Hi everyone
Thank you for so much help and such kind words x

That's good to hear Trin.

I've got to go rescue a mummy blackbird from my garden eek!
I didn't see her perched on the pot behind the kitchen door when I opened it, and she bashed her wing on the door when she flew awaySad
She has a nest full of babies in next door's ivy.
She scuttled a bit and tried to fly but couldn't get high enough, so has been perched on top of a stone Buddha head at the back of the flower bed for 2 hours!

I hoped she'd recover from the shock and gain a bit of strength, but I can't bear the idea of her being there all night.

Mouseface · 13/06/2013 20:45

:) xx

You okay BBB? that must have been scary! Our next door neighbour was hammering on the door the other day, baby Jackdaw was stuck in his chimney, DH and he managed to get him out and take him to the nearest vet, who sent him off to the rescue centre nearest to us.

Bird is okay.

Trin - ((((HUGS)))) right back at you, lots of love and thank you for posting sweetie xxx

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 14/06/2013 00:51

When I got up close I realised it was a fledgling, a really big one, and it wasn't injured, just was learning to fly.

It really didn't want to be caught, and the mum and dad appeared with worms for it so we scuttled back inside to let them get on with it.

left the stepladder to hopefully give it a leg up, it did sit on it for a while and then was gone, hopefully the right side of the fence. think we may get repeat performances as the nests are in the ivy next door, where the very new neighbours have a dog. Neighbours the other side of us have cats, so we are the safe haven Grin

And if that saga didn't put you to sleep, nothing will!
Only scared of hurting it, am quite used to picking up birds, mice, voles, moles, grass snakes, toads.

Spiders, not so much!

TrinityRhino · 14/06/2013 07:55

aww thats so sweet. hope its ok. loving that you gave it a ladder Grin

I think it spent the night in my big pot of sweetpeas!
I noticed because his dad arrived with a worm, very cute. Smile

In the house I grew up we had a big garden with apple trees in long grass down at the bottom. There was a bluetit nest box on one of the trees that got used nearly every year, and you could tell when they were going to fledge because all the babies would be going 'pee pee pee pee paa?' at the hole and you could see heads jostling for position. However, they normally fledged first thing in the morning, and if they missed the branches of the apple tree, they fell down into the grass which was wet with dew - then of course got their wings wet and had no chance of getting back up into the branches. So I would go and check that there were none on the ground, and pick them up and put them back in the tree if there were. They sometimes decided it was perfectly safe sitting on your finger and demanded food (from me) (but I left that to their parents!). It was amazing having such a tiny thing sitting on your finger - you could feel their feet holding on but the weight was so little that it really wasn't noticeable - sort of large feather weight!

We quite often had a nest of wrens fledging by the back door, and going out and seeing the tap with a miniature wren chick on it was lovely.

Then there were the rooks - nearby rookery - but you mainly noticed the noise from those!

Hope its a bit brighter for you today Trin - have you got any plans for the weekend? How is the chicken run doing?

TrinityRhino · 14/06/2013 11:06

chicken run is shaping up nicely, got friends coming over to finish it up this morning

got my pet gardener here as well to carry on with making my steptoes yard into more of a garden Grin

its a little bit windy and tiny spots of rain but its trying to be sunny too.

I realised I had fallen off my tablets again so yesterday and today I've taken them

we're on the way back up Smile

hugs to all,

love the story of you saving tiny birds out of the dewy grass

we have swallows nesting in the garage which come back every year

they make a right royal mess but I luffs them Grin

Glad your doing ok trin. X

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 14/06/2013 16:44

Oh Trin, you must keep up with your tablets lovely, glad to hear you're feeling better.
Great to get the garden sorted, specially if you don't have to do it Grin

I love swallows, so graceful.
Baby blackbird fluttered over the fence and scuttled off through the ivy Smile Are you going to get some more chickens?

FX we all get a sunny week-end.

PacificDogwood · 15/06/2013 07:57

Loving all your bird stories Grin - we have bluetits most years in the same hole of a birch in our garden.
I have sat and watched them being fed and then eventually fleeing the next many times.

Trininty, well done for remembering your meds - put them next to your toothbrush or somewhere you'll trip over them? I know I'd struggle to take something religiously...

Your garden sounds fab. And with chicken run Envy... And the sea - lovely.

Have a Good Day today x.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/06/2013 16:32

Aw, you're all so lovely!

Well you get more chickens Trin once the run is done? I wouldn't have any idea where chickens come from (except eggs obviously!)

Good work with your meds - keep those ticking over to avoid overcomplicating things.

Very windy here today and there's a silly bumble bee keeps flying into our patio windows - he must have very poor sight as the windows certainly aren't that clean!

MelodyBaker · 16/06/2013 06:54

Hope your okay today Trin. I'm thinking of you and the girls. So sorry x

Mouseface · 16/06/2013 11:18

Hey Trin - can you set a daily alarm on your phone for your meds? Or as PDog says, put them somewhere so bloomin' obvious that you'll fall over them.

You know that they take a while to build back up again in your system. xx

How are you feeling today? How are the girls? Sad

I woke thinking of you all, snuggled in that huge bed, safe, warm and together. I know that there's a huge gap, a massive hole that is glaring at you right know but it will get smaller.

You'll fill it with happy memories and nice things, you'll put things in there to keep them safe, days out, nights in, things that are important to you all.... it'll soon start to shrink my lovely. :) xxx

We have The Lion King on here, again! Nemo is dancing around the lounge, wiggling his little bottom in time to Hakuna Matata, I can't believe he is about to face his last few weeks at preschool.

He's so diddy :)

Squidges to you all Trin, I hope that the sun is shining where you are today. xxx

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 16/06/2013 12:01

Hi Trin

I think of you pretty much every day and send you 'good vibes' :) But I just wanted to pop in today to send you and the girls really, really big hugs.

You are doing incredibly well - stay strong.

xxx

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 16/06/2013 13:12

Extra big hugs for you today Trin.

Hope you've got some sunny weather and sunny company x

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 16/06/2013 19:23

Your link made me jump out of my skin!

PacificDogwood · 16/06/2013 21:12

Was thinking of you and yours this morning and on and off all day today.

Garden success! Sounds a good weekend.

Have the girls got names yet? How many did you get - are they in reasonable condition or straight from the sheds?

We had a hen that fell off the back of a lorry and my violin teacher rescued her... She was ENORMOUS particularly compared to my tiny bantams. She used to have to duck for the smallest, top of the pecking order hen to peck her head - and even then the bantam had to jump up!. She didn't know what to do, could only eat out of a bowl to start with - didn't know how to aim at a single grain of corn... The day that she found out that you could eat grass we all had to start being careful where we walked. And she ate ALL the aubretia flowers that year. We eventually found her a home in an orchard with some larger hens and a cockerel as we were worried that she could kill one of ours if she got fed up with being at the bottom... She was called Dodo as she was white and was rather dim (compared to the bantams anyway).

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 17/06/2013 12:00

Brilliant news!

How many chickens did you get?

I'm going to my friend's house this afternoon to dog sit for her gorgeous black lab until Wed. pm. She lives near where I used to till we moved 3 years ago, lovely country village.

Just hope I can get online, eek!

Don't apologise sweetheart, I always take it as a good sign, that you're busy, if you don't post for a while.

PacificDogwood · 17/06/2013 16:46

Ah, Trinity, your garden sounds lovely - as does your gardener Grin. I need a secure garden before we can consider getting a dog and I have no idea where to start... no chickens though, I am not sure I'd cope.

This is your thread - you post when you want to or need to, not to keep us happy Wink.

mistlebrush, loved your chicken story.

TrinityRhino · 17/06/2013 17:00

we have nine little chooks now
they are so sweet Grin

OP posts:
BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 17/06/2013 18:26

Aw, did you get babies?

TrinityRhino · 17/06/2013 23:33

sorry no not babies they are just little cause chickens are little Grin

they are ex battery rescues

they have a lot of feathers missing and looked very sad for the first...5 mins, then they were fine and extra clucky and gorgeous

OP posts:
BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 18/06/2013 08:57

The feathers grow back quite quickly, they're like hair and fingernails.
Presuming the chickens left the rescue place mite-free.
Apparently you can encourage re-growth by feeding them scrambled egg!

Hope you have a good day today Smile
