DD not talking, do I contact the HV?

I've only just logged on and I was about to start this thread then I saw Evesmama's thread about her dd, I did'nt want to hi-jack so I've started my own.

I have the opposite problem in that dd is nearly 18 months and not saying anything at all. She will say nono if she wants something and dit if she's seen something that interests her but that is it.

Now, do I contact the HV and see what she thinks or am I just being daft?
I saw dd's HV last October and we mentioned speech to her then and she said just make sure you read and go through books with her, point things out etc. We have been doing that and 6 months on we're still the same.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do?

Sorry, definitely agree with RnB, sorry if I'm sounding like 'don't worry' - if you're worried then it does need checking out, whether it's likely that anything is wrong or not, because you're instincts are best and you spend the longest time with her. It doesn't sound like she's abnormal to me, and I hope that helps, but definitely get onto the HV, if nothing else it might reassure you.

Jimjams · 21/03/2005 15:24

agree with rnb there. When I first suggested autism at 17 months everyone told me I mad (and came out with the bloody Einstein quote again- ironic since einstein was porb autistic!). Anyway I was right and at 5, almost 6 he still isn't talking and no-one mentions Einstein now. I wish I'd gone with my gut feeling then.

DS2 barely uttered a word until he started nursery at 2. His vocabulary exploded and within 2 months he was speaking in sentences. By comparison, his older brother was speaking clear words by 1.

Peraonlly, I'd mention it to the HV if you happen to be seeing her but wouldn't make a special appointment.

Jimjams · 21/03/2005 15:25

although I wouldn't trusty HV- they are bad at spotting speech problems- however they can be used to refer you on to SALT. so if you are worried push to be referred.

wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 15:26

soupy, or anyone else, do you happen to know when the next time a HV should see your child at this age is? Last time I saw mine was at about 12 months and have heard nothing since.

kid · 21/03/2005 15:26

Even if your DD does need SALT, they are excellent and you see improvements rapidly.
My DD will being having another assessment done when she goes back to school after Easter to see if she needs to be referred back to the SALT. I think she does and am happy for them to check.

I am expecting for advice on games we can play at home to help with immature sounds (as they call it!)

SoupDragon · 21/03/2005 15:27

Should add that I wasn't overly worried about DS2 because he was communicating with a few signs and pointing etc. I think if there had been oher worry points I would have sought a second opinion.

SoupDragon · 21/03/2005 15:28

WK, I think it's 2 here. Although I never took DS2 for his 2 year check. He's not seen a HV since he was er... omg, before he was 1! I'm such a bad parent

wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 15:29

Lol, my HV is useless so I'd never bother unless she wrote asking. Do they ask you to have a 2 year check or are you supposed to be clamouring for one?

kid · 21/03/2005 15:32

HV usually does a developmental check at 2 1/2 years old (if they have the funding).
A dr does the 18 month check.

wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 15:34

Thanks kid - have heard nothing from the doc, except the usual monthly demands for me to take dd in for MMR, even though I've said she won't be having it until April.

SoupDragon · 21/03/2005 15:39

I got sent a letter inviting me to make an appointment for his 2 year check. I never got round to it.

coppertop · 21/03/2005 15:40

Our HV phoned just after ds2's 2nd birthday to arrange a time for his 2yr development check.

HV: I'm calling to arrange a development check for .

Me: Er...he's being assessed next week at the Child Development Unit.

HV: Why? Is there a problem?

Me (resisting the urge to be sarcastic): Yes. The Paediatrician wrote to you about him last November. You've been invited to the case conference next week.

HV: Have I?

Arrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!

With ds2 we knew there was a problem because he didn't seem to understand a word we said and also had to be taught how to point. At 2yrs he had about 15-20 words but rarely used them.

Newbarnsleygirl · 21/03/2005 15:44

I've just rang my HV and they're going to send their nursery nurse round next week and give me some help and tips and see if it's a problem.

WK, The HV said they've scrapped the 18 month check and the next assessment is 2yrs.

I know it does sound daft but I did wonder about autism and I mentioned it to DH as he works with children with autism and he said that dd was doing things that some of those children couldn't and they're 9yrs+. I'm still not convinced though.

Hopefully the nursery nurse should give you some advice NBG, thanks I'll look forward to the 2-yr letter, not!!!

ct - your HV always sounds like she should be taken out and shot, need any volunteers?

coppertop · 21/03/2005 17:21

WK - Yes please!

Newbarnsleygirl · 21/03/2005 18:21

I'll give her a bashing too CT!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 19:30

ct - right give me her number and a shovel please

wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 19:33

(by the way NBG - I've finally figured out why your dd won't talk, its because you don't give her enough chocolate or let her eat her grannie's fry-ups!! )

Newbarnsleygirl · 21/03/2005 19:35

Oh god lord WK your right!

I told you that you were the wise one

  • Now if you'd only give her a McD's happy meal she'd spout sentences immediately
Newbarnsleygirl · 21/03/2005 19:41

Right the plan is as follows;

Fry up for breakfast, a good way to start the day.

Mc D's for lunch and none of this fruit bag instead of fries malarky.

I'm stuck for teatime though, I'm thinking something with chips.

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 21/03/2005 19:43

NBG - got to be kebabs!! Smothered in curry sauce, with chips, cover all food groups!!!

Newbarnsleygirl · 21/03/2005 19:50

Oh yeah!

Once again you have the answers!
