Firstly, not worried, more curious. DS can say:

Look
Beeebeee (beep beep)
Dat (that, or cat, occasionally)
SSSS (meaning snake - hissss)
Raaa (meaning lion/tiger)
Gooo Gooo (in the tone of choo choo)
Ba (bye)
Where (but does not combine into a sentence)
Mama/Dada/Nana/Rama (grandma)
Bips (biscuit or drink)
Baps (fruit, usually apple)
Brr (ball)
Teesh (teeth)
Ta (thanks)
Do, do, DO! (one two three, not counting but leading up to something)
Dump (jump)

He can also sign:
Milk
Food/drink
Cat
Dog
Elephant
Monkey
Cuddle
Duck

He doesn't make any sentences at all yet. Just interested to see what the range is

notcitrus · 26/03/2010 19:49

I know this!
Age 18 months exactly - Dadda (general multipurpose approval, or Daddy if said extra loud), duck. That was it.

18 months and 3 weeks (ie now), about 30 words and 3-5 signs, and today did his first 2-word phrase although that could have been luck: 'more milk'. Most of his talking is pointing and remarking on it, and asking for stuff is always just pointing in the relevant direction (at bottle or fridge or cupboard) rather than saying it. Although once I played dumb after he'd eaten a pile of breadsticks and eventually he sighed hugely, put his hands on his hips, and enunciated perfectly and loudly, "BEDS-TICK!!"

BertieBotts · 26/03/2010 20:37

Wow, all that in 3 weeks! That's amazing - maybe he was practicing in secret

my DD was 1 this week and said her 1st word- allgone! doesn't say mama or dada, just allgone and now dog!

LadyG · 26/03/2010 21:09

About 30-50 some very clear some unintelligible to anyone but me eg Lit or Dit for sit, Dai for down etc. Can bizarrely say 'knight' and 'power Ranger' quite clearly tho' so DS has obviously been devoting more time to her language than me.
Oh and at 1 she had very few words other than her brothers name, Mama, Dada, Peppa and Dora
(she is 19 months)

zara
cow
dog
woof
moo
baa
flower
maaaaa as a general me/ mine/more/milk

My DS is 15 months and he doesn't say anything, just a lot of baby babble. My first girl said lots of words at 18 months Second girl just one or two..... just looked nt their baby books.

PatTheHammer · 26/03/2010 21:33

They are all so different.

At 18 months DD had about 100+ words, short sentences, could count to ten and knew colours, body parts etc.

DS is nearly 15 months and says Mama, Dada, hiya, Dat, choo-choo and quack-quack (none of these very clearly!)

He can point to his head and tummy and feet and shakes and nods his head though and understands a lot more than he lets on.

He just doesn't seem bothered at all and generally points and grunts whilst letting DD decipher what he must need.

Boys2mam · 26/03/2010 22:03

DS2 is almost 19 mths and can pronouce, in no particular order;

Mam
Dad
Jake (His big brother)
Ice (Uncle Si)
Juice
Cheese
Sweets
Crisps (spotting a theme here )
Please
This
That

and can lead you to any other spot of mischief in which he deigns to partipate in (i.e, directs you to the cereal and/or biscuit cupboard).

stottiecake · 26/03/2010 22:04

At 16 months ds can say
dair (there)
poose (puss)
boose (bus)
dackdackdack (duck/quack)
tacktacktack (tractor)
da (dad)
bep (? I dunno what this is!!!)
baba (chicken/ meat)

He signs
flower
drink
more
tree
giraffe
elephant
pig
fish
snake
aeroplane
train (with choochoo)
Puts his hand to his ear to indicate an interesting noise - beeping or something.

But mostly he just screeeeeeeeeeeaaaaams If he wants something/ something is not satisfactory

stottiecake · 26/03/2010 22:07

ooh and he signs chocolate too.

Have found it interesting to note that his signs for 'pig' and 'chocolate' are the same and 'fish' and 'drink'

Boys2mam · 26/03/2010 22:07

Yep stottie, its the pure frustration they drive us mad challenge us with.

bluebump · 26/03/2010 22:12

My DS 19 months can say a few things, the most used words are:

A kind of intake of air/sucking noise to say something is really hot like a radiator or drink

Nanna (my mum)
Juice (well more like jusssss)
All gone

Very wise words Zapostrophe.

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/03/2010 22:20

18 months in a fortnight.

Mumma

And err, that's about it. An occasional 'diddy' has been heard, but not often.

But he can nod and shake his head very clearly to answer questions .

SJisontheway · 26/03/2010 22:33

Can none of the other 18 month olds curse? Mine must be very advanced

McBitchy · 26/03/2010 22:36

about 5 and 20 months but i have kids at other end of kiddie spectrum and i know - yes know - it means nada

stottiecake · 26/03/2010 23:53

Do they stop screaming (in frustration?) when they get good at talking?

(Please please)

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/03/2010 08:34

Yes and no stottie - the screaming changes to frustration that you won't give them what they've asked for!

zen1 · 27/03/2010 08:35

My 16 month old doesn't say many intelligable words, but does curse in his own language. When he gets cross he screams or shouts "Agg". He only ever used "agg" as an expression of anger and it's usually accompanied by throwing his toys all round the room

BambinolovesBeccie · 27/03/2010 09:36

Sorry to hijack but may I ask a quick question please to all the mums here with 18 month olds and lots of words. Did your DCs have many words at 15 months? Reason I ask, is I wonder if my DS will ever talk.

He has lots of sounds and communicates well like if I enter a room he'll say "eh" but in a tone that's like hi IYSWIM. He says "aah eeh" holding the phone to his ear, so I think that could be hi-ya or maybe a hello. But, no mama, the occasional dada but only in a string of babbles and non-specific (he was a late consonant babbler), and generally it's lots of grunting, screaming and throaty noises. His sign communication is good - he waves, points at people, objects, what he wants, claps, kisses, bye bye etc.

I have read so many times on MN that previous non-talkers just suddenly started talking in sentences around 2, so I'm not worried just yet (I think) - but wonder if I should be. Thanks
