Dd keeps saying 'Pardon?' Habit/attention or bad hearing?

I am thinking of taking dd (3y 10m) to the doc's or the HV because she keeps saying 'pardon?' when dh and I speak to her. I taught her to say it instead of 'huh' or 'what' and she definitely likes the idea of saying it because we praised her so much when we didn't have to remind her.
However, I think she's saying it too much now and I want to get her ears checked out. Dh is more of the opinion she likes watching us repeat ourselves and we've tried saying 'what did you think we said' - sometimes she admits she knows, others she doesn't.

I know it sounds blatently obvious that we take her to have her ears checked and we will this week, but I just wondered if anyone else has had this with their kids? Will also ask nursery today when I pick her up if they've noticed anything.

LOL Mandy, that's exactly what DS2 does!

he shouts too. With DS1's AS screeches, DS2's shouting and DS3's just learning to speak noises, I'm surprised the neighbours haven't billed us for soundproofing!

My nephew kept saying "what" to every thing and we were trying to teach him to say "pardon" instead.
I had him over one day and said to him "what would you like for lunch?"
To which he replied "its not what, its pardon"!!!

Whilst i agree with getting the hearing checked out if you are worried, I would say this. All of mine at some stage have automatically said "What?" or "Pardon?" when I think they have heard me perfectly well, it's just they have been distracted so not heard all of what I said. I made a point of calling their name first and waiting for them to look at me before I said what I wanted them to do. It worked wonders and lessened mine and theirs frustration.

Try it, see how youu go.

I agree with that and of course there is selective hearing..lasts from about 2.5 uptill well 14 so far!!!
Get hearing checked out though then you can rule that out or sort it out!

sorry haven't replied sooner. Have had a lot on my plate since last week and only just saw this... Dh took dd to doctor. Dd is just getting over a chesty cough and GP thinks we need to make sure she's fully over this before we send for any tests as this may well have affected her hearing. So she's got some anti-biots and we'll review the situation in a week or 2's time. GP also said that it could also well be an affectation (ie she's doing it for effect) as this is quite common at her age but said there will be no probs referring her if we think it's necessary.
