Are clothes manufacturers making baby clothes on the small side or something. DS is 4.5 months and is 15lbs and very long. Even still, I was shocked this morning to find myself having to put him into 6-9 month clothes - the only 3-6 things that fit him are the odd vest and sleepsuit. He is on 75th percentile so bigger yes, but not huge. Are there any other mums working this far ahead on the clothes front? I feel a bit sad actually, he's growing so quick.

Yes.

And it continues.

DS has just turned 8 but he wears a lot of clothes for aged 10. He's tall and has a swimmers body but he's not exceptional or off the scale. I think clothes manufacturers model their stuff on leprechauns meself.

ronshar · 13/05/2009 11:13

I wouldnt worry, my DD1 is only nine but is so tall she is wearing 13-14 sizes in some shops.

She started sprouting at about 6months.
Every shop has different sizes as well. Makes it very hard to buy stuff without her being there to try.
I have found it hard sometimes to remember her actual age not how old she looks.

Jas · 13/05/2009 11:15

I did with both dds. DD1 is now 9, 5 foot tall and in 11-12 clothes. DD2 is 8 and in 9-10

mistlethrush · 13/05/2009 11:16

Ds went into 3-6mo clothes at 1mo, 6 - 9mo clothes at 4 mo etc. It has got a bit better more recently - but he still tends to be fine in the year above (he's 4) in terms of tops, although the trousers are a bit long this far ahead at the moment...

imaginewittynamehere · 13/05/2009 11:17

yes, dd1 is very long too, lasted virtually no time in all the 0-3 babygros IO bought. now ar 2.8 she is in 3-4 trousers & 4-5 tops

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 13/05/2009 11:18

My ds2 is just 11 months and has been 12-18 clothes for at least 6 weeks!

He's on the 98th percentile!

HarryB · 13/05/2009 11:18

Thanks all. I guess the lesson is not to go mad on buying clothes in one size

Well, DS was premature and until he was 18 months old he way always in clothes for much younger babies. Then hie just cought up and at 3 he shot up and from then on he was always in the clothes for the next age up from him. Now, at 6, he's in 7-8 or 8-9 yr old's clothes.

I don't mind, I like having a tall ds

llareggub · 13/05/2009 11:28

It varies with us. DS is 2.5 but has a pair of shorts that fit that are aged 6-12 months. He is very slender but tall so things get too short before they get too tight.

hannahsaunt · 13/05/2009 11:32

My children are at the other end of the spectrum with ds2 (6) barely into age 4-5 school trousers; ds3 (20m) is moving into 12-18mo clothes only now and all the trousers need hoiked up. Your kids aren't the ones who are going to be on the receiving end of societal comments about small men etc so it's not all bad.

Verity79 · 13/05/2009 11:40

My 1st DD was a March 06 baby and was wearing 0-3 skirts and tops (some were still too big in width ) in May 07. She wasn't prem but just very slight at 7lb 13oz {not a small baby but just seemed to have heavy bones). Almost all of her clothes she grew out of by length not width.

She's now in 3-4 and 4-5 clothes and is 100cm-ish and 15kg.

Her little sister was term as well and was 7lb 6oz but still I needed to break out the prem clothes (she wore prem tights til she was 4 months). I even had to commandeer one of DD1's dolls cardigans as nothing else fitted (16" doll at that).

Given my childrens size I have always felt clothes were made much too wide and the feet in baby gros were never long enough. The only way much of their clothes fitted was by wearing cloth nappies for added bulk .

It would be nice to be able to buy baby clothes for short heavy babies/tall heavy babies/tall light babies etc. so you wouldn't spend a fortune on clothes that were either worn for a week or never bought enough in the early sizes. I was told to expect a big baby so bought almost nothing in newborn and ended up having to go out and get loads soon after DD1 was born

OrmIrian · 13/05/2009 11:42

Yes. All mine are too long for normal sizes. And now DS#1 is too wide too

feedthegoat · 13/05/2009 11:44

My ds is 3.6 and is just starting to need age 4 to 5 trousers. It doesn't seem more than a few months since a bought the last round but he seems to grow in bursts. He is slim so I have to buy adjustable waists. People always comment on his height and think he's older but I don't honestly think he's really unusually tall. I think he's about 105 cm and just under 18kg. Tops aren't usually a problem (except Debenhams!).

squilly · 13/05/2009 11:45

dd was a teeny birth weight and took around 4 months to catch up. A few weeks later she was in the next age grouping up (ie, 3-6 months but was wearing 6-9) and she's continued to do this.

Now she's 8 and wears 9 yrs in some brands, 10 in others. She's tall but slim, so I'd say that the clothing sizes are definitely out!

It's nothing to worry about....just harder as they get older as you want to keep them in kiddy clothes for as long as poss but end up having to look at pre-teen ranges before you're/they're ready.

I really think that children must be getting bigger these days - my son was 10lb 7oz and quite long when he was born. His going home outfit was 3-6 months.

My daughter was 7lb 13oz but still long and at 8 weeks she is in 3-6 month clothing.

My nephew will be 5 in June and wears age 9-10 clothes.

My family are quite tall but not outrageously so. Also some brands come up bigger than others and there appears to be a lot in the difference.

HarryB · 13/05/2009 13:29

Must be a combination of kids getting bigger and clothes not being made to a set standard size. Just put another pair of trousers on DS from NEXT(he managed to poo on the last ones ) and they fit perfectly - size 6-9 months. Mind you,I find that NEXT sizes are bizarre for adults too. Gap are on the small side I've found whereas Jo Jo Bebe are more generous.

My DS2 is wearing 18-24 month clothes at 16 months. His twin sister is wearing 9-12 month clothes!

FAQinglovely · 13/05/2009 13:32

does anyone else wonder if it's all the mum's of tall than average children that post on MN - and all the children of shorties don't (also had children in clothes way bigger than their actual age)

ingles2 · 13/05/2009 13:36

ds1 is 9 and I bought him some H&M jeans yesterday age 13.
ds2 is 8 today, I bought him some age 7 jeans yesterday as his age 6 are a bit small, poor little thing

Umlellala · 13/05/2009 13:38

yup, though it has slowed somewhat. Ds has been wearing 9-12mth since 5mths, only just growing out of babygros now, at nearly 10mths.

3yr old dd on the other hand can actually still wear his 9-12mth trousers as leggings and shorts she is so skinny! Reckon they'll be sharing tops soon, probably not dresses .

HarryB · 13/05/2009 13:39

You know, I'm really a size 8 but wear a 14 so DS must take after me

Both my DCs wear clothes for older children - my DD is almost 14 months and she has a mixture of 12-18, 18-24 and age 2-3 clothes. My DS is 3.2 and most of his clothes are 5-6. Me and DH are giants so it is not really suprising. Don't buy too many baby clothes because they grow out of them sooooo quickly. My DCs were not born large because they were both induced 3 weeks early and they started in tiny baby clothes, but they both grew very very long very quickly and some things got worn once before going to the charity shop. My DD started weaning at 6m wearing a 9-12 month babygro, as did my DS!

CrushWithEyeliner · 13/05/2009 13:48

Yes yes yes DD is 2.5 and currently in age 4 - she is so tall. Friends thought I was lying and I showed them the labels.

bruffin · 13/05/2009 14:01

DS 13 although small when he was born soon climbed the centiles and wore clothes 1 to 2 years ahead. Now at 13 he has outgrown most children sizes and is in small men although a few 16yr old t shirts fit him.

DD 11 same size as DS when she was born, was always in the right size for her age until the last year when she had a massive growth spurt and is now in 13 yr old clothes or a size 6/8 woman.
To be honest in a few stores I have found children's clothes have grown wider rather taller. In Adams an elasticated skirt for her height was to big even for her hips and fell straight to the floor.
