If your child walked early are they very 'physical' now?

Like sporty?
Was talking to friends at school about DS2 cruising and how the other two were nowhere near this stage at this age and a couple of them had 9-month walkers. These children are also very physical now, always win on sports day, good dancers etc
Coincidence?

Interesting... DS1 walked at 9.5 months, and yes, is pretty sporty - hates football but is a wizard on a surfboard and fast runner etc.

DS2 walked later (13 months) and is much happier curled up on the sofa flicking through a magazine than he is doing anything that might make him out of breath, moans for the entire walk to school, etc.

So it works for us. How old is your DS2?

LilRedWG · 28/11/2008 09:49

I think co-incidence.

My wonderful neice (13) was a late walker. She now swims in galas for a club and is also in an athletics club.

DS walked early and is very good physically, he has amazing balance, is a great swimmer etc. DD was 18 months and she is still clumsy, and when we go to the park she'll go on the slide once or twice then sit on a bench and look at a book, lol.

Anna8888 · 28/11/2008 09:52

My DD walked at 10.5 months (but had been trying to stand since 2 months, and was always bouncing on my knees, never sitting quietly) and at 4 she is noticeably strong - although she is among the youngest in her class as she is November born (and the intake is a calendar year here) she is among the two strongest girls, who run fast/climb well, in her class.

She has very strong, muscular legs - none of those little girl twig thighs. I'm sure she'll be a fab ski-er like her father .

Helsbels4 · 28/11/2008 09:57

My DS walked at 10 months and is very sporty/ always loved walking instead of being in his pushchair. DD walked a week before her first birthday and is a lazy little monkey! I just put it down to their different personalities though.

ds walked at 9 months and is very sporty

rode his sister's bike with stabilisers at about 14 months and could ride without by 2,
fast runner etc

dd walked at 1 and has been later to develop phsyical skills

ChubbyDick · 28/11/2008 10:02

DS1 walked early and is very physical/sporty now. But he's 4 and and aren't they all pretty much phyical at that age?

castille · 28/11/2008 10:14

DD1 walked at 9.5 months and now, age 11, is quite sporty, esp swimming, and has good hand-eye coordination.

DD2 walked later, at 12 months, and is hopeless at tennis but great rhythm and is a very good dancer.

jeminthecity · 28/11/2008 10:19

Based on just 2 children I would say yes coincidence. Other factors come into play too, it would be a bit too simplistic to say there is a direct correlation between walking early and sportiness, surely?

DD walked at 11 months. Fairly active, but no more or less so than other kids her age.

VictorianSqualor · 28/11/2008 10:24

Some things are simple jeminthecity.

It would make sense that those who go on to be more physically able start off as more physically able.

Could be, but don't all children develope at different rates, so early walking may not necessarily imply they are more physically able, just that skill developed earlier, if you see what I mean.

bronze · 28/11/2008 10:31

Ds1 was ver early 9mths and its very active now (loves climbing etc) but I do think its coincidence as ds2 was about a year and hes pretty active too.

blueshoes · 28/11/2008 11:39

I amazed my parents by walking at 9 months.

I wouldn't say I was particularly strong or sporty, but I find any sport or dance that requires balance, flexibility and agility easy eg skating, rollerblading, surfing, ballet, latin dance. Rubbish at team sports though!

My dcs walked at 13 months - which is about average I think. They are cheeky little monkeys eg streaking around, somersaults, crazy jumping, back flips (you know where they hold on to your hands and walk up your legs and flip over at the top). Ds is so funny when he does this - he was less than 2 years' old and copied his older sister right off the bat.

blueshoes · 28/11/2008 11:41

I agree with the latest posts that early walking does not necessarily correlate to good physical skills in adulthood. In the same way early reading does not mean a child is a necessarily an avid reader in adulthood.

Scarletibis · 28/11/2008 11:45

According to MIL my DH walked at 7 months . He is not greatly sporty.

karise · 28/11/2008 12:02

I would suggest there is a musical connection- not a physical one! DD walked at 9 months & now at 6 is as clumsy as ever! However, she plays the piano well & sings perfectly in tune.
She does gymnastics & seems to be doing ok at this but nothing outstanding 7 her hand/eye co-ordination for ball games is hopeless!

WotsThatSkippy · 28/11/2008 12:04

Interesting. My son walked at 10 mths and is incredibly physical.

HeadFairy · 28/11/2008 12:10

My ds walked at 10 months too, he's only 14 months now, but he's incredibly physical, literally never sits down except to grab a bit of food (even that's a struggle, I have to run after him) His cm is amazed, she says she's never known a child with that much energy. All this will please dh though, he's desperate for ds to be a professional footballer

lilibet · 28/11/2008 12:17

ds2 walked at 8 months , plays rugby football and runs cross countries.

The other two both walked at 12 months and are moderately sporty

christywhisty · 28/11/2008 12:56

DS walked 10 months. Has very strong legs and is a natural breast stroke swimmer with a very powerful kick, but he is not particularly light or quick on his feet.
He is good at climbing and is fearless.

DD walked at 13 months again has the powerful breastroke kick, again not particularly sporty.

tortoise · 28/11/2008 12:59

DS1 walked at 9 1/2 mths and is very lazy! He is 11 now and would rather sit on his bum than do anything else.

ummadam · 28/11/2008 14:36

I walked at 10m and am about as unphysical as you can get. I have two left feet, no grace, am clumsy and fall over my own feet when I run . I've always done well academically though and my mum reckons my early mobility was just a way of getting to what I wanted to be involved in (ie because I was nosy ).

ummadam · 28/11/2008 14:39

..although karise may have a point - I was very musical at a young age (but then part of that was escapism since I was bullied for not being sporty!)

My DC who walked the earliest is the least physical.
