can i ask parents of 2.5yr olds a question?

can your child walk 100m without falling over several times? (in fact over 10times sometimes). can they walk holding your hand without falling over? can u walk tyo a local shop with them without them falling over?

Hi Misdee, my ds has just turned 2 and yes, most of the time he can walk long distances without falling over. But sometimes, he's incredibly unco-ordinated and falls over thin air. Also, if something grabs his attention, he loses concentration and trips over his own feet.
It just depends what type of mood the little man is in!

Ds finds walking holding my hand difficult and would fall over twice in 100m whilst holding my hand.

He falls over when he is tired, hungry or the ground is uneven.

He is 2yrs3months.

dd2 is 2 and 8months, and after attempting to get her to walk home from dd1 school today, she fell over every 10 steps or so. getting fed up with this, her trousers are wearing thin!

Misdee, my DS1 used to fall over a lot, always had bruises and scabs on his knees, one summer expecially bad ( not sure how old he was but maybe 2?). DS2 is 2 and only falls when he runs fast down a hill!
DS1 was a realtively late walker and gross motor has never been his strong point (very soft joints, late hopper, skipper etc) but he?s basically fine now (nearly 6). DS2 is the opposite. Was yr dd a late walker? Can she jump with both feet off the floor, kick a ball, bend and pick things up while walkign etc? How is her running? If you are concerned then it?s worth seeing yr GP to put yr mind at rest.

dd2 walked at 10months old. and basically she falls over as much now as when sdhe started walking. she can kick a ball, stop and bend down to pick something (but sometimes goes head over heels), she can run but falls over doing it. she walks with a gallop.

i'm sorry for bringing this up again, as has been discussed before, but just needed to compare her abilities with walking with other kids her ages.

My dd 2.7 is [pretty speedy and likes to run so she falls over when the ground is uneven or going downhill. she rarely falls when just walking along beside me - she's a good walker tho in comparison with some of her peers who are more in the buggy (we rarely use ours now)

Ds2 is 2.3yrs and rarely falls over. Ds1 fell over a lot more at the same age - to the extent that I never dressed him in shorts in the summer because there was no protection for his knees. IIRC though I don't think he fell over as often as your dd does.

Have you had her checked misdee?

she was seen last summer by paed ast the hospitalwith ergards to her walking. am just wondering if i need to get her seen again. think i do.

so not much like my ds1 then really. My ds2 was a 10mth walker as well and at first seemed to crash into things a lot (imo because he was so young, had not learned where things were etc). By now I?d have expected yr dd to have got past the falling over stage by now. Have you had her checked over? Not that I know what for as the only experience I have of walkign probs is with my ds1 and a friend?s who have the soft joints I mention, but that?s not usually linked with early walking (which 10mths is, isn?t it?)
That?s not much help really. Can she jump or hop? I wonder if it?s to do with balance, which could be an ear problem?

Well that sounds about right then, by 2.5 she should be jumping, but hopping at this stage would be pretty impressive actually. DD learned at 3.5 which I think is about average. I just asked thinking about balance. but that sounds OK. Wonder what it might be caused by? What did paed say last time?

he saw her walk holding dh hand and said she was fine. he didnt see her in the corridor fallin g over. told me not to be so anxious and nothign wrong with her. also said it could be befcause she is tall for her age.

Does she try to go quicker than her feet will take her, misdee? My dd's also 2 1/2 and rarely falls over but she walks at a snail's pace and gets tired VERY quickly. I'm trying to convince her that mummy can't carry her everywhere any more!

she is quite fast sometimes, but can be walking slow beside me and falls over nothing.

She is older than 2.5 now (2.10), but at 2.5 - yes to all of those.

misdee, I can remember when DS first started pre-school as soon as he was 2.5. I didn't plan for him to start until he was 3, but I was having so many problems feeding dd, it seemed the fairest thing to do.

dd was in the buggy, and ds would hold the handle of the buggy and walk along very nicely with me. Aware of roads,traffic...yes of course we had the occasional stumble, we still do no he is 5.5! But I use this as a sort of benchmark IYSWIM, when "comparing" how dd is walking!HTH!

thats the thing dingle. at this age dd1 was walking beside me, and had good road sense. in fact she walked a lot. still does. dd2 just cant do it.

I've started trying to walk Amelia, one way or the other to/from the nursery. That's only 3 times a week, it is getting better in general, but is still very hard work!
I felt like giving up last week, it was just so windy, and she just refused to walk and just stood there holding her little ears and crying, whilst huddles around my leg!
Another time , when her little friend were walkinh one way and we needed to walk in the oppsite direction, she just flopped herself down in a PUDDLE, in the middle of the road!
She constantly wobbles and swings on my arm, I'll end up with arms like an orangutang!!

Are you doing DLA?

I've had to really make an effort to get dd to walk - when ds was her age dd had arrived so he had to get out of the buggy. I find with two we are always in a rush and the inclination is just ti stick dd in the buggy to get there more quickly - am having to train myself to allow extra time for journeys.

Erm Ds is 2.4 and I would say that 9 times out of 10 yes he can walk without falling over.

Yes, and no! Depends if he's concentrating. He does trip over quite a bit.

i was sent the forms for DLA for mobility part but threw them away. am womdering now if should apply.
