My 11mo DD sounded like she said "Hi" 3 times to my friends that were visiting a few days ago......and then when they were leavin she was in my arms at the front door and we were waving them off and I swear she said "bye bye" when she was waving!

Is this too soon? am I just imagining this?

I don't think it's too soon or that you are imagining it. It's surprising how suddenly and quickly they pick things up. You must be very proud. : )

Meglet · 10/05/2009 16:41

Ds's was "balloon" at 12 months. Not mummy or daddy .

jeanjeannie · 10/05/2009 21:10

My 11 mnth DD has just started to say Hello and Bye Bye. She also says Tata (we call my DP that) and Mama. It's all very clear and precise. Bit of a shocker as she refuses to roll, crawl or make much effort to get off her bum; obviously saving all her energy for communication! Her elder sister is 2.5yrs and still barely says a thing

Pea123nut · 10/05/2009 21:24

Both my girls started talking about that age. I think some girls do talk quite young. The trouble is stopping them from talking once they've started . Its not too soon, they all develop at totally different rates...enjoy

thisisyesterday · 10/05/2009 21:25

ds1 said "gack" (quack/duck) at about 12 months

ds2 said "dut" (duck) at about 18 months.

My DD spoke very early - first recogniseable words from 6 months. So def not too early.

SausageRoleModel · 10/05/2009 21:31

my 5 month old very clearly said "eggwump" yesterday.

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 10/05/2009 21:33

DD has been saying duck since about 8 months. We haven't progressed much beyond that at 16 months tbh

chipkid · 10/05/2009 21:34

dd progressed from mamma and dadda to "no way" thanks to her big brother! she was a very early talker!

simpson · 10/05/2009 21:35

Eyeballs - my DD (15mths) and DS (now 3.7) also said "duck" as their first word!!

Think DD was 10mths ish
and DS 13mths

neversaydie · 10/05/2009 22:09

We had 'da' (Ta) from 8 months, and 'bikkie' and 'cheers' about a month later. First full sentence was 'no I don't want to' at about 14-15 months. At just 2, he told me that one of his presents 'needs batteries, I think'. Probably slightly ahead of the game for a little boy, but we never realised at the time. He remains extremely articulate.

squeaver · 10/05/2009 22:14

Daddy x 10,000 a day - around about her 1st birthday.

Housemum · 10/05/2009 22:31

Round about first birthday is usual - but varies a lot. Some say boys are slower than girls (I only have girls) 2 of mine were jabbering away at 12 months with about a dozen words each. DD3 16 mths and only has about 3 words - heyyo (hello), no (usually at dinner) and mummum (which either means mummy or food, haven't worked out which yet as it's usually me that gives her meals!)

DoNotAnnoy · 10/05/2009 22:33

I haven't got a clue

gigglewitch · 10/05/2009 22:35

ds1 and dd both (5 yrs apart) said shoes as their first word around 11-12mo.
ds2 was far more 'textbook' and said "daddy" and "ball" (footy nut) at 10mo.

ILoveDolly · 10/05/2009 22:37

Everything was 'Dah!' (Dog, Daddy, Duck) Then one day she enunciated, very clearly, 'IRAN' (too much news?). Don't think it counts though!

Servalan · 10/05/2009 23:46

Snap gigglewitch - My DD's first word was "shoes" too - think she was about 13-14mo.

Quattrocento · 10/05/2009 23:53

DD - "coo" (it meant dog, and dogs were coos for the next year)
DS - babaloons (balloons)

MrsMerryHenry · 10/05/2009 23:55

"Daddy" - at 10 mos.

scaredoflove · 10/05/2009 23:57

1st could say teddy, duck, bye, hi, oof (woof) shoes, dangad (grandad) daddy, mum, mamar (grandma) from 10 months

2nd also 10 months first word was flower and the above

3rd & 4th didn't speak until much much older (both special needs)

I loved the learning language stage, the human brain is an amazing thing

PinkTulips · 11/05/2009 00:01

dd - 'mama' at 7 months (accompanied by pointing at me so no wishful thinking there), then 'dada' and 'cat' less than a month later. she quicly progressed to 'eh-oh' (hello) and 'bye-bye' and i distinctly remember her shocking mol by saying 'tantu' (thank you) at 11 months. she's still a chatterbug at 4

ds1 - mama at 7/8 months followed by 'hiya', 'dada', 'bye-bye' and 'uh-oh' very quickly. he also never shuts up at almost 3

ds2 is 3 months and is just mastering the cooing and gurgling stuff which is far cuter imo

Sherbit · 11/05/2009 00:42

DD said the dogs name at about 10 months, then came 'dada', sadly was lot later before saying 'mum'. Now at 3yrs old I wish he would bloody shut up! hahaha. Enjoy that period of time its great.

Claire2009 · 11/05/2009 00:47

DD - Mama at 10 mths, Mummy, daddy, Doggy, Birdy at 14mths and lots of babble.

DS - Mama at 9 mths, and now at 2yo he can say ; hiya, yah, yep, ta, mama = sometimes Mum.

jellybelly25 · 11/05/2009 12:34

dd1 - "HIYAAA!" And lots of waving, at around 10-11mo, then not much else till a few months later with "Cat" and "light". "Hello Grandad" were first two words together at about 18mo. he was very pleased

dd2 - "turtle" at 9mo, then all sorts of things. "Oh dear", repeatedly too. she now just 2yo and talks CONTINUOUSLY, if she can't think of real stuff to say she sings in jibberish. Then when you say to her, "say hello to so and so" she buries her face and won't say a damn thing!

I think for a while they say things that only you can understand though cos you are the one who has seen them pointing at whatever it is and making a word for it. So I dont' think 11mo is too young at all.
