What age did your dc go into a proper bed?

Just wondering, because my dd is 16 months and always banging her head on the cot bars, so we are thinking about changing to a child bed with guards.

Your experiences please?

I should add, she isn't banging her head deliberately, it's just that she moves around a lot in her sleep.

i folded a rolled sheet down the sides to stop dd bumping herself.
she is 2.5 and is having a bed for xmas.

littlemisslozza · 23/12/2009 21:49

DS was 18 months, but it was a slightly raised mattress rather thsn a normal height bed. He wasn't settled in his cot and once we changed him into a bed he slept through!
It really depends on the child - some are ready at 15 months, some not until 2.5 - 3 years.

skinsl · 23/12/2009 22:06

DS 2.2 and just gone into big bed last week. not sure how successful it is yet!moved stairgate to his room and he gets outof bed and stands at the gate shouting me to lie down with him. ignored him tonight and he seems to have settled fine. Had to do it cos he was climbing out of the cot and too scared he would hurt himself.

ineedalifelaundry · 23/12/2009 22:07

littlemisslozza I feel that dd might sleep better in a normal bed too. When you say it was a 'slightly raised mattress', was it an improvised childbed? Did he ever fall out of it?

I am an early bed advocate here (could never get on with cot )

dd was 16mths - ikea toddler bed.
ds went into our bed (lowish, kingsize bed) at 6mths for the evening alone, then we just put him into a toddler bed a couple of weeks ago (17mths). Is going well!

works for us as I will always go to them if they wake (ds mostly sleeps through but comes to us in morning or if wakes. dd always cried ). Don't know if I would have gone so early if I wanted to leave them to cry or anything.

Good luck - I love settling ds in his bed, so cute!

Adair · 23/12/2009 22:14

Oh, and ds is a total wriggler/fidgeter (doesn't stop til he is completely asleep) but seems calmer in a bed. And hasn't fallen out yet. Dd has only ever fallen out once (when my sister put her to bed while babysitting. Still can't work out what she did ).

ineedalifelaundry · 23/12/2009 23:06

Thanks adair, that's encouraging. We were in ikea today and as soon as dd saw the toddler beds on display, she immediately climbed all over them and pretended to go to sleep on one! Which is what prompted our discussion about getting one.

dd1 went in a big bed at 16 months - we have a bed guard on it though because she used to roll about quite a bit and it's a high bed (has storage underneath). Tbh the bed guard could come off now but we just haven't got round to doing so (she's 2 1/2)

Piffle · 23/12/2009 23:14

2 here little ikea vikare bed inherited from big sister.
No worries at all and no more banging!!!

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/12/2009 23:16

DS went into toddler bed just before he was 2. So did DD a couple of years later.

seeker · 23/12/2009 23:17

Mine went straight from moses basket to futon on the floor - completely bypassing the cot/bed stage. Neither are compulsory, you know!

MadameMoe · 23/12/2009 23:26

DD's just gone into a toddler bed, she's 2.1. I tried to move her into it at 16 months gave up pretty quickly and put in storage. If I hadn't been 7 months pregnant it might have worked out, but, TBH DD seemed to prefer the 'security' of the confines of the cot at that age.

The move (at just over 2) was as smooth as you like. Having just had a birthday and feeling like a 'big girl' she seemed to find it logical somehow.

We've put a dim-ish magic lantern type light on a timer (for 7am), she knows it goes on when it's 'morning time' and that she shouldn't get out of be before it comes on. The temptation to watch it usually keeps her in bed for 1/4 of an hour or so .

She does get out but is happy to go back in because (usually between 6:30 and 6:45) the lamp isn't on so it can't be morning yet... Little does she know I can change the time setting

MadameMoe · 23/12/2009 23:28

this sort of lamp.

My 3 all went into beds at around 17 months.

We've got the Ikea extending bed that has gone through all 3 of them, starting with my eldest, when my middle one was ready we got an Ikea loft bed for my eldest and the toddler bed went under neath for the middle one. Then when it was time for the youngest to go in the toddler bed we bought a cabin bed for the eldest and gave him the box room, my middle one went into the loft bed and the little one went into the toddler bed. Funny thing is my little one kept getting up into the loft bed and frightening the life out of me but in the end I had to give up and let him stay up there and middle one stay down in the toddler bed.

littlemisslozza · 24/12/2009 09:28

It was the pull out guest bed that goes under another single bed. He only fell out a few times but I put a duvet on the floor next to the bed just in case! He didn't mastger the duvet until he was 2 so was still in sleeping bags.

DS1 went to own bed at just 2 months off 2 years- it just happened. We went away on holiday and when we came back, he slept in his own bed -the bed had always been left in his room as well as the cot since he was born. DS2 went in his own bed this summer, May I think, so about 18 months. He just seemed to not want to go to sleep in his cot so I tried lying in bed with him then gradually withdrawing. Most nights he goes off fine, though he has discovered he can get out of bed and comes to us during the night. Again, the bed was always in his room, as well as the cot, so it was familiar

Guad · 24/12/2009 09:53

ds2 was 15 months as he could propel himself over the top of the cot

Rindercella · 24/12/2009 09:57

DD went into a full sized single bed at exactly 2 yrs old (about 4 mths ago). We use these and she hasn't fallen out yet!

ln1981 · 24/12/2009 10:15

my three were all in a bed around 18-20months. big two were ready for it when the time came but my youngest wasnt! We have major sleep issues with him at the mo... He only changed as the cot broke!
ds1 is in a 'normal' size single bed and has been since he changed over. both dd and ds2 are in kids beds from ikea-lower to the ground and smaller in length. They are great! Used a bed guard with all of them to stop them falling out.

Adair · 24/12/2009 15:21

Agree, Seeker, we didn't bother at all with cot this time round. And no Moses Basket this time either, went straight from next to me to bed. Though we do have Ikea extendable beds as there is more room to play in their room while they are small (and they are so darn cute ).

Clare123 · 24/12/2009 21:13

Both mine were around 2 yrs.

pigletmania · 24/12/2009 23:32

My dd was about 2.5 when she moved into a big bed and regret why we did not move her sooner. She sleeps much much better in the bed and loves it, all the worries about her falling out, getting out were for nothing really as she gets on better in the bed than the cot.

kpickles · 02/01/2010 13:29

I am worried about putting 18 month old boy in big boy bed..fears he just wont stay in it!! AND i need my sleep, he does sleep through 4 nights out of seven and in between times I just go up and give him some reassurance (doesnt usually leave his cot) and walk out...cries for a few mins and then goes to sleep.

But if he is a bed will he not just keep getting out??? and yelling at the door!?

pigleychez · 02/01/2010 13:51

DD has just moved into her bed the past few days at 17mths old.
Few reasons really...
DC2 due in May and wanted her to be settled in her bed before then and not have the worry of her thinking the baby was taking her cot away.
Plus being over xmas, DH was home to help with the nightwakings and we didnt have to worry about being tired for work etc.

We had intended to leave the bed up for a few days for her to fmailise herself with it before doing naps in it for a few days before nights.
We put up the Ikea bed on Mon and she loved it!So much so she wanted to sleep in their that night so we went with it.
Is excellent at going down so that wasnt a problem.
First few nights she would wake and it took a while to get her back off but within a few days shes sleeping through and longer than ever too. Yesterday morning we woke before her and laid in bed till she woke at 8.30! Bliss!
We are used to her wimpers on occasions as shes a light sleeper and can wake herself abit. Def sleeping longer though which is fab.
