where do you your baby when you're in the shower?

Wasn't sure where to post this and it's a bit of a stupid question really, but to date my 8 mo usually sits in her bouncer whilst I shower, she will just about tolerate it for the duration of my (very short) shower. She's almost grown out of her bouncer and I don't know what to do with her when she's to big for it! Any suggestions? She can't crawl yet...

If she can't crawl yet, you could try putting her on a mat with some toys that you use just for shower time so that they're really interesting to her. I put ds (also 8 months) in his old car seat or in his toddler chair (it's like rocking chair but suitable from birth to 3 years)

You could also try singing to her or playing peek-a-boo while you shower. If ds is being difficult I just wait till he has his morning nap. HTH

My 7mo DD - since learning to roll and able to cross the room in a matter of seconds - goes in the bouncy chair as if I leave her in her cot she smacks her head on the bars trying to roll.

No advice, but will watch this thread with interest, as DD is starting to get fidgety in the chair and I don't think she'll be having it much longer...

naturopath · 02/02/2010 21:19

I was just about to say "in the bouncer chair watching me", but you already do that. Hmm, trying to remember what I did with ds1 at that stage (ds2 is 6 months, so still in the bouncer).

Probably on of the following:

  • lying on changing mat playing with toys on bathroom floor
  • in his cot watching cot mobile / playing / looking at books
- asleep somewhere (I often have my shower during his morning nap - yes it involves getting dressed and undressed prior to this, but sometimes that's the only time I can manage).

I used to have DS in the bathroom with me with anything tempting/dangerous stashed away (he liked to grab the toilet brush and wave that around, ewww). Its quite a big bathroom so he could have a look around it and I could bring toys in to entertain him. Though when he was a bit older he used to stand in front of the shower door banging on it until I got out which was quite annoying.

TomThumbMum · 02/02/2010 21:25

Until now ds sat in a leapfrog learn and groove activity station, takes up the whole of the bathroom but keeps him entertained and safe. I bought it on ebay so got a bargain and its been brilliant. Ds is 10 months now and is crawling so don't think he'll tolerate sitting in the station for much longer though. He can't use it once he is starting to walk.
He will also sit happily with some toys and a few snacks for 10 mins on a playmat on the bathroom floor but its a bit more risky in case he takes a dive for the free standing mirror or manages to get in the cabinet, resulting in me leaping out of shower to rescue him.

I'm trying to remember what I did with DD once she was too big for her bouncer... I think I probably put her in her cot or on the playmat and just tried to have a really quick shower. If she can't crawl then she can't get into too much trouble in a few minutes.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/02/2010 21:32

Once DS was too big for his bouncer I used to shut all the doors upstairs and put the stairgate across, and he would have the run of the landing, his own room and the bathroom where I was showering. That worked pretty well for a few months.

Now I either have to have it before DH starts work, or else I put him in his cot with some music on and some toys and books. Sometimes he howls if he thinks I'm taking too long, but he is fine, and safe and can see me from his cot because I leave all the doors open.

monkeyfacegrace · 02/02/2010 21:32

I put my son in his highchair with a handful of cheesy watsits

Snowtiger · 02/02/2010 21:35

DS is usually in the bathroom with me, with a book / jigsaw / toy of some sort, but there's also a stairgate at the top of the stairs so that he can't escape downstairs, and he has the run of our bedroom, his own, and the landing.

preggersplayspop · 02/02/2010 21:36

When they are a little bit older cbeebies really comes in handy

Same as a couple of other posters - shut the stairgate and leave him to crawl around. Our shower is in an en-suite bathroom so I leave the door open and he tends to just sit on the floor at the end of our bed and just watch Sooo different from DS1 who would be up to mischief the minute my back was turned but even with DS1, I used to just leave him to roam free.

Beasknees · 02/02/2010 21:40

anywhere in the bathroom with some toys to play with, all loo roll and wipes and toilet brushes out of reach

BikeRunSki · 02/02/2010 21:41

What Snowtiger said - but with shower door open (so can get a bit wet; if I close it, he pushes it open anyway), with all razors/bleach etc out of reach, and anything that will let him climb onot loo and pull himself into handbasin well away.Ue is 17 months old, with the marked makings of a rock climber.

Wigglesworth · 02/02/2010 21:41

Usually have my shower during morning nap or at night time. I used to put him in his baby walker in lounge (carpet really thick so wheels wouldn't move on there) and put the baby channel on TV for 10 mins which usually kept him happy. Luckily our bathroom is downstairs so I left the door open so I could hear him.

mcflumpy · 02/02/2010 21:58

Lots of helpful suggestions thanks. I used to shower during her nap but the bathroom is next to to DD's room and I kept waking her up. I'll try her on the floor with some toys (not sure why I didn't think of that!!...) and hope she doesn't roll off and get stuck somewhere.
Tried her in the cot with the mobile and some toys but she just wails as she can hear me next door.

Time to buy some stairgates I think...

I had a travel cot/ playpen type thing (with a few toys to keep them occupied) that I used to put mine in for a few minutes when I was in the shower.

tw888 · 02/02/2010 22:07

DS is always with DH when I shower. This is the only baby-free time I have )

icarriedawatermelon2 · 02/02/2010 22:13

IN THE EMPTY BATH! Acts like a play pen!

Portofino · 02/02/2010 22:13

I skipped shower and had a nice bath when dh got home from work. It was especially nice initially as he would bring me up a G&T!

He usually stands beside the bath, leaning over and leering up at me He is 17 months though. When he was a bit younger I would shower during his nap time, or just give him a toy to play with in the bathroom. Put the loo seat down though... Ahem.

verybusyspider · 02/02/2010 22:45

is shower over the bath? I stuck mine in the bath with me at the other end with some toys, great for swimming training as its really good for them to get their faces splashed. Failing that in their cot for 10 mins with some toys, made mistake of never doing that with ds1 who won't tolerate being on his own, did it with ds2 and ds3 and they play beautifully, probably more luck that design...

cory · 03/02/2010 09:10

I had one room (the living room) that was absolutely baby proof and a stairgate on that.
