Firstly, not worried, more curious. DS can say:

Look
Beeebeee (beep beep)
Dat (that, or cat, occasionally)
SSSS (meaning snake - hissss)
Raaa (meaning lion/tiger)
Gooo Gooo (in the tone of choo choo)
Ba (bye)
Where (but does not combine into a sentence)
Mama/Dada/Nana/Rama (grandma)
Bips (biscuit or drink)
Baps (fruit, usually apple)
Brr (ball)
Teesh (teeth)
Ta (thanks)
Do, do, DO! (one two three, not counting but leading up to something)
Dump (jump)

He can also sign:
Milk
Food/drink
Cat
Dog
Elephant
Monkey
Cuddle
Duck

He doesn't make any sentences at all yet. Just interested to see what the range is

Awful punctuation in my message. Apologies.

Indith · 27/03/2010 09:45

Dd is 15 months and says loads, at 18 months ds could say very little, probably about 5 words such as "bye" and "uh-oh".

izzybiz · 27/03/2010 09:46

My ds is just 18 months and babbles all day long in his "language"!

He says-
Mama
Dada
Bear (Bella)
Lola (our dog!)
Moh (Mogs)
Bub bub (Sponge Bob!)
Peppa
Num (his num num, dummy)
Mine!
Hello
Baba
Hello
Ball
Brum brum
Nana
Probably a few more that I've missed too, funny as I read this thread thinking my Ds was behind and couldn't say much atall!

ds aged 17 months can say
mama
mummy
papa
da (flemish for bye)

and is trying to learn how to say rabbit, carrot and water.

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/03/2010 11:09

bambino - my dd had 70 words by 19 months, but at 15 months she said pretty much nothing. 15 months is really quite early to expect speech.

BambinolovesBeccie · 27/03/2010 12:00

Leonie you are right, I should be glad for all the things he does do - you know how it is though, you worry over every little thing. He's my PFB.

CantSleepWontSleep that is very reassuring. Thank you. Now, I just need to stop people [competitive grandparents - who else] asking me why he isn't talking yet.

Jojay · 27/03/2010 12:08

Ds2 is 17 months and can say

Mummy
Daddy
Jasper (his brother)
Harry (the cat)
Tractor
No.

That's about it.

feralgirl · 27/03/2010 19:24

Ooh, this is fascinating. I've gone back to work so I don't hang out with many babies any more so I don't have the chance to compare DS learn about what other kids are doing.

DS is nearly 15mo and recently seems to be paying really close attention to speech. He's just started doing quite a few intelligible half-words:

Mama
Dada
Miiiii (milk)
Maaar (more, or gimme, repeated in a crescendo. This was his first 'word')
Eh-oh (he's never watched Teletubbies, but this means hello)
Di-di (our cats who are called Mowzer and Ceefer )
Ge (my mum's cat which is called Gelf)
Teddy (which at the beginning of the week just meant teddy. Now it means pretty much everything)
Nananana (banana)
Rara (rabbit)
and a repeated d noise for duck.

CantSupinate · 28/03/2010 11:22

If you're interested in 'range', I could count on one hand the number of words any of my 4 DC could say at 18 months.

So far... two became very articulate, one has needed a few months of speech therapy.

BlueberryPancake · 28/03/2010 14:06

DS at 18 months: no words
at 24 months: no words
at 2 and a half: 3 words
at 2 and 11 months: over 500 words, a handfull are clearly pronounced.

Comparing children is worthless. It doesn't mean anything. It's not because a child can walk at 9 months old that he will become an athelete, and it's not because a child speaks early that they are going to be more successful.

TulipsInTheRain · 28/03/2010 14:33

my older two had loads of speech at that age, simple sentences and all.

ds2 is almost 14 months and can say 'mama'... that's it.

he has very little babble, mostly just streams of squeaks, warbles and ahhhhs and if he hasn't imroved by 18 months he'll be given SALT (under assesment by them for feeding issues already)

swings and roundabout though, he's much more mobile and active than my other two were at this age and due to not having any speech has developed other ways of communicating and has a cool sense of humour

MrsMattie · 28/03/2010 14:40

DD is 17 mths and says the following:
mama / dada
nanny (my mum is a Granny, so not pleased about this )
DS's name
la (light)
duck
buba (baby)
door
un-dow (window)
no

urm...that's it, really. She babbles a bit. And she has good receptive language, I'm pretty sure. She seems to understand most instructions.

DS was talking in short sentences by this age, so just shows, they're truly all different.

Agree with Tulips re: swings and roundabouts. DD is a much happier, more chilled out child than DS ever was.

pigleychez · 29/03/2010 20:45

At 18mths DD was a very good talker.

Saying most words very clearly and talking in sentences.ie "One more cake please Daddy"

Now at 20mths are are getting words like Georgous,Fantastic and Brilliant. [Shock]

She will attempt to copy any word and is usually really clear in her pronunciation. She was an early talker and now doesnt shut up from the moment she wakes up!!

JazzDalek · 01/04/2010 22:06

Ds is 20 months now and over the last few weeks it's as if something has just clicked - prior to this he had a few words, but showed no interest in copying us or trying out new words. I always felt though that he was taking it all in...he really listened and paid attention when we read books etc. Lately though he repeats words after us and comes out with new words most days.

He says:

Car (his first word)
Train
Eden (sister)
Wa (means 'yes')
Wo (means 'no')
Duck
Quack quack
Dog
Cat
Chichins (chickens)
Thank you
Thanks
Stir stir
Shake shake
Buloo (Waybuloo)
Tree
Truck
Bus
Frog
Tower
Bricks
Kiss
Stairs
Cheese
Birds
Cake
Chair
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
Drink
Eggs (meaning eggs)
Eggs (meaning legs)
Toes
Gonk (Pinky-Ponk)
Stuck
Bowl
All gone
OK

And a couple of days ago he said "train gone" (very sadly...dp had pinched his train so that I could get him to stand up and get his PJs on). We also had a nice little conversation the other day while I was changing his nappy. We were at my dad's place - he keeps animals and ds LOVED seeing them. So I say "Did you see the animals? Did you see the dogs?" and he replied "Wa! Dog...a' cat....a' chichins." First time he's done that. I was walking on air the rest of the day!
