I waited until I knew they were ready and wanted to. Was about 2 1/4 for the first three. DD4 is only 20m but is getting there.

It was very easy as it was clearly the right time for them each time.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/05/2010 21:21

DD potty trained herself at 3.4. We tried earlier and it just didn't work and we were both getting frustrated her because she wasn't interested and me because I thought she was being awkward.

Once she decided to do it, it took one pair of wet pants and that was it.

bumbums · 28/05/2010 21:25

I waited till both of us were ready for it. I started it just after my DS turned 3. I might have done it alot sooner but for the fact my DD was born just before his 2 birthday and its taken me a year to get to grips with having 2 children. As it turns out I probably should have left it another 3-4mths. He doesn't like to stop playing to go to toilet. I wonder if he was a little older he'd understand better and faster that its ok to take 2 mins to use the toilet!

notnowbernard · 28/05/2010 21:27

I didn't succeed...

They did. In their own time

DD1 - nightmare - bit like WMMC's dd by the sound of it

DD2 - ignored the issue - she said to me one day (about 2.5) "I want knickers today" and that was that. 1 accident on day 1, 1 on day 3 then done and dusted

Much better for them to initiate it, rather than 'train' them

Lynli · 28/05/2010 21:28

I has a major operation and couldn't deal with the potty training so had left it to 2 years 9 months. It took 24 hours to be out of nappies day and night. With the other two I had started at 20 months lots of accidents and mess. Definitely a fan of leaving it late.

Rollmops · 28/05/2010 21:29

DTs are 2.5 and my attempts have failed so far, they are not particularly interested. I was told by DT1 that:" Yes Mummy, I will go to potty.... but not today." and DT2 is adamant that:" Only girls go to potty."
Shall wait....

girliefriend · 28/05/2010 21:30

dd was 2yrs 4 months and it took 2 weeks before she was dry but another year before she would poo on the loo! In hindsight I think I could have left it a bit longer but usual story of being under pressure from my mum as app me and my brothers were all trained by 18months!!!!

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 28/05/2010 21:31

Did it in 2 weeks (not housebound) at 2.4

missingmevino · 28/05/2010 21:50

Started DS1 at 2.2 Loads of accidents, massive wees in supermarkets etc Was a good 6 months before i could venture outside without spare pants and kitchen roll!

DS2 is 2.8 He says he wants to wear nappies and will try big boy pants 'later'. Will definitely be waiting until he says he is ready. Although am hoping that will be before he starts school ha ha........

pigletmania · 28/05/2010 21:59

currently training with dd 3.2, its certainly easier than the other attempts when she was 2. I thin that we will get there in another 2 months, if i waited for her to initiate it, i will be waiting until she is 4.5 and i want to take advantage of the nice weather. DD knows when she needs to go and what to do, but preferres to do it in her pants in a bid to annoy me. She takes herself off somewhere when she feels she needs to go, shame its not the toilet.

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 28/05/2010 22:04

Right! Well after 2 days of DS 2:6 years not wanting to use the potty and having accidents I am so glad I posted! Going to take all pressure off and wait until end of July at least until I mention it again!

Good plan

You have the new baby, too, don't you? Don't make more work for yourself!

Helgicita · 28/05/2010 22:06

Started DS just before he turned 3. He got the wees within a week but took approx another 6 months before he sussed the poos.

DD is 2.4 and I'm going to wait until she says she wants to do it. From my experience it's wise to wait as long as possible. And try not to get too wound up about it all.

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 28/05/2010 22:08

notnowbernard thank-you! (goodness I am on MN way too much, MN are remembering me!! )

Yes going to wait it out!

notnowbernard · 28/05/2010 22:11

That works both ways...

I remember your "Am I in labour?" thread, I think...

HollyGoHeavily · 28/05/2010 22:11

My DD was 2.5 and had a couple of accidents on the first day but has been great apart from that. It took about 2 weeks for her to get used to pooing in the loo. I am definatly a fan of waiting till they are ready - I watched a good friend struggle for 6 months with a reluctant 20 moth old and vowed not to so the same!

notnowbernard Goodness - that thread could have gone on for days!! In the end I had 1 enormous contraction and 48mins later delivered the plancenta! All a bit
in the end! Perhaps this is a lesson not to rush things.....including the potty training!!

OP posts:
notnowbernard · 28/05/2010 22:17

Honestly, I would just chill about it. Have done it both ways: 'trained' and 'left to it'

You can guess which was easier...

JenAT · 28/05/2010 22:19

Dd was 2.9 tried when 2.6 yrs but wasn't happening. All her friends dry by 2-2.5 but really glad we waited. She wasn't ready before. Now dry day and night within 1 week, honestly! Stickers and smarties worked well, and disney princess pants. I beat myself up about her being older than all of her "dry friends" and being a lazy mummy for not getting her out of nappies sooner. I think it has to be the right time for you as well as them. So I'm definitely in the don't put pressure on yourself camp!

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 28/05/2010 22:19

So if I leave him too it, do you mean don't even mention it?? Let him see his friends at nursery using the loo etc and wait for him to ask?? I guess by 3 I should ask him??

19 months
20 months
24 months
26 months
24 months

just when they were ready

notnowbernard · 28/05/2010 22:24

With dd2 the potty was left in the bathroom from about 2.2 or so. She knew what it was for, but we didn't tell her or encourage her to use it or anything

She did have the benefit of older dd1 openly weeing and pooing in front of her I suppose Might have helped her on her way a bit

We'd say things like "When you're a big girl you won't have nappies, you'll use the potty or the toilet like dd1"

schroeder · 28/05/2010 22:26

ds was nearly 4 after months of wet pants(which didn't seem to bother him) he just decided to do it and was dry day and night after that.
dd was a bit quicker about 3, again more her doing than mine.
As for me-according to my Mum I was 12 months
