how long can your toddler stay still for??

sounds like a strange question i know but i have some concers over my ds' ability to sit or even stand still. he is only 17 months so appreciate that it is in a toddler's job description to be hyperactive and touching everything. however my ds is litterally never still unless asleep.

he has to be touching everything and protests loudly when he is restricted or moved away from something (normal i think???). he struggles to actually concentrate on anything for more than a minute (again, probably normal). he has always been highly strung and very prone to crying/ tantrums.

even as a new born he couldn't bear to be still. he was always squirmy and screamed a lot! i had to walk around with him all the time and the moment i sat with him he secreamed for me to stand up and get moving. he still rarely sits on my lap. he always hated being strapped into anything like buggy/ carseat and constantly needs to be 'free' to explore everyting, touching, tasting, fiddling.

i am just a bit concerned as my friend's little boy has just been diagnosed with adhd and whilst i realise it's way too early to worry, i do recognise a lot of the traits in my ds already. does it all sound normal??

It's funny as I was just thinking the exact same thing tonight - DS1 (2.6) was sat on my lap watching 64 Zoo Lane before bedtime and he literally fidgeted all the way through it!! Then I took him to bed, and whilst I was reading him a story, again he was just moving from one position to another!

He literally is like this all the time and always has been - he would never stay in his highchair for long and going out for meals with him was a nightmare (could only go places where we knew the service was quick!) - now he won't go in a highchair at all, we don't bother going out for meals at all as we would spend the entire meal chasing him round the restaurant - not my idea of fun!

Hi meandjoe, I think we've met on this board before

There are lots of similarities with your ds and mine (a couple of months older than yours). Mine is a livewire too. Nothing to worry about, just make sure he has plenty of opportunities to burn off his limitless energy! Does he go to nursery yet?

Ds1 (2.8) doesn't do still.

i gave up on meals out but i do sometimes look throught the windows of restauraunts as i pass and see a baby sat happily in a high chair and just hink 'hmmmmm, we could never do that!' not that i can afford to at the minute but it would be nice to think it was an option! lol.

as long as other people's toddlers are like this then i don't feel so alone!

hi fattipuffs yep i remember speaking to you on another thread about 'active' babies too! he doesn't go to nursery, i have a feeling it would probably do him good though (but i would miss him terribly). i know he'd be so upset when i left but i also know that he would get used to it and it would probably be really fun thing for him eventually. i think i will look into it again. thank you xxxx

Meandjoe - lol, we have also done the staring witsfully at other babies sat in their highchair quite happily

If you could afford it, nursery would be a good option I think. DS1 started nursery 4 days a week at 7 months when I went back to work and loved it - 2 years later, he still really enjoys it as he burns off the energy, they keep him occupied and he gets to play with his friends. I am currently on maternity leave but DS1 is still going to nursery as it definitely does him good.

Zombie thread.

Amused me when this popped up on my ‘threads I’m on’. My toddler who wouldn't sit still (mentioned on the thread) is now a 15 year old who rarely moves!
