'sleep trainer clocks' - what do you recommend??

Dd (2.9) is coming into our room at 6am - far too early in my book! I was going to get one of the bunny clocks to encourage her to stay in her room until later but they seem to have some bad reviews (noisy mechanism, tricky to set time). I just wondered what other MNers might suggest? Do they work or is there a different style that works a bit better?

We have had success with the Bunny clock, we had it for dd2 when she was about 3, now dd3 uses it, she's 4. I don't particularly like the way it looks, and one of the ears has broken, but it's still fulfilling its purpose as a child-deterrent for us in the morning, several years on.

get a plug in nightlight adn a timer instead

then tell dd she can get up when the light comes on

you can adjust the timer a bit each day, or every 2 days

Mung · 10/03/2009 15:18

DS has a bunny cl0ock and although its gret for keeping him in bed it is rather noisy when it pops up. This wakes him up, so we never get to sleep past 7am. I think there is one that has a picture of a sleeping bunny on it and it changes to an awake bunny...this may be quieter.

we used to use a light on a timer switch and i would come on at 7 meaning that he could get up. this used to wake him up too, although a dim light would work well. We do the same for DD.

nailpolish · 10/03/2009 15:19

we did this very successfully
i used to hear dds 1 and 2 awake in their room but not getting out of bed til the light came on

they used to come through and announce "the light is on!"

Fennel · 10/03/2009 15:20

The light on timer switch used to wake ours but the bunny clock only does so when they are more or less awake anyway.

I know there are others that might be nicer out there, but I have to stick up for the bunny, it's given us several years of decent sleep.

bodiddly · 10/03/2009 15:21

there is another thread on this at the moment here

nondomesticgoddess · 10/03/2009 15:31

Ooh - thank you bodiddly - I thought there were probably threads on the subject here, but couldn't find them!
I am now about to investigate timers and lights!

We have just bought dd (nearly4) a bunny clock and last night was the first night we used it. Great excitement etc. Bunny demonstrated with eyes shut and eyes open, dd demonstrated how she would stay in bed if bunny's eyes were shut, etc.

Marvellous.

This morning at 6am, dd comes into our bedroom complaining that her bunny clock isn't working, as bunny is still asleep.

Bless her. More work required I think....

bodiddly · 10/03/2009 19:30

mine tried that orangina ... it needs reinforcing with a sticker chart for a week or two as well!

sandra270 · 04/11/2009 14:46

I would recommend the BabyZoo Sleeptrainer. It is a lot cuter than the Bunny clock and a lot more affordable. www.mybabyzoo.com

ohmeohmy · 04/11/2009 15:40

I've just ordered the gro-clock sleep trainer. Had a Thomas one but not obvious enough for DS to read without his glasses on.

mrsmarzipan · 06/11/2009 14:50

I have the bunny clock that changes pictures from bunny in bed to bunny in park with sun. Its very easy to set and quiet too.
It was worked a treat with DD who is almost 3yrs (got it when she was about 20 months) and she got it straight away. She may still wake up before then but she knows to stay in her room and not disturb us unless a toilet visit is needed.

We have gone from 5.30 am EVERY morning to 7.00am, worth every penny!

You can get others in argos by the way and they are cheaper (don't know how good they are though)

ImSoNotTelling · 06/11/2009 14:56

We've got the same one as mrsmarzipan. it works for us. did have to take it apart to screw the bulbs in properly when it arrived though, not great quality.

BUT I saw a peppa pig one in a shop on holiday recently which was half the price of teh otehrs!

hold on will look

ImSoNotTelling · 06/11/2009 15:13

found it but unfortunately it has shite reviews.

TBH I nearly didn't buy the bunny one we've got due to reviews but a friends has them and said they were good (if flimsy) so we went ahead. this is the one we've got.

sandra270 · 21/01/2010 13:39

www.mybabyzoo.com . They have very nice sleeptrainers.

Spottydog · 21/01/2010 13:44

we do the same as nailpolish, a small lamp on a timer plug, has worked really well.

countrylover · 22/01/2010 09:36

we used fairy lights on a timer for a year or so and then bought a gro-clock. it comes with a little book you can read to them which re-inforces the message of staying in bed until the sun comes up. (it's a moon before 7am or whatever time you choose to set)

it's now so much part of our routine that when i say goodnight if i don't say 'wait for the sun' after 'goodnight, i love you' then DS says 'mummy you didn't say wait for the sun!'

Fennel · 22/01/2010 09:58

These days our bunny clock, 5 years old and on its second child, is a "worm clock", as both ears have fallen off now. But it still works. dd3 (5) gets up when the worm wakes up

mrsshackleton · 22/01/2010 10:04

I have mrsmarzipans and it has changed our lives. You do need to spend a lot o time with a Phillips mini screwdriver on it, though, as the mechanism is v delicate. But worth every penny

MrsBadger · 22/01/2010 10:14

(sandra, once was fine but any more and it starts to look like advertising, esp as these are your only posts on MN )

angel1976 · 22/01/2010 11:33

The gro-clock! JUst got it for my DS who is almost 2 and he is very excited about it and it has reduced his 'mummy mummy' cries! He how calls for me once and then goes silence but will call again excitedly for me to tell me the sun has woken up! You can buy it from this website for only £34.95 and it's free delivery if you opt for super saver. I did that on Monday and it arrived Thursday! I love the clock.

ohmeohmy · 22/01/2010 11:47

second the gro-clock

MrsTriangle · 22/01/2010 22:31

gro clock for us too.

MollieO · 22/01/2010 22:37

I got the bunny clock. Complete waste of money (at least with my ds). He would come into my bedroom to wake me up and show me the ears weren't working - and wouldn't go back to bed. His next trick was to alter the time on the clock to make the ears pop up - and come and show me .

PussinJimmyChoos · 22/01/2010 22:37

DS is waking early atm too and its hard work and I was thinking about one of these clocks but would feel bad knowing that he was awake, but just lying there waiting for the bunny to wake up or whatever...I doubt they actually go back to sleep do they?
