Yippppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

I am happy because for months now everyone has been asking 'Is your DS walking yet?' etc etc and I would reply 'ummmm, he's isn't even standing yet' and then feel bad because I'd get sympathetic looks from them while their baby was running laps round the room at 10 months old or something...

I never worried that he wouldn't get there and I put it down to genes that he'd stand / walk late. Anyway, out of the blue today he finally pulled himself up on some furniture and he looked soooooooooooo proud! But not as proud as mummy and daddy

So for those of you with babies who aren't running marathons yet, they will get there in the end!

Lovely

LuckySalem · 30/01/2009 21:46

Oh brilliant CONGRATULATIONS

Tigerschick · 30/01/2009 21:46

Well done him!
I remember worrying when DD wasn't sitting up - it was so exciting when she did

random · 30/01/2009 21:49

yep dd1 was 18 months before she could walk...now shes 30 and i can barely remember it

alicecrail · 30/01/2009 21:49

Yay!!! I am very pleased for you. My dd has just started walking in the last 2weeks and now its her favourite thing to do. People kept asking if she was walking yet and i had to keep saying "no, but nearly" (when she was nowhere near) I think lots of babies just have no interest when they are so content with what they are already doing, which is very sensible! I mean, why walk when you can crawl so much faster?!

GreenPeas · 30/01/2009 21:52

Well done him! My dd was similarly relaxed about standing/walking - didn't walk until 18mths and I can't remember when she first stood (bad mummy...).

Try not to worry - much easier said than done - and enjoy his achievements at his own pace! (He'll be running before you know it...)

muppetgirl · 30/01/2009 21:53

well done!!!

ilikeyoursleeves · 30/01/2009 21:53

I know, why do we need to 'justify' why our babies aren't doing what everyone else expects of them? I sometimes find myself too saying 'ummm no he's not walking yet but he can do A, B and C' as if that will make folk think 'ah well at least he can do something!'.

I kept saying he will get there when he's ready but that still didn't stop everyone and their granny buying him a baby walker at Christmas, as if he'd suddenly see it and think 'aha! time to walk!'.

I find old ladies very annoying in this

'awww how old is he ducky?
15 months
is he walking?
no, not yet
crawling?
No not crawling though he does bum shuffle a bit

and other mums like to tell me their 10 month old is entering the next London Marathon!

My large boy took ages to hold his head, sit up unaided so he's just following his path very steadily, it just doesn't follow what society expects from child development!

petetong · 30/01/2009 22:14

I'll tell you one thing, it really doesn't matter what age they do things. Unless there are really serious problems. They will all end up walking, reading and writing and it doesn't make a jot of difference what age they started it. My dd started walking at 9 months but she doesn't walk any better than anybody else does now that she is nearly 13.

dragonbutter · 30/01/2009 22:16

YAY! Well done.

nappyaddict · 30/01/2009 22:31

ilikeyoursleeves - is he a fast crawler/bum shuffler? DS was really fast at crawling and didn't walk until he was 21 months. He took his first steps at 14 months but obviously thought crawling was much better!

muppetgirl · 30/01/2009 22:40

my bum shuffler is quite slow, techinque slowly developing but getting there!

ds 1 in contrast was dragging rocking chairs over to doors to turn keys and get into the garden -you couldn't get two nore different brothers!

nappyaddict · 30/01/2009 22:51

lol how old was he when started bum shuffling?

muppetgirl · 30/01/2009 22:56

christmas day! So about 4 weeks now. He didn't really roll and hates being on his tummy. He's so content with the toys he has in front of him and is no where near as nosey as his brother was at this age!

nappyaddict · 30/01/2009 23:11

Awww that was a nice christmas present!! So he must have been about 14 months .... DS was a similar age I think when he learnt to crawl properly. From about 11 months he did a commando crawl where he dragged himself a bit but that was quite hard work. Then when he took his first steps at 14 months we just presumed that would be it but oh no then he had to go and learn how to crawl properly!

ilikeyoursleeves · 31/01/2009 14:00

nappyaddict yes he is pretty fast at crawling so he probably doesn't see the need to walk yet!

My dss were late walkers and I got sooooo fed up of the comments.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/02/2009 09:57

My DD didn't walk until 2, and crawled for 11 months...you can imagine the comments I got!!

BopTheAlien · 02/02/2009 22:59

My DS also pulled himself up to stand for the first time two and a half weeks ago (allright, Jan 16th, yes I have the date engraved on my brain) aged 15m!! And I was exactly the same, jumping for joy, ringing dh at work, and so happy to see the proud, proud look on his little face (DS, that is) - it's so exciting when you've waited a while and seen all his little peers standing, cruising, walking independently long before.

And I do exactly the same thing of saying "no, he's not walking yet, but he's good at blah blah blah" as if I have to compensate and I KNOW that they all develop at their own rate and I don't WANT to get into all that stuff, but it's so difficult not to! I don't like it, because it makes me feel as if I'm putting him down somehow, and I'm actually so very proud of him... like we all are, I suppose

ilikeyoursleeves · 03/02/2009 22:37

Well done Bop! It's fab eh? My DS has now started cruising along the TV bench and is very proud Your DS will be doing that too soon!

Fanjo - how many months after 2 was she? Was there any underlying problems or was she just late?

JoyS · 05/02/2009 20:34

Well done! My DD never rolled over, crawled at 11 months and walked at 19 months so I got all the comments too!

mawbroon · 05/02/2009 20:45

My ds was 15 months too when he first pulled up. He then spent the next 5 months standing there holding on wondering what to do next!

At 20 months, he took his first steps. 2 little steps one day and then up and down the kitchen the next.

Your ds will do the next stage when he's ready.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2009 20:47

nappyaddict - she was almost exactly 2! took some steps a few days before her birthday and then stopped for a couple of weeks and then was off!

She has slightly low muscle tone and hypermobility.
