Anyone with a left handed baby? Or left handed adults?

I think my daughter is left handed. She always sucks the thumb on her left hand. She uses her left hand to pick up things. The hand grip of her left hand is stronger than her right hand. My husband thinks I am nuts as she is only 16 weeks old.

When did you spot that your child was left handed. I think I was fairly sure by six months my son was right handed.

Is there anything that a right handed mum should know about left handed people? The only person in my family who is left handed is my father in law. He tells me not to punish her for using her left hand as it made no difference to him.

But it doesn't matter does it?

I'm not going to refuse to have a scan cos my child might be left handed because of it!

I wondered from about 20 months whether DD would be left handed, and she is. Well, actually, she's ambidextrous, she can write with both hands equally well but is being encouraged to use her left hand at school as it seems to be very slightly dominant.

Both my mother and brother are ambidextrous so it's not too surprising really.

I think perhaps that 16 weeks is too young to tell. DS certainly favours his left hand at the moment too, but he does so much with both hands, it's impossible to tell.

My daughter is two and I think she is going to be a leftie, my twin brother is a leftie and I'm a rightie, so who knows!!

I was punished at school and 'forced' to try writing with my right hand, and that was in the 80s. I suspect it still happens in some places.

dd showed prefernce for her left hand by a year but sucked her right thumb ! I find it impossible to teach her things like tying laces.

Well in the interests of musing and little else, my DD is left handed (2.4yrs) it's been really obvious for a long time. Don't know where all the theories come from and probably most are myths buy hey it's a Friday afternoon so let's go with it, I'll muse over mammamia25's post re Breech baby as DD was.
Also my friend's first DD was breech and is also a leftie - so that's 2 more
BTW my son although only 8mths old, seems to be righthanded.
P.S Total novely factor in our house as we cannot find anyone back to grandparents on both sides - no other lefties!! my little DD Oddity :0)

I knew my youngest DD was a leftie from a very early age. She held toys with her right hand and did things to them with the left hand, like poking dolls' eyes, etc. When she started sitting in the high chair and self feeding at about six months, it was always with her left hand. And of course scribbling on the walls or wherever. She would even pick up a crayon with her right hand sometimes and then transfer it to the left.
ExH is left handed (that wasn't the issue that made him and exH), his father is, and also one of his sisters. I have a left handed uncle with no known history of left handedness in my grandparents, but in those days they used to force children to write with the right hand.
Watch out for buying scissors -- most are designed for righties and it was very frustrating for my DD to hack away and not get anywhere with the ones I had. Same for pencil sharpeners, but they have machines in school. Her handwriting is not neat, but I think that's because she doesn't care. Funny enough, there were more lefties than righties in her nursery school class of 12 (9 lefties) which I found very unusual. Her teacher this year was a leftie, so she had a good experience. He put the lefties sitting together so they didn't all bump arms while writing. You may have to become an advocate for your child in the classroom if there are few others who are lefthanded, definitely mention it to every teacher at the start of term. In my older children's school they have individual desks with chairs attached, built for righties. I don't know how the lefties manage there.

Oh yes, forgot to add, it was murder teaching her to tie laces, but eventually she figured out her own method. There's that lefthanded creativity...
