DS is 2 next week, I still keep it on all the time he's asleep. DP thinks I'm a freak and that no normal person would still have it on.

He said "go ask your freaky mates what they think" (that'll be you lot then )

Ours has only just been turned off (well it gave up the ghost) and our 2 boys share a room aged and nearly 3.

I think tho that it was fab as I could tell them to be quiet through it when they should have been sleeping!

thisisyesterday · 09/05/2009 22:23

erm, never used one for either baby.

2 is a bit excessive i reckon.

CMOTdibbler · 09/05/2009 22:23

Never had one. Unless you have a mansion, I don't see the point

ds is 3.6 and I'm currently sat here listening to his snoring. I know it's bad but I can't wean myself of it plus I like to intercept him before he starts wandering if he opens his door. (Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it )

Meglet · 09/05/2009 22:25

I used one with ds until he was 22 months and only stopped as it had to go in his baby sisters bedroom. If dd hadn't arrived I would have left if in with ds.

Glad to hear your DP realises mnetters know everything .

MerlinsBeard · 09/05/2009 22:25

Stopped when DS2 was about 2 (shared a room with DS1 who would have been 4!) but not used one at all with DS3 despite us now being in a house instead of a flat!

giddykipper · 09/05/2009 22:26

That's my logic too Mutt. We don't have a mansion by any stretch, but DP does snore VERY loud and I'm worried that if DS was crying in the night I wouldn't hear him. Saying that though, he's a very good sleeper and I can't remember the last time he woke in the night.

I guess I should turn off the CCTV camera over his bed though...

Never had one with any of mine, they were all loud enough to let me know if they needed me and I did not want to obssess over every little intake of breath. IMO 2 is excessive, however that is for me. I would not think another person was odd if they did still use it then IYSWIM. It is a horses for courses thing, as long as you are not hugging it to you like a life line or turning the telly down so you can hear the monitor better (or other extreme behaviour) then it is up to you!

Only ever used baby monitor for when DSs asleep in the house and I wanted to go into garden, or vice versa (LOL, DS in pram in garden, me in house watching Jeremy Vile). Mind you, I am rather slatternly not a v anxious kind of person.
IMO, babies shout plenty loud enough when they are awake, and any other problems ie coughing, dreaming noisily, being snuffely I really, really did not want to hear about in the middle of the night.
More serious stuff like vomiting or, God beware, SIDS would not really be picked up by standard monitor anyway, and your DS is v mature 2.
So, probably depends on size of your house as well. If huuuuuge you may need monitor to hear him from nursery whilst you are sitting in drawing room having grapes peeled by your butler. (Sorry if I am getting inappropriate, am a bit sozzled, hic)

voyagerfan · 09/05/2009 22:29

would be turning ds's off around now (nearly 4!) as can hear him anyway but did keep it for extra long time due to asthma and me worried about his breathing if he had it.

giddykipper · 09/05/2009 22:29

I think he thinks I'm too obsessed by it, that I might relax more if I didn't hear every little cough.

He doesn't have a real problem with it, it was said in jest but it just got me thinking.

My DD is 14mnths and her baby monitor has stopped working properly this evening, the mic picks up very intermittently.

I can't decide whether or not to buy a new one or just leave her door open so I can hear her. Hmmmm. I don't think two is excessive as I am quite a heavy sleeper and not sure I would wake up without it (although DP would, this could be a cunning plan!).

ravenAK · 09/05/2009 22:38

Never had one. Have dc who are quite capable of making themselves heard all over 4 storey terraced house

But if it will bother you to get rid, just leave it in place. Sooner or later you will have either a new baby or ds bringing his gf home from Uni - one of those would probably be good reason to move it...

Slickbird · 09/05/2009 22:42

Lol at your DH's description of us. (You know, I think he may be right...)

I'd go with the sozzled Pacific on this one. If your house isn't too big and you'd hear him crying anyway, then I'd say it's time to stop. I too have a really annoying snoring DH but I can still hear my kids if they cry - I believe we are all programmed that way. Fair play, I'm quite a light sleeper tho.

If you can't wean yourself off the monitor, maybe you need to have another baby.

paranoidmother · 09/05/2009 22:44

The name says it all i'm a paranoidmother and can't give up the monitor yet. DD is 4 and DS is 2 and they share a room but wouldn't be able to hear them very well when downstairs from the their room or in our room from theirs either.

hf128219 · 09/05/2009 22:45

Stopped at 12 months,

PortoPandemico · 09/05/2009 22:45

We moved to Belgium when dd was just 2. Didn't have enough adaptors so that was that. Mind you by that age she had well enough developed lungs that you could HEAR her if she yellled. Even now, 3 years on, I can clearly hear the call of "MUMMMMYYYY"

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 09/05/2009 22:51

dd's 4 and 3 - still have monitor by my side. I like to hear if they roll out of bed or get up to go to the loo or something. And I like to hear the creepy little ghost kids running around up there sometimes when I know full well the dd's are asleep in bed.

mychildrenarebarmy · 09/05/2009 22:55

We don't use ours for sleep time anymore. DD is 6, DS is 2 and they share a room. It is VERY useful though when DD has friends to play and they disappear upstairs. It means if there are any disagreements I can have more insight into who is telling the truth!

cory · 09/05/2009 22:58

Never had one, house not so large that I couldn't hear them from wherever I am. By the time dcs were 2 they were sleeping in beds rather than cots anyway, so if they wanted me they could come and get me.

fledtoscotland · 10/05/2009 01:26

never used one (apart from holidays and visits to relatives). our house isnt that big that i can't hear DC cry/wake/play/wreck their rooms. They are now 19months and 8months.
