my ds didnt jump till he was well gone 2.

Chandra · 29/06/2005 17:01

DS just started jumping properly (raising his feet from the floor ) about a week ago and he is almost 2.5

purpleturtle · 29/06/2005 17:01

Dd was much later than ds. He didn't walk till 16mths, but could jump by about 2, I think.

QueenEagle · 29/06/2005 17:02

ds3 is 2 and a half and tries to but only manages to get one foot off the floor atm. Funny watching him though!

Twiglett · 29/06/2005 17:03

DS didn't manage it till over 3

coldtea · 29/06/2005 17:04

Ds was well over 2.

Dd was just 13 months , holding hands of course!

They do trampolining at her toddler group, the trampoline coach thought she was closer to 2 as most children don't learn to jump until around their 2nd birthday.

Flamesparrow · 29/06/2005 17:05

DD has just started jumping properly (rather than a skip) - 2 and a bit...

MarsLady · 29/06/2005 17:13

with DTs? Hopefully not for a very long time!

Usually about 2ish. They start off jumping their bodies without their feet moving, go onto lifting one foot in a stamping motion and then go on to jumping onto one then two feet. Marching is very hrd for them too and needs brill co-ordination. Good exercise too!

deegward · 29/06/2005 17:48

Apparantly they physically can't do it until over 2. Also did you know a child has to be over 5 to be able to reach over their head to their ears!! under 5s can't

JonesTheSteam · 29/06/2005 18:11

DS is 21 months old and has been jumping for about a fortnight (jumps properly about 3 times out of 4)

I think it may be because we have one of those little trampolines in the garden that they can jump on and hold on to a handle. He must be used to the sensation of both feet leaving the ground.

I don't think DD could jump until she was about two and a half.

LunarSea · 29/06/2005 18:58

ds jumped early too - like JonesTheSteam (love the name!) both we and his nursery have those mini trampolines with handles so he was used to the movement, and he's always been very well balanced/co-ordinated anyway. I can't remember exactly when he did it, but it was definately before he could ride a bike, and that was 20 months (just got on one - with stabilisers of course - belonging to a neighbour and rode off on it, much to our amazement).

LunarSea · 29/06/2005 19:05

Just tried out that over the head to touch ears things with ds (3.9) - and his arms aren't long enough to do it! He can do slightly round the back of his head to touch the opposite ear (which is as close as the length of his arms will let him get) though. Is it a cordination thing that means that they're not supposed to be able to do it, or is it normal that the relative size of heads and arms doesn't allow it?

spidermama · 29/06/2005 19:15

My DS2 didn't jump til nearly 3 because he has extra big heavy head so couldn't get launched.

clary · 30/06/2005 07:55

My ds1 was 2 and a half, dd was the same.
Ds2 learned at just about 2, he was so proud! but he is excellent at gross motor, walked at 9mo etc so I think that is early.

cacaboo · 30/06/2005 11:06

Interesting! I'd been thinking that DS, 16 months, seems to be able to jump, as he goes to make bouncing/jumping actions and often both feet leave the ground. Usually he lands on his feet again, but sometimes on his knees poor guy!

But given what everyone is saying, perhaps it's not "real" jumping, maybe they do something more coordinated around age 2?!

fastasleep · 30/06/2005 11:20

My 16 month old's been able to jump on his trampoline for ages...at about 12 months he started without holding on... he has little 'hopping mad tantrums' where both feet leave the ground and he usually lands on his feet again... but I guess that's not quite 'proper jumping' lol

Kidstrack2 · 30/06/2005 11:34

Ds didn't jump till 21/2 Dd was 2 last month and has been jumping for a few months, both feet off the ground. Before this she did a sort of half jump with only one foot off the ground but did the whole jumping motion is so funny to watch them concentrating to jump!

edhj69 · 30/06/2005 11:59

DS 19 months now been tigger bouncing for a few weeks - it started when he was trying to get toys off high shelf. has been able to march for a while as does it at rythm and rhyme every week. Probably thinks bouncing about is normal as since the summer arrived DW and I have been doing hand stands and cart wheels whenever we're out in the garden

ninja · 30/06/2005 16:16

dd's been jumping - both feet off the floor -since well before she was 18 months. She's just 2 now and will jump off a step with both feet together and land on feet and that's quite new. She was walking quite early (10.5 months) but otherwise I wouldn't say she was particularly advanced physically, she is light though so maybe that helps!!

blodwen · 30/06/2005 17:03

One of my mindees is now 18 months and has been jumping properly (even to a rhythm!)with both feet off the floor and no falling over for about 2-3 weeks. She is also quite a lightweight. {smile] And very gorgeous!

tassis · 30/06/2005 18:18

Ds started at 23 months. Very proud of himself he was too!

edam · 30/06/2005 18:22

ds has just started - he's 2 in two weeks.

polly2 · 30/06/2005 19:12

jumping...who takes note of that in a child's life. i'm sure he will enjoy reading this in his diary when he grows up!!!
