When did your DC move out of the cot?

Hey,

What age should you move your dc from their cot into a bed?
We have a cot bed and my ds has found he can climb out of it, now he won't stop. I'm worried he is going to hurt himself. All you hear is THUMP then ds crying. I am not hearing him babble or make any noise before the thud, and when we run through he just looks at us and laughs.
We have the base as low down as it can go, and i have no idea how he is managing it really. I stood him in his cot for ages to see if he would do it when i'm there, he wont. I can't figure it out, i am guessing he hooks his foot/toes over the edge and pulls himself over.

What should i do?

we moved ds at 2 yrs old as his sister was due when he was 2.6 and we wanted him to get used to it
with dd she was about 2.4
she wasn't climbing out of it and in some ways I wish we'd left it until she was as now she keeps getting up in the evenings

nowwearefour · 03/05/2009 20:33

time to take the sides of and turn it into a bed. how old is he? is he in a sleeping bag still? we moved dd1 out aged 2.5 years but she never climbs anything. dd2 is about to turn 2 just discovered getting out of her bag and climbing into her cot bed. when she climbs out we will put her into her bed....

Tonight, possibly, depending on how it goes! {smile]
He's fast asleep atm, he's 2.10.

thisisyesterday · 03/05/2009 20:39

i took mine out when they were able to climb out

Jojay · 03/05/2009 20:39

DS was 1.9, as DS2 was due when he was 1.11.

If he's climbig out, I'd go for it.

purepurple · 03/05/2009 20:43

when they were able to climb out of it and jump on the floor
or on the window sill in DD's case
Dh went to the shop and came running in, shouting "she's on the bloody window sill". Never seen him move so fast. She used to climb into her wardrobe too, it had a cupboard door that opened outwards and she used to climb into the hole. She had a v. small room.

Rollergirl1 · 03/05/2009 20:45

We moved DD out of her cot into a bed straight after her 2nd bday, mainly because DS was due a month later and we wanted her to be settled.

We were very lucky because she took to it really well and didn't get out of bed atall. It was almost like she didn't realise she could get out for the first six months as she would call for us rather then getting out and coming looking herself. I was amazed that it was such a smooth transition.

minxthemanx · 03/05/2009 20:48

Er, well DS2 is 2.10 and still in the cot - hasn't climbed out yet, and still seems to fit ok! Spose I'd better get a bed before he's too much older...

insertwittynicknameHERE · 03/05/2009 20:49

We moved DD into a normal sized single bed when she was nearly 13mo. We put one of those side things up that yo can get from Mothercare (I think Argos do them too). DD is now 17mo and has slept like a trooper in her bed, hasn't fallen out yet.

We put a stair gate up at the top of our top tier of stairs (two tier landing) and now She has now moved into the box bedroom in preparation for DD2 coming we have put a stair gate at the top of the first tier of stairs.

ohdearwhatamess · 03/05/2009 20:52

Moved ds1 out at 18 months because he was climbing out (and ds2 was imminent).

canttouchthis · 03/05/2009 20:56

moved DS into a bed at 2yo because he had outgrown the cot. he is in a double bed because we were given it from a relative (hardly used, surplus to requirements, so didn't see point of buying a brand new one!).

anyone else put their DC into a double bed or am I the only one???

MrsTittleMouse · 03/05/2009 21:01

My DD would love a double bed - more room for the legions of stuffed toys that she insists on having in bed with her.

She's still in her cot bed at 2 and a half though, as she's not at all interested in climbing. The idea is that we'll take the sides off as soon as she attempts to climb out and use it as a bed.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 03/05/2009 21:03

Gro bag do really good 'Bed Bags' type things, basically you zip them into bed so harder to roll out.......I'll just get the link for you.
Sad as he is growing up!!

Hey,
Thank you all for the many replies.
He is 16 mo, I honestly think he went to bed a little angel and woke up the opposite one morning about a month ago.
It is a cot bed that we have, but i am expecting dc2 in Sept so i was hoping to just get ds a little bed when the time came that dc2 needed the cot. Looks like that's not going to happen.
Thing is, like a few of you mention, i know if he is in a bed, i will find him hidden under toys, behind the door or something in the morning lol.
He isn't in a grobag at the moment, but only because it was getting warmer and i only have one thin one - with poppers, he used to burst out of it and take his pj's off anyway so it was useless.
Trying, thanks for that link, i have never seen those bedding sets before. They look good. Worth a try anyway.
Ds is in a travel cot tonight - i got my dad to bring it down from my parents house.

Hmm. Well that didn't go so well.

After much waking and crying during the night he ended up in our bed, as usual. This morning he said his new bed "isn't safe".

canttouchthis · 04/05/2009 20:17

Supernanny's 'Sleep Seperation Technique' works wonders for that type of thing cadelaide. We done it the once and we've never had any bother since we started with the cot to bed thing with DS. I like my sleep too much to have DS in bed with me.
He is in a gro-bag too just now, but we obviously want to get him into the duvet eventually. there's no rush for that just now, we are just relieved he's adjusted well to sleeping in a normal bed.

glucose · 04/05/2009 20:27

DD was leaping out at 2.5 so she went willingly into toddler bed

hellywobs · 06/05/2009 12:05

About a week before my son's third birthday. He wasn't a climber and I didn't need the cot for a second baby so it worked fine for us.

Gateau · 06/05/2009 13:00

Our DS was around 21 months when he went in to the double bed in his room.
It wasn't our intention that he leave his cot so quickly but he made it VERY clear that he hated his cot and wanted to be in the big bed. So there he is.
Yes, he is currently going througg a stage of getting out of it when we are trying to settle him, but once he goes to sleep, that's usually him for the night.

Gateau · 06/05/2009 13:03

As an addendum, we did wonder at first if a double bed was suitable for a little one, but it has turned out to be absolutley fine and DS LOVES it.
He sleeps wither at the wall, or right bang in the middle of it and looks REALLY cosy. And with a double bed there is much less risk of him falling out than a single bed.

canttouchthis · 06/05/2009 18:48

that's true Gateau. they do look cosy when they sleep in the double. think we must be the only two mums with kids in doubles!

We would have bought a single if we hadn't be given the double by family, but made good use of it since we've got it now.

DS stays in the bed now (very recently though!) and is content to fall asleep on his own.

I agree with many though that there's no rush to move them into a bed, and if he hadn't outgrown his cot he'd still be in it until he was around 3 years old.

StealthPolarPig · 06/05/2009 18:51

DS will move fairly soon as we are having a baby in September. He's just turned 2 at the moment and hopefully it will be in the next couple of months. He doesn't climb out of his cot. I think he'll be fine as he sleeps fine in our bed whether we're there or not, and change of that sort just doesn't seem to bother him. I remember when we moved him from basket to cot - he looked so tiny, DH was worried he'd put him down too hard and hit his head, DS just snoozed
