Anyone with a left handed baby? Or left handed adults?

I think my daughter is left handed. She always sucks the thumb on her left hand. She uses her left hand to pick up things. The hand grip of her left hand is stronger than her right hand. My husband thinks I am nuts as she is only 16 weeks old.

When did you spot that your child was left handed. I think I was fairly sure by six months my son was right handed.

Is there anything that a right handed mum should know about left handed people? The only person in my family who is left handed is my father in law. He tells me not to punish her for using her left hand as it made no difference to him.

im left handed and the only one in my family. supposedly lefties are good at art which i am!

its not made any difference to me. except at primary school i used to write with my paper literally upside down, and even now when writing i do occasionally smudge my writing. and i cant cut with certain pairs of scissors very easily and some potato peelers i cant use!

and i find it difficult to write the stub bit in a cheque book but im sure it will be a while until your dd has to do that!!

juicychops · 09/08/2009 20:34

and my ds is right handed so he's not inherited my leftiness which i was quite disappointed with

Wilts · 09/08/2009 20:37

Juicychops- have you asked your bank if they do left handed cheque books? I had one with Lloyds, but can't get one with the bank I am with now.

juicychops · 09/08/2009 20:41

i think they do but i have never asked as i only write 2 personal cheques per month for rent and nursery fees.

but at work i write cheques all the time and they are huge fat cheque books which you cant fold the cheque back far enough for me to fit my left hand in the gap to do the stub! but as there are other people (right handed) who write cheques too they have refused to get a left handed one just for me

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 09/08/2009 20:44

I am sure ds (11mo) is left handed, and when he was 16wo I thought it was the case too, so I wouldn't poo-poo a dominant side at that age.

aendr · 10/08/2009 08:29

juicychops: 2 is still more than I write a month and my personal cheque book (Barclays) is lefty. Unfortunately my OH won't let me try to get a lefty joint account cheque book in case he's lumbered with one. :-(

I do think DS was clearly left handed even at that age - no CP or other complications, he did do everything with both hands, but he did every new thing first with his left hand.

Sure enough, he did turn out to be left handed as far as writing is concerned - but chooses to play all sports etc in a right-handed way, and even uses right handed scissors, so we have no 'special' left handed equipment at all.

LoveBeingAMummy · 10/08/2009 08:50

A few weeks ago DD was sat on my mums knee and was given a spoon to eat some ice-cream and mum was horrified that I gave it to her in her left hand, shes 16 mths, I replied that its hoiw she normally takes the spoon off me to use.

She then put the spoon in her right hand and with her hand covering it 'helped' her to eat, my and da were , and yes I said something!!!

HarlotOTara · 10/08/2009 08:51

My DD1 is left-handed and has always been so. It was obvious quite early on that she had a preference for her left hand. It has never been a problem although her writing was a bit messy when she was younger - not now - and I did buy her left-handed scissors. Although she uses righ-handed ones now. Afaik no one on either side of the family is/was left handed

The only thing you need to know about left handers is we are utterly fab and superior in every way!

Both dh and I are LH, DS (14 mths) is showing definite preference for his left hand which I am of course encouraging at every turn .

I am much more left handed than dh but don't bother with much left handed 'equipment' cos if I only got used to using that I would struggle outside of my own home, or end up carrying a suitcase full of stuff around with me!

As for 'punishment', I am 37 and started school in 1976. I could already write with my left hand and yet was constantly 'encouraged' to write right handed until mum found out and put the teacher straight!

I don't think babies of 16 weeks have a preference for anything but milk do they??... . DD1, who is now 12, is a leftie. She has had no probs with it and is of course very artistic cos she thinks with the left side of her brain.

Or do I mean right side of her brain?? Oh well...

piscesmoon · 10/08/2009 09:02

It is much to early to say. My right handed DS always sucked his left thumb.
I am left handed and so is one of my DSs-it is no big deal. You learn to adapt to a right handed world-it can be a bit inconvenient sometimes but nothing more.
When I was at school there were no scissors for left handers-if they can't find them now in school I tell them it is perfectly possible to use regular scissors.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 10/08/2009 09:03

puppy, don't left handers think with the right side of their brain?

Oh, and I am the least artistic person I know so don't everyone with left handed kids start getting all excited about your child's potential artistic talent - I struggle to draw stick men! My right handed dad and brothers are amazingly artistic though - how is that fair?!

5inthebed · 10/08/2009 09:03

DS1 is a lefty. I knew from a young age he was. He only needs lefty scissors (harder to come across and double the price!!!) but other than that he gets on fine.

My DH was a lefty, but his school discouraged it and made him use his right hand. He is only 28!

I used to work with a chinese woman who was very fearful for her left handed daughter, as in her culture, left handed peple didn't live as long as right handed people. I found this really interesting.

PuppyMonkey · 10/08/2009 09:03
