When did your dc's stop having an afternoon nap?

DD is 18months and has started to take ages to get to sleep during the day but still gets cranky and sleepy between 11-1.

She has missed a few day time naps or had late naps which I hate as it means she will be up all night. She goes to bed way too late as it is.

DS gave his up at 3.4yrs. Tried to keep them going as long as poss! Most of his peers gave them up between 2 1/2 to 3. 18 months sounds a bit young to go through the whole day but they are all different I guess.

Doodle2U · 30/01/2009 18:53

DS was 1 year and 11 months when he dropped it and he then went to bed at 6.30pm.

DD was about 2.5 when she dropped hers but had a tendancy to nod off whilst I cooked tea. We allowed her half an hour - any longer and she'd be up all night.

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 19:03

I would not mind if dd dropped her nap and went to bed at 6.30, she has always stayed awake way too late sometimes she finally falls asleep at 10.30.

But knowing my luck she would drop her nap and still manage to stay awake all night.

DD's started being a nightmare to get down in the day for the last few weeks. So I stopped offering them to see what happened. She only has a nap every few days now, and goes down quite early. She's 18 months too. It's so much nicer as even though she's a bit tired we're less stressed because there's no battle to get her to sleep.

shootfromthehip · 30/01/2009 19:10

I often find that the more daytime sleep they have, the more they need. My DD stopped hers at 2.5 yrs and DS 2.2 still has nealy 2 hrs a day. If you can try and keep them active as much as possible (not easy in this weather) and fire them into bed as early as possible. My two go to bed at 6.45pm (both early risers- 6 am) and they really need that much sleep. You may find if you sort the even sleeping out then the daytime one will be easier to manage.

lostinnappies · 30/01/2009 19:11

ds1 was 18 months

bergentulip · 30/01/2009 19:17

My DS1 is nearly 4 and still has one.

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 19:20

god that would be hevan to get dd to sleep at 6.45. We did go through a stage where she went to bed at 7.30 - 8pm but that was a long time ago and it is always difficult to get her to sleep.

I know its terrible but I know take her to bed and watch a dvd untill she goes to sleep.

the problem is she was always bf to sleep or rocked. so now she is too big to rock to sleep and I have stopped bf, I dont know what else to do. I know it sounds so weak but as I am on my own with dd I just feel it will be so stressful doing the cry it out thing or anything like that. I have tried it before.

hi there, my dd is almost 3 and still has a nap. she also has a tendency to go to bed late and until very, very recently she was quite reluctant to go to bed in the evenings. personally i think for children like that (and their exhausted parents!) a nap is a real godsend!!! they need it to relax and catch up on their sleep, otherwise they get too wound up for sleep. we need it to stop ourselves from killing them!

I would say persevere with trying to get her to sleep in the day, it is probably just a phase and she'll start enjoying her naps more rather than less- my dd now sometimes asks for one (I know you don't believe it- I wouldn't have either a year ago!).

re difficult bedtimes- have you read the no cry sleep solution? there is a toddler version too which is v good for this type of thing.

we really worked hard to work with, rather than against, dd's reluctance to go to sleep and i think it is slowly paying off as she now no longer sees bedtime as a punishment... well most of the time anyway!

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 20:06

i think the problem with the naps is they are too long. But today she had a nap for just over an hour and she fell asleep just before 8pm. I think I will have to make sure she only naps for an hour each day.

I have got the no cry sleep solution but didn't bother putting it into practise. I think I will give it another go.

Does your dd go to sleep alone? if not how do you get her to sleep?

DS1 was a few months past his third birthday. DS2 was a bit earlier but I can't remember exactly. Keep it going as long as you can. They really need the sleep.

eNABlemetobebetter · 30/01/2009 20:09

My eldest was 4 1/2, can't remember with DD and DS2 still naps after lunch and he is 3 1/2.

artichokes · 30/01/2009 20:11

dd dropped hers at 25 months.
she then started going to bed at 6.30pm and sleeping 'til 7.15am.

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 20:11

yes i think i will keep it going as long as possible as its the only time i get to myself. And if she doesn't nap she gets very moody and even more clingly than usual...

my dd is 2.3 and has been having 2.5-3 hr naps recently, which is nice unless you need to go out!

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 20:13

really and what time does she go to sleep?

dd has her longest naps in the pushchair which is good as I can get a few things done while out and about..

my DD is in the process she's 18 months too .

Its definately time, she burbles away until about 9pm if she's had a nap, or is fast asleep by 7 if not.

Its me who's resisting. DD2 goes to afternoon nursery, and I enjoy my hour on my own!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/01/2009 20:17

Well she goes to bed about 730 but plays with her cuddly toys for 30-60 mins, she is quite happy though and then just drops off so we don't mind, she does tend to wake quite early though, 715 this morning was a lie in!

She also wakes once a night usually for a few minutes and yells, which is really annoying!!

She has just started playgroup and I think it is tiring her out!!

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 20:18

ohforfox - i would be so happy if dd was in bed by 7pm. how does your dd get to sleep at night?

OP posts:
Sycamoretree · 30/01/2009 20:18

DD was almost 2. I was DEVASTATED! Seemed like everyone else got at least 6 months or even 18 months more feet up at lunchtime than I did.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/01/2009 20:18

I must point out that for a while at 18 months DD was having much shorter naps and they have got longer as she got older, so don't give up hope!

2pt4kids · 30/01/2009 20:18

DS1 stopped napping at 20 months. He is 3.4yrs and only naps on the odd day if he is poorly or has had a late night.
He goes to bed 7pm and sleeps till 7am like a log.

Ohforfoxsake · 30/01/2009 20:26

I don't know NSM! If she's not fallen asleep in the day we will have been out to a play-place in the afternoon, so I guess she's just tired.

newlysinglemummy · 30/01/2009 20:31

maybe i need to get dd out more so she will just drop off too, its just in this weather you really dont feel like doing much...

OP posts:
smartiejake · 30/01/2009 20:38

DD1 was 2.5 and I was really annoyed as dd2 was only 3 months old and I stopped getting my little bit of peace each day (as they seemed to nap at a similar time)

DD2 loved her naps and was nearly 4 when hers finally went.
