able to smell him again is the second worst.

Snooker on the TV - he loved it
Walking past skips - he loved rescuing things and fixing things ( he was an engineer) I always look and if there is something good I think dad would have had that.
The Repair Shop- he would have loved that programme and it reminds me so much of him bending over his work table.
Castles - he inspired my love of history
❤️
