DD had her 9mth assessment on monday and HV told me she should be crawling by now and wants to see her again at 12mths to check her progress.

On one hand i'm really annoyed that health professionals treat all babies as statistics, after all babies are unique and do things at different ages.
But on the other hand i'm worried that dd's development is delayed.
She can sit unaided and rolls onto her tummy, she attemps to crawl but she just shuffles a bit then gives up.

The HV also suggested that I stop bfing as dd still wakes for one feed in the night HV says she should be sleeping through by now. DD is my 2nd child and DS didn't sleep through until we moved him into a bed at 2yrs old.

I just feel a bit confused and worried and would like to know what your 9mth olds are/were like.

Thanks

I only ever saw the HV once(legal requirement) with my DDs, when DD1 was born at 35 weeks they made me feel so inadequate and the pressure that babies should be doing everything by the book drove me insane! So I have gone with my instincts and luckily have a good GP who has time to talk to me if I'm worried. Don't worry Dragonfly74 all babies are different, mine crawled between 9 and 11 months.

I have found that my HV seems to be there to offer emotional support and "obvious" advice (that I could find on the internet).

My HV covers 2 post code areas and has said (to me) that what she does for 1 area is very different to the other because of "needs". I get the impression that we are easy (in our postcode) so she focuses her time on the other one (which is fine by me).

My DS didn't crawl till the week before he was one - had been cruising for a couple of months before that though. HV wasn't worried in the least, and at his one year check asked if he fed in the night, but when I said yes, asked if it was a problem for me and when I said no, said that was fine then wasn't it. She was a nice HV, although I only saw her a handful of times.

my DD was seen by a child development physio at 9 months and assessed as having a MILD motor delay...she basically couldn't do anything at that age and would just fall over if you tried to sit her up and her head still lagged when she was pulled up by hands.

Your DD doesn't sound like she has any problems.

My DD crawled at 13 months and started to walk as she turned 2 and has become pretty steady very quickly!

Oh, take no notice! It?s the luck of the draw with health visitors, some are brilliant, but a load of them are just rubbish.

Mine scared the bejeesus out of me ? literally, every story she told me ended with the words: ?and the baby died.? Way to instil confidence in a new mother.

My little one wasn?t crawling at 9 months. However, when he was 10.5 months, he pulled himself up on the sofa, pushed off and started walking.

I always think HV?s have real problems with the concept of averages. You can only have an average if there are others at the top and bottom end of the scale. Maybe nurse training should include a bit more on basic maths....

What everyone else said. In fact, my daughter couldn't roll over until she was about 18 months. She'd been walking for six months by then and never crawled. These HV people are weird.

Re qualifications, my HV told me that they're all qualified nurses who then train as HV's. We also have a nursery nurse at our clinic who is lovely. Little man really likes her, and throws himself at her whenever he sees her.
